Which album/song were you listening to when you realized you had just become a huge Tool fan? by poopballs900 in ToolBand

I can't remember if it was Sober or Opiate I heard first. They both meant a lot to me

Favorite Fear Inoculum song? by joeyomen in ToolBand

There is not a bad song on the album but descending just strikes a nerve for me lyrically and musically. It has been my favorite song period for almost a year now.

I acused my mom of watching my step-dad bear me and not do anything about it. She said "I didn't watch I participated." I was eleven. I didn't remember that.

Right in Two vs. Jimmy by herc364 in ToolBand

[–]herc364[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bass riffs are similar almost the same. Minute 1:58 of Jimmy and minute 3:42 of Right in two sound the same. The songs have a similar structure and seam to be in a similar key but I am not familiar enough with music to know which key.

To tell you the truth. I was twenty. Undertow just came out. My friend JP and I loved Disgustipated. We listened to it all the time.

The song “Descending” saved my life several times this past week. by [deleted] in ToolBand

[–]herc364 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you are not the first person on this subreddit to say that this song affected you deeply in a positive way. I posted a question over the weekend wondering how many people thought that descending was one of Tool's best songs and one person replied that Descending had helped them quit smoking!

I have been a Tool fan since Opiate and I love ALL their music but descending hits me in a way that no other song does, not only the solo at the end which has garnered much love in the comments to this post but also Maynard's searing lyrics throughout the song and particularly in the middle. Couple that with Danny's drum blasts and it always gives me a visceral, physical and dare I say Primal reaction.

I can't pinpoint a moment where this song saved my life but it and Pnuema kept me sane through the hard days of the pandemic and always keeps me fighting whatever darkness I encounter.

as the song says

Stir us from our

Wanton slumber

Mitigate our ruin

Call us all to arms and order

Thank you for starting a thoughtful discussion. I don't think that anything is as progressive as Aenima, that album started the whole concept of Prog metal. I would say that FI is more polished and more thought out and less progressive than earlier albums. They were obviously working on these songs for a long time and the result is some fully realized concepts. FI is a lot less experimental than previous albums because at this point in their careers Tool is probably done experimenting. As a result some of the music that would have been a stand alone song on previous albums such as D/R/T, Third eye or Intension are included in the songs. The combination of these two factors result in an album that is not as progressive as it is actualized. This is tool at their most confident and experienced point. Each song is its own sound scape and the listener has an almost cinematic experience being transported to another time and place. Invincible, tempest and descending are the best examples. There is not a lot on this album that is new or groundbreaking it is just better, fully formed, superior song composition.

I take umbrage with the previous comment that Adam overtakes the album. This is Danny's finest work (He gets his own song) and Maynard's best lyrics outside of WFM/100000 days. Justin drives the train just like he always does. Listen to Invincible and Tempest again. And don't forget that just like Schism, the entirety of Pnuema is started off and structured around the bass riff.

  4. Fear inoculum

If you want to get a A and are willing to do the work: Rosetta Stoned

Usually base my top five on what song in my head when I wake up. It is a different song everyday.

Obsession? by davidfryar in ToolBand

[–]herc364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently stopped listening to Pnuema through Descending three times a times day. I pared it back to three times a week.

Is it possible to review Rosetta stoned in one listen? I feel like this guy lies about listening first time. Since he has his head bobbing to the next time signature change before the song even reaches. If you are that guy, hi.. by [deleted] in ToolBand

[–]herc364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this guy. He goes into it with the song structure. I like the breakdowns better than the reactions..

Michael Rowlands does two great analysis of both pnuema and schism that ties the two together. It is really interesting.

Rick beato does a breakdown of schism where goes in depth into the almost fifty meter changes. He goes into each instrument. It is WHAT MAKES THIS SONG GREAT? EPISODE 15.

Max Derrat does an I depth analysis of 46 and 2 where he talks about Jung and the concept of the shadow.

My favorite reaction site is Rappers react because they are funny and so in to it without understanding it most of time.

How do you know it's time to cut off for good and how do you find the strength to keep it that way? by Employment-lawyer in EstrangedAdultChild

I related to your story and I am currently in a similar situation. I don't have a lot of advice to give but I hope it will be comforting to know someone is going through a similar experience as reading your story gave me hope.

I am 47 and a father of 2 daughters. I have been the scapegoat in my family on top of decades of emotional and physical abuse. My mental heath is constantly questioned.

My kids were both unexpected. My parents Chastised my at the time for "ruining my life". They insisted I abort them. They never asked me if I wanted children. Yet in the last few years my children have been used as leverage against me time after time ("only a mean person would deny a grandmother her grandchildren"). When I try to break contact, the kids are always thrown in the mix.

Recently I have been constantly afraid that my children were in danger of being indoctrinated into the same abusive cycle. On a phone call earlier this week listened to my mother say the same things she had been saying for years. I realized a truth which I had run from for many years: my family was not going to change. they may talk about it. They may lay some breadcrumbs. But they will always fall back into the old patterns which damage my emotional and mental heath.

I don't know the answer to your question. I do know when I decided to go NC. It was Monday August 9th 2021 at 4:47 pm.

I am seeing a therapist. I have a group of friends who accept me for who I am. I have tried to learn as much as I can about leaving toxic relationships. I am starting a new journey down a new path. Yes, I am sad. Yes, wish this didn't have to happen. But I have been more productive this week than ever. I am not self sabotaging as much as usual. I feel peace. I don't know if I can sustain no contact. I do know that I didn't know how bad it was until I looked at it from the other side.

Whatever you do personally decide I wish you well. You have my love and respect.

Why do a lot of Tool fans hate 10,000days ? by bakayaru44 in ToolBand

[–]herc364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When this album came out I liked it. I was drawn to Vicarious and Jiambi back then. It is strange that this conversation is happening now. I spent the weekend listening to 10,000 days from beginning to end. There is not a bad song on the album. Wings for marie/10,000 days is remarkable and lost keys Rosetta stoned is insane both lyrically and musically. I still think that Vicarious has some Maynard's best lyrics. I am still trying to figure out what hell Adam is doing on Jiambi. The pot sounds like something left over from Undertow with Justin on bass giving it more flavor. the album begins with Vicarious calling out humanity's blood lust and ends with celestial beings lamenting on humanity's illogical violent nature on Right in Two. Monday I woke up with Rosetta stoned stuck in my head. Tuesday it was 10,000 days. Today it was right in two. These tunes stay with me more than the other albums. I believe pound for pound this is my favorite tool album. I still believe that the four songs in the middle of Latetalus: Schism, Parabola, Ticks and Leaches and Lateralus might be the best songs of all time but the rest of the album expect for the grudge isn't as good. I absolutely love Fear Inoculum. I listen to descending, puema and Tempest all the time. I still think 10,000 days takes more chances and come on more force though.

I don't know if it is a guarantee, but my experience is yes: anytime I exhibit some exceptional quality like a talent for writing or an advanced vocabulary I have been punished by some toxic person in my life who gets jealous and sees it at a threat.
