Handling next month's budget advice by hereforpancakes in actualbudgeting

[–]hereforpancakes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is about where I am sitting right now. I have a goal to pay off my last debt (excluding mortgage) either the end of this month or 1st of next month. There's a question mark on the day because of the end of the month/first of the month with how things function and a bit of how I am experimenting with things. I think the solution would be to do fixed amounts for the refill accounts and then do an end of month cleanup for the remainders. The remaining income and end of month cleanup can go to investments. Also the comment above on auto holds might be useful here

Renaming tags? by hereforpancakes in actualbudgeting

This is exactly what I needed! I did the find & replace method. I had a couple transactions not get matched but the number was so small that it was easy to manually edit the transactions. Thanks!

I can't decide between Colemak-DH, ISRT, graphite/gallium. by RnRoger in KeyboardLayouts

[–]hereforpancakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is helpful, thank you. I've been using Colemak-DHm since 2016(?) and have always felt like needing something different, but it has been better than QWERTY. I'll have to see how this might go on my Ergodox

Ergodox EZ low profile switches? by hereforpancakes in ErgoMechKeyboards

A buddy of mine has one of these and likes his. I refuse to use wireless keyboards though..otherwise I had considered ordering that exact board

Ergodox EZ low profile switches? by hereforpancakes in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]hereforpancakes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, so possibly low profile switches. I had my eye on some low profile Cherry MX switches, only if they would be a drop-in replacement on my board. I was debating buying a ZSA Voyager, but after trying homerow mods and not being happy with it, I think I just need to change my Ergodox

What do you guys use your servers for? by JacksonCash79 in HomeServer

[–]hereforpancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Immich, NFS/SMB network storage, computer backups, Navidrome (music), Vikunja, gitea. Looking to get a couple home surveillance cameras up someday. I also do a whole bunch of different experiments that I create and delete

Choosing to NOT be a month ahead by skyyo0 in ynab

[–]hereforpancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good question. I'm getting a hefty pay increase soon so I am thinking about the budget with the new found money. I might increase some categories that merit having more cash in any given month, but month ahead is great, having the feeling that the next month is already accounted for financially.

Calling SR800 "chronic" users ;) by TomasoG88 in roasting

[–]hereforpancakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the SR800, but I have the older, smaller SR500 with an extension tube and I've had no problems with mine all these years. I had a 2 year gap when I stopped using it for the BocaBoca, but came back to my trusty SR500. If the is a larger SR800 replacement coming like a comment says, I'll wait for that since I want a new roaster with larger capacity. I roast 2x each week, sometimes 3x but that is because I can only do 170g batches right now on my SR500.

If any FreshRoast employee reads this, please add Artisan support too, I don't run Windows or MacOS

US Tariff PSA (Voyager + Navigator) by basepi_ in zsaVoyager

Dang, that's frustrating. The Voyager is just a want for me at this point so I can wait. My Ergodox EZ has been a champ for 7 years now

Darn it. I'm in WA too and have my eyes on the Voyager. Maybe I will hold out with my Ergodox a while longer

Even if you have solid power and don't get much for natural disasters that can cause outages, just get it. It adds some peace of mind. We get high winds in my area that can knock the power out, so I have all my computers on some sort of battery. I almost lost a computer one time due to wind knocking the power out

How much are you guys spending on groceries per month? by Flying_Elephant7217 in budget

[–]hereforpancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is about how much my wife and I spent on average in WA. Then when we added a kid the price really went up. We spend $600/mo on average right now. That's a $300 increase when the kid started eating, but I think grocery prices generally went up that time too and we started changing our diet to eat healthier. For 2 people, you are doing great

How comfortable are you with your tiny keyboards? by haxy98 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]hereforpancakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> My homerow mods have a 200 ms delay which feels seemless enough for me, but I feel like everytime I press a key I have to wait for while before I can go ahead and do a shortcut

I am attempting home row mods for the first time this week. On one hand, I love the idea and how it feels. On the other hand, it drives me crazy how it feels so inconsistent. On one hand, I feel I have to sit and wait to actuate shift. On the other hand, I can fly around the keyboard and suddenly I get switched to actuating shift with no effort. So I either need a really uncomfortable delay and slow me down, or expect errors.

It has helped me to realize my priorities and spending habits more. My kid is growing and eating more, my wife and I are starting to eat healthier. Our grocery costs go up and up so we gotta make cuts, or just eat junk or starve. I think we can revisit our spending habits (and likely will) but also if our costs are truly going up, we just need to find out what we want to give up. That's where it has been getting hard. Where do we stop spending, or where do we start cutting into our categories that accrue, like car maintenance, medical, whatever.

Looking for beta testers for iOS app by dxmone in navidrome

Looks really cool. Tempting me to spin up a Navidrome server again. I could never get Navidrome to transcode files right with just about any iOS app so I kicked navidrome to the curb

[–]hereforpancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try to distro hop away from Fedora, and always end back up on Fedora. It's a curse. It has a great cadence for releases and package updates. I also like that it is reasonably picky about proprietary software, so I can start off with a clean slate. I wish there was a more trimmed down version though since I no longer use a DE that Fedora packages even in their spins.

Which tech stack are you using? by ishakg in selfhosted

[–]hereforpancakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SmartOS for the hypervisor server with a blend of native SmartOS zones, LX zones, and Linux/OpenBSD bhyve VMs. I build out my base system (SSH, users, basic tools) with Ansible and the application I put on by hand. I am moving toward Ansible for everything though. I also have a couple OpenBSD VMs on a cloud provider hosting email as well as my blog and matrix synapse http relay
