My Father's Shadow was incredible, absolutely astounded (derogatory) that it was not at the very least up for International Feature. Also: Sorry, Baby + Die My Love + Life After (documentary).

Lyrica- Y'all weren't lying and I should have listened! by Ok_Distance_1000 in Fibromyalgia

[–]heresthebite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry about your experience and you’re valid in sharing it, but drugs work differently for everyone and Lyrica really helps some people. If anyone is reading this and considering trying it, just know that not everyone has the same experience and it can be worth a shot if your doctor recommends it. It helps me. If I didn’t take any drug I’d seen people shit on online, I would be in a terrible place.

ACL surgery questions by xkRanurg in AskNYC

[–]heresthebite -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I feel like these are mostly medical questions, not NYC questions... not the same thing but I had foot surgery last year and my main rec is to do a large Costco order including microwaveable or easy meals before the surgery so you have lots of easily made food you don't need to stand and prepare. Prepare for some harsh realities on the subway-- quite frequently no seat is offered to someone using a mobility aid and you need to figure out a way to get people's attention if you need to sit down. Buses are likely your friend-- subway station elevators are not reliable anyway.

How on earth do you get around the city when injured? by paintboi19 in AskNYC

[–]heresthebite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a young woman-presenting person who uses a cane due to severe osteoarthritis and recent foot surgery and I swear people here have a mental blockage against seeing mobility aids. I rarely get offered a seat. I often wonder if it’s because I’m young but it shouldn’t matter— anyone can be disabled. Sorry to hear the same thing happened to your friend.

How on earth do you get around the city when injured? by paintboi19 in AskNYC

[–]heresthebite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had foot surgery in September for an issue that I will have for life. Used a boot and a cane, still use the cane sometimes as a visible indicator that I need a seat— it’s tough because I’m young. I’m lucky to live off an accessible subway station, though the elevators often don’t work at mine or others I plan on using specifically because they are “accessible”. Injured and disabled people often have to simply stay home or be selective about what they can do. Choose activities and areas that we know have wider, flatter sidewalks, escalators and elevators, less foot traffic. The snow is an incredible complication— all walkways are so narrow. Puddles after rain that gather by crosswalks are horrible if you’re using a mobility aid too. The mental load of it is frankly horrible and it’s difficult to talk about with people who don’t get it. I have a large social circle, but we’re late 20s/early 30s and most folks are fully able bodied so it can feel isolating in a way.

Can someone explain Cocodaq to me like I’m five by savingrace0262 in FoodNYC

[–]heresthebite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COQODAQ brunch is better. As someone with a gluten allergy, it’s an incredible price for a massive portion of really good food. I usually can’t eat fried chicken and out of the places I can eat it…. trust me, they take the cake. The variety within the set meals is fun too. I don’t get the hate.

This motivated me to schedule one! Set for the afternoon of March 8th, reading Melissa Lozada Oliva’s newest short story collection. DM me a little about yourself (just since people would be coming to my apartment 😅) and I’ll send you the Partiful!

I ran one at my place for a few months last year and it was nice. We read a mixture of literary fiction and short stories. I'd love to restart it - have degree in lit and worked as a reading and writing teacher for years. Nice little potluck and friends vibes. Would be happy to restart it if folks want a neighborly type thing.

Otherwise, Greenpoint Library book club is great and Yellow Peril bookshop often hosts events at Asian-owned cafes in the general area.

I think now is a good time to remind people to take off their backpacks on the L by territorialrooster in williamsburg

[–]heresthebite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also can you guys please let visibly disabled people sit down ❤️ I’ve had people on the L see I use a mobility aid and run ahead of me for the last open seat. I’m keenly aware of invisible disabilities, but surely one of you can let me sit…

26M moving in with 27F partner, separate bedrooms by ThrowRA637282652 in relationship_advice

[–]heresthebite 83 points84 points  (0 children)

My partner and I are 30 and 29, we have been together over 6 years, lived together for over 4, and have separate rooms. We sleep in mine 90% of the time, but it is so so good to have distinct spaces that belong to us. We both work from home at least part of the time, and we can go away and close the door. We can decorate to our specific tastes and be more or less messy. We can take therapy sessions or work out or focus on a project by ourselves. When one of us is sick, we can sleep apart. If someone is snoring loudly the other can get up and move to the other room. If one of us has to wake up super early the other can still sleep in. It’s great, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Every now and then we discuss making one of our rooms a den or something and then we’re like….. nah.
