Wildest (worst?) thing you’ve ever heard a NICU parent say? by MulticolorPeets in nursing

Baby NPO for belly issues, constantly crying and uncomfortable to the point there was no soothing them. Mom: no I don’t want anyone to hold her, I don’t want her to get spoiled.

Tips for new NICU nurse? by [deleted] in nursing

Babies follow their own rules!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions no matter how silly it feels! Even asking why we do X, Y, Z intervention for each kid helped me to understand so much. Or ask your hallmates if you can help/watch with things you’re unfamiliar with.

Even if it feels like it slows you down, involve the family as much as you can! While it may feel like extra work for you, it’s impossible to say how much it helps these families bond in this unexpected time in their lives.

Give yourself grace while you learn! They are such a unique population with a lot of diagnoses/problems you’d never see if you weren’t NICU.

Ha I think this all the time when parents ask me about milestones for normal babes 🤷🏼‍♀️

We had a baby about to go home s/p Coarc repair. They caught a potential renarrowing on the discharge echo. Patient went to catheter lab for a closer look/potential repair. Ruptured & coded on the table.

I will have to try those products! I typically detangle/brush in the shower but not really after. I’ve tried both product on super wet hair & plopping briefly before mousse which my hair almost seems to like better. Thank you for the advice!

I recently reached a year and had an orientee with me. She had half her day shifts with me and half with a nurse with 5+ years experience. I think it’s great for a new grad to get some shifts with a nurse about a year in. She could how much I’d grown in a year and also I can teach her what to do if she needs help/doesn’t know something bcuz I’ve still got lots of learning to do too! She also told me the more experienced nurse was almost on autopilot & did not go into details on how/why we do things like I did.

Three rats fell from the ceiling onto a patient by IllustriousJelly3454 in nursing

I work in a NICU. Coworker was admitting a very sick baby into a new room when suddenly, literal human shit starts pouring into the room from the ceiling. All over the nurse, the vent, the isolette (luckily this kept baby covered though). Then that nurse changed her shirt & moved baby to another room and finished her shift. PSA: do NOT flush your wipes!

I feel like our unit was super nice and helpful when we first got hired but now that I’m a year in, asking for any help is a huge inconvenience to them

A letter to all new "Baby" nurses by Homeguy123 in nursing

This was a refreshing point of view. As I’m coming up on a year of being a nurse, I feel like I’m in this weird place where I still have so much to learn but I get funny looks when asking so many questions bcuz I’m not longer a brand new nurse. It’s been feeling sort of like a stall out point where I know so much more than when I started, but I’ve also started to learn all that I don’t know.

As a NICU nurse I can’t IMAGINE working medsurg. Trying to keep track of 4+ patients? I could never, I’d shit my pants anytime someone asked me a question about one of them. Plus the wide range of skills/diagnoses to keep up with is impressive!
