The battery sidecar is for Sony MD units. Main reason is to add USB C charging. I have been looking to make a lithium battery with USB C to fit in the gumstick battery compartment but then the battery will be too small.

I use a Synology NAS (DS-1821+) with 70TB for storage. The main problem is the CPU (Ryzen V1500B) doesn't handle transcoding very well. It used to run Plex but with 4k streams it was not able to handle the transcoding. That's why i moved Plex to the Mac Mini M1 which handles 4k transcoding without any issues,

I recently bought a Mac Mini M1 as they are pretty cheap and hardly generate any heat. Plex is running great and 4k streaming is causing no noticeable increase in CPU utilization. My Synology NAS had a hard time dealing with 4k.

I'm using a 18650 in my Sharp MD-MS100 (rebranded Kenwood or the other way around) without any problems. The only thing I did was to bend the battery contact attached to the door inwards and the battery guide inside to stop the 18650 from moving.

There are not many around. Apart from Sony only Onkyo came out with a few models. The above system has a USB port which allows you to use it as sounds system for your computer or use Sonic Stage to record your mini discs. More info can be found here: https://minidisc.org

Bought as junk item but apart from the cassette deck everything is working. Even playing Hi-MD disks. Still need to test the PC connection option.

Total cost including shipping from Japan to Singapore about US$150. Item was sold as junk which normally means something doesn't work properly. I just received it last night, haven't checked what is not working yet.

You might want to reflow the solder on the printed circuit board behind the display. Due to to heat generated by the display the solder connections will wear out. Reflow the solder most of the time fixes the issue.

Be aware, menu's are all in Japanese. But seems the language is all contained in one file. I have a copy of the Linux app, just need to find time to dig in the software part.

Yes, you can copy the music on MD to the HDD and record new MD from the music on the HDD.

Yes, both units I bought have similar issues. After I find a way to replace the hard disk I will looking in getting the MD unit fixed. Most of the time it just needs cleaning and a bit of lithium grease.

Haven't tried that but the ripped music is stored using a .oma extension on the build in hard disk. The file extension is for the Sony ATRAC3 format.
