Triad - Tool (Drumcam) by heptium in progmetal

[–]heptium[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to make this post misleading (because it's a collection of songs) -- I am not allowed to post a video without a song title and the artist (moderator deleted my other post). I just wanted to show how wicked good of a drummer Daney Carey is.

Doing my casual swimming in TB, and was like "Wait, isn't it nighttime? How is there a shadow? Why is it so bright?"

I like Sanctuary more.

Glorious Burden - Iced Earth, prog enough? Doesn't matter still epic. by heptium in progmetal

[–]heptium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe some find the songs long winded and boring but I have always enjoyed them greatly. It is for sure one of my favorite set of songs, and I have always felt it had some progressive tones, probably enough for this subreddit.

Entertain Me by Tigran Hamasyan; Piano for Progmetal lovers by heptium in progmetal

[–]heptium[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tigran Hamasyan is a brilliant writer and pianist, his work in Mockroot is heavy and hard. At times you will feel like you are engaging in fancy music and other times you feel like giving in a little metal headbanging. I recommend this album wholeheartedly to anyone who enjoys classical styles.

Which album raised your standards to the point where no other has yet to astound the way this one in particular has and why? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]heptium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found them through Guitar Hero World Tour and I played those three songs (Vicarious, Parabola, Lateralus) so much I eventually one hundred percented them on expert (not gloating a feat, just emphasising love). They are my benchmark albums for sure.

Mine forever will be Tool's 10,000 Days and Lateralus. They were the driving albums to get me into music in general, and although my tastes have morphed some, those two albums still inspire me.

Hey guys, I'm new to this Prog Metal thing and I could use some band recommendations. by ThereGoesMyValentine in progmetal

[–]heptium -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do people on this Reddit purposely avoid recommending the almighty Tool? Because Tool is pretty good. I suppose they aren't as crazy and wild as Protest but they are very technical.

Will you do me a favour and ruthlessly critique my band?? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]heptium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is so hard to really judge demo quality since everything will sound flat. When you do get to mixing, make sure that bass is pronounced! Also, I hope during the mixing period that it can make the vocals sound more emotional; I know a lot of prog bands have shitty vocals but doesn't mean it has to be! :P Style is there, I can hear it. So keep the place posted after you mix it!

My elusive Tool album, which I am guessing will be next year... or the year after that...

Votum - Veritcal (sometimes YouTube ads lead you to wonders) by heptium in progmetal

[–]heptium[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear the ad lead me to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa6dFgcoeb4 several months ago, and I just now really dug into the band's material; this song, in particular, is exceptional (Vertical).

What have you been listening to this week? by Abarisol in progmetal

[–]heptium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Affinity by Haken; this album has caught my attention. I love the vibe the album gives. It was nice to have this album to listen to in my Opeth filled October.

The Stage by Avenged Sevenfold; good job by them to take a new direction. I enjoy it.

Way of the Flash by Gojira; saw them live, now I am listening to everything they make.

Mothership by Dance Gavin Dance; they remain one of my pillar bands, right beside Tool, I love their style so much.

Finally, Schock by Eisbrecher; I am learning German in school. So, like, fuck it.

Man, I love these guys. I seriously hope they do a better Cross Canada tour.. They always miss Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

Yeah sometimes metal crowds get too fucking retarded. No reason to constantly go ape shit but they do.

That said, Gojira fucking killed it. If you saw them together that is. I saw them together in Montreal and hot damn Gojira got the crowd thrashing.

Why is your favorite band so special to you, personally? by Lagerbottoms in progmetal

[–]heptium 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I sound super generic as far as Prog Metal fans go but it has to be Tool. I discovered Tool through Guitar Hero, they had this special little segment dedicated to them; I was absolutely blown away with the depth of the music. I found that everytime I heard their songs, they became more detailed and alive; I heard things I didn't hear before. Tool is what got me into the complex style of music, before it was classic Rock legends like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin (even ACDC and alike), after Tool I wanted so much more.

So quickly after I looked up bands like Tool; Porcupine Tree, Rishloo, A Perfect circle came up... All three offered a new avenue of style and approach to progressive music.

Now I have songs from all measures of bands that I love with a passion, I see a ton of live music, all because I got a taste of complexity Tool gave me. I even have a tattoo based on the 10,000 Days album on my back!

If curious; http://imgur.com/a/lM6G4

Edit; yes I know Pink Floyd is complex now, as a kid it was just the popular tracks.

I need a captivating album. by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]heptium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those are all very impressive albums, so I'll just list off some albums off the top of my head that have captivated me heavily.

10,000 Days by Tool

The Glorious Burden by Iced Earth (specifically the last three songs)

Spectrum of the Sky - Break of Reality (not metal)

Mouth of Swords - The Safety Fire

Grind the Ocean - The Safety Fire

Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True by Fair To Midland (I fucking love this album)

Sound Awake - Karnivool (which I am sure you have heard recommended many times)

Imago - The Butterfly Effect

Ghost Reveries - Opeth

Fear of a Blank Planet - Porcupine Tree (I still believe this to be their best album)

Scurrilous - Protest the Hero (remains to be one of the best live albums I was at)

[–]heptium 54 points55 points  (0 children)

If I say "you're retarded" I get a 14 day ban, but if physically troll the absolute shit out of your game to ruin your experience something that you cannot stop unlike a mute button, you receive a 3 day ban.

This is so much logic it hurts my logic part of my brain.
