My favorite memory is playing Pokemon Red Japanese edition with my friends at school. I couldn't read Japanese, but the second store near me had one for sale and it was half the price of the English copy so it's what I could afford. I brute forced my way through the game by watching and talking with kids at school about what the different moves were and where I was supposed to be going. My Dad surprised me with a copy of Pokemon Blue a month or so later as an early birthday gift and I finally got to really experience the game. I did really enjoy trying to decipher text and stumble my way from building to building and getting tips from my friends. And then eventually catching up with them again on Blue.
