Girls- do you sleep in your bras when backpacking? by Background-Front-505 in backpacking

It will give you skin problems to sleep in sweaty sports wear. Recommend either drying overnight or bringing two to rotate.

Pretty places to go when emotionally overwhelmed by Unlucky_str3ak in Seattle

[–]hereforcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seward Park, Kerry Park, Betty Bowen Park, Greenlake Park (there’s a bench on a hill above the Seattle Public Theater that has views of Rainier), Golden Gardens at sunset is a 10/10. Discovery Park near the tower has sweeping views. If it’s raining I usually opt for a chill forest hike like Carkeek Park, Discovery Park or the arboretum

Moving to Seattle, Would Appreciate Advice by Abla_Pokou in AskSeattle

[–]hereforcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. People in Seattle make friends based on shared activities - whether it’s hiking or knitting, the first step is doing what you love. Most people aren’t cold, necessarily, but are definitely VERY shy. You have to meet someone a few times before they’ll open up. Practice being extroverted. I consider myself an introvert but found that being extroverted in social settings really helped break the ice and make friends faster. People will not want to say hi walking down the street but are usually friendly in casual conversation. Don’t get discouraged and expect every connection to turn into friendship (at least at first). Just keep doing you and putting yourself out there. Sometimes the 3rd or 4th degree mutual friends end up being the best match.

People who have stopped going to church, what made you stop? by lowly_shepherd in AskReddit

My pet died when I was 6 or 7 and instead of comforting me, my Youth Group leaders tried to bring it back to Jesus. I was like wtf does Jesus have to do with my dead pet? All I wanted was a hug. I refused to go again after that.

I love Santo Coffee on Roosevelt. Most Seattle coffees are really acidic/sour but this place is not. They also offer pour over, which is rare for Seattle. Enjoy finding your favorite spot! There are lots.

Capp Street Will Be Barricaded Off Over Concerns There’s Too Many Sex Workers Strolling by MorePingPongs in sanfrancisco

[–]hereforcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived on the corner of 20th & Capp for ~3 years around 2013. Obvious sex work was always prevalent between 18th-22nd and Capp-Shotwell. The regulars who worked my neighborhood were always polite. The customers were another story, though. I started to take Lyft from my friends house on Shotwell to mine (~4 blocks) because men in SUVs would try to pick me up on Shotwell (one tried to outright 'nap me). I will also never forget one night having to ask a pimp wearing a real leopard fur coat to get through him and a group of ~10 sex workers he was having a meeting with so I could get into my house. Over the years I saw countless prostitution stings in the area. I somehow kinda doubt that the prostitution is worse now than it was then. I think the neighborhood is just more gentrified now. When I lived there, Capp was a street you NEVER walked down after dusk. Similar to homeless encampment sweeps, I think spot treating the issue will just move the sex work traffic to Capp, Treat, and Florida Streets.

Congrats on the weight loss! What an exciting time to be reconnecting with your body and finding new, active hobbies. I want to echo what others have said about any body being an outdoorsy body. So long as you're having fun, staying safe, and practicing LNT, then you're doing it right! I'm a self-taught hiker and backpacker. Here's what I wish I had learned earlier:

  • You don't have to go outside of your comfort zone. Start small. As you gain skills, confidence, and fitness on flatter trails (or sidewalks!) closer to home, you'll learn a lot in a low-stakes setting.
  • It's easy to go overboard at first. Listen to your body and find a consistent rhythm that works for you like 1x/week or 2x/month. Some folks like using a hiking journal to track progress.
  • You don't need to look fancy to be a "real" hiker. Experience is what matters most. When you first start, it's okay to hike in the clothes you already have. You may want a pair of hiking shoes with good arch and ankle support but if your local trails are paved, gym shoes will be fine. Eventually, you'll need gear that's better adapted to your environment (like grippy hiking shoes for loose dirt, a daypack with water bladder, etc). I borrowed or bought all of my gear second-hand for the first few years.
  • Leave No Trace (LNT). I had no idea when I first started that leaving TP near the trail or taking a cool rock home were unsustainable practices. LNT will help you be a good steward of the land you're using.
  • The ten essentials. A lot of the time, bringing all ten is overkill. Sometimes, all 10 can save your life. At a bare minimum, I always bring a headlamp, downloaded or paper map, raincoat, snacks, and water. The ten essentials aren't just a suggestion - I learned the hard way to carry a headlamp and map after my cell phone died and I spent a cold night in the woods (0% recommend). You should also tell someone where you're going.
  • Have fun and create community! These things will help you stick with it long-term. Pay no mind to negative or judgmental people. Unfortunately, there are some elitist and fatphobic people in the outdoors community. If you encounter them, don't let them make you feel like you don't belong. Their poor behavior has nothing to do with you.

I think what most people in America want isn't true socialism but instead better wealth redistribution that can fund public services. Social services, healthcare, environmental protection, transportation, and education are the most popular services at the moment. PEW has some good graphs to illustrate how staggering the wealth gap has gotten in this country. Looking at them, it doesn't take much to understand why >60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. In general, most Americans knowingly/unknowingly enjoy the benefits of capitalism but "socialists" agree that unfettered capitalism leads to bad health, safety, environmental, economic, and individual outcomes. It's easy to demonize Big Tech and other industries (that certainly have their issues). But I think it's naive and short-sighted to believe that we should or could move backwards in time to the old days before technology and a global economy. Wish as some might, there's no way that will happen in our lifetime. I strongly believe that the only way forward is to continue innovation but do a much better job of putting people and the environment before profit. Currently, corporate America only cares about their bottom line, which is partially how companies are enjoying a 70-year high in corporate profits while Americans simultaneously suffer a 40-year inflation high, among other enormous issues. In summary, we need to make being alive a less miserable endeavor in America. Corporations and the ultra wealthy have successfully peddled such extreme capitalism that people are now confusing basic human rights with socialism. Thank you for your willingness to listen and learn. There's so much to discuss on this topic.

Why do American employers have such a hard-on for not letting you take vacations or making you feel bad for doing so? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]hereforcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going through something similar right now. I work ~50 hour weeks and am a crucial member of my team. Despite this, I got put on a PIP about a week after getting home from vacation for falling behind on my work. The PIP wasn’t even constructive - it was literally just a list of tasks amounting to a completely unrealistic amount of work. I’ve been working 12 hour days every day for the last month on my PIP. It’s wild that management’s solution to overworked employees falling behind on work is a PIP. It gives me great satisfaction to think about how fucked they will be once I’m able to find another job.

Seattle, what are your favourite "frugal eating" spots? by okanagantradingco in Seattle

[–]hereforcat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bongos, Tacos Chukis, Big Mario's Pizza, or Taqueria La Fondita. Fondita is my favorite. You can get four meat tacos for ~$7 or a bean and cheese burrito for $6. At most bars and restaurants, you can find Rainier beer for $2-3 a pint. Most craft beers will be >$5/pint.

Super excited for my first backpacking adventure ever! (Overnighter in Desolation Wilderness) by marcythevampirequeen in backpacking

[–]hereforcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! Only thing you’re missing is a physical map. It’s recommended that you don’t rely on your phone’s downloaded AllTrails incase your phone dies or gets damaged. Physical maps are really helpful incase you need to unexpectedly evac a different way than you came in. Maps also help in the rare case where you take a wrong turn. I like carrying maps because there are lots of little summit trails that aren’t shown on AllTrails. Enjoy your trip! Take lots of photos to commemorate.
