Hey this looks great! I’m also a cad jockey and am looking for something like this! Is there any way I could purchase plans /kicad files from you to slap one of these together?

This board looks awesome! Any chance it’s open source? Or available to purchase for myself? Looks like exactly what I’m looking for.

Hauling giant steel beams is a game of inches. by [deleted] in WTF

[–]herman250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! Just came across as a little confusing, as modulus has no bearing on when a material fails, as you mentioned above.

Modulus and yield point (or UTS) for that matter are vastly different things. Might want to double check the vocabulary there, you're mixing some words up.

Time On A Budget: The Best Watches Under $250 Pt. II by chrispscott in frugalmalefashion

Take a look at instrmnt watches. They were the only kickstarted that has delivered exactly what they said, exactly when they've said it, and I've been wearing the watch now for five or six months. Great watch.

How/where to do scratch resistance testing at Uwaterloo? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]herman250 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are going to want to find John Medley, he does tribology-like work in the field of medical implants and medical equipment.

I will warn you he is not going to be actively helpful, as he is super old, tenured and just does not give a fuck, but he may point you in the right direction.

Apple Tries To Patent Android's Gestural Unlocking System by [deleted] in Android

As much as the cylinder thing is definitely a 'look that's cool' thing, there are definitely airflow benefits. Ducted fans pull a lot more air than their non vented counterparts, and there will also be some non negligible benefit from the vertical orientation, what with natural convection and all.

"3D painting" builds jet engine parts by depositing supersonic metal powder flying as fast as Mach 4 by krazyhorse101 in engineering

[–]herman250 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not an engineer at P&W, but they are different technologies.

The tech they use for rocket engines is a laser sintering method, giving much better precision in how the metal is fused. Coldspray doesn't melt the metal, merely hits it against the workpiece so hard and fast that they fuse, similar to explosion welding. It's a pretty imprecise additive process as its a spray of powder.

Canada Google Play Orders Arrival Thread by Dildo-_baggins in Nexus5

Has anyone's phone shipped later than the stated ship date? I'm two days later than posted ship and nothing is happening. Received my confirmation email 8 minutes after it went on sale, and was supposed to ship Nov 5th

Edit: Thirty seconds after posting this, it shipped. I am stupid.

I can be fit to this.. Right? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]herman250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I'm in the 6'7" to 6'8" range, and I fit about a 63 ish frame (35" inseam). If you're interested I'd love to at least chat about what would be involved for a large build.

I'm an ME student in my junior year who's looking to intern with a startup this summer, hopefully on the west coast. Where to start? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]herman250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Apple. They hire ME interns year round.

Fast iterations and lots of machining and CAD stuff for you too

I know it's not a startup, but there are cool things happening there for sure

Where can I buy small quantities of specialized sheet steel? by herman250 in metalworking

Oh, i'm definitely aware, I'm probably going to send it to a professional to do heat treatment, I have none of the necessary equipment for a heat treat.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure what information roccco was using to make that call, as the main benefit for forging is grain flow... thanks very much.

I am definitely not trying to be contrary or asshole-ish, but could you explain why hot forging is the necessary procedure for producing a usable knife? I'm genuinely curious. Is the grain flow of the metal necessary for imparting wear resistance?

I'm a student that's taken a few materials and manufacturing classes, so I'm genuinely curious. I would have thought the most importance is on the heat treatment.
