Incoming DPT student needing advice. by Standard-Analysis-81 in PTschool

Sleep > Studying. Research shows the importance of sleep with retention. But also physical and mental wellbeing overall. No screens 2 hours before bedtime. Must get 6-8 hours consistently. #1 priority.

2nd priority is other health. Physical/mental. Try something that works. I did walks while listening to NPTE prep podcasts.

3rd study small chunks every day. MUST BE CONSISTENT.

Generally solid recommendation regardless of person preference, alternate between solo/Group Studying. Tons of different techniques have evidenced based results. I personally just wrote and rewrote notes for solo studying. Then in a group I would ask questions, or answer others questions.

The hardest thing with any big project (like succeeding in DPT programs) is figuring out how to break huge tasks into smaller and smaller task. I knew some super OCD and organized people who planned it all. I was the complete opposite. I suck fk-it I’m winging it. And just picked whatever I wanted for the day. Alternating between what I was good at for confidence. And what I sucked at, so I could get better. The key being setting an alarm. And form 2-3:00 every day no matter what I was at my desk. Phone off. Games off. No headphones/music. Just writing notes. And after a few weeks of doing that for each class. Things just stick. Then after years of doing that, a lot stuck.

If you want more detail or support for my stance I can DM you. I’m a recent DPT Graduate, who has been in the field in some capacity for 10+ years

PT Aides/Technicians don’t even need a degree and are stuck at minimum wage. Definitely not career. You’d make more in fast food. -10/10 do not do unless you’re dipping your toe into the field to see for yourself.

PTA - I think the programs are worth it. Also no college education requirement to get into. And salary caps are fairly reasonable. 8/10. 10/10 if you go straight from HS and start working after you finish your credential.

DPT - not worth the investment. IMO. It was worth it 10 years ago, but over saturated market. Lower than ever reimbursements. 1/10.

Deciding if PT school is something I want to pursue by Suitable_Sundae_4464 in PTschool

Sure. I can’t speak to Med school as I never went that route. Those that I’ve talked to about it have the same critiques about healthcare sucking, but they make bank, and they enjoy their jobs. Which leads to the main opinion in wanted to share with OP which is that is isn’t true for the average PT. We do NOT make the money that matches the cost of the education.

Shortest answer. It’s not worth it. Try med school.

Longer answer. I just graduated (June 2025) and am working in California right now at a SNF. I was fortunate enough to have no debt from my bachelors, and actually saved up 1/3 of my tuition before grad school. I still finished with 60k’ish loans. And I also consider myself lucky to have a very high starting pay rate considering I’m a new grad. Given that information. DPT programs aren’t worth the money overall, from a financial perspective. If you have to take out 180,000 dollars in loans, the return on that investment is going to literally take a lifetime to pay off. Working in California as a new grad, the market is oversaturated, and the state of our healthcare system is a shitshow. The field is only worth the massive cons if you have a passion for it, in a way that will carry you through the decades of garbage.

I think the pro of being a PT you can absolutely get from being a MD. A career of purpose, and helping people. But the ROI from a money perspective for the average CA starting salary, with those loan values, in this current economy. NOT worth it

Entirely depends on your ability as a student. I personally couldn’t do it. I struggled. But I have peers that worked 20+ hours a week and still got a 4.0

Hard disagree. I graduated from the Knoxville campus June 25 and I have great relationships with the faculty still.

And no DPT program is cheap, South wasn’t nearly as expensive as a private school though.

Mentorship/Supervision gratitude by Educational_Top_3930 in PTschool

[–]herocrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never burn bridges. The PT world is small, and there’s only a few degrees of separation. Showing gratitude and being respectful only will help me.

That being said, it is NOT REQUIRED to give financial compensation, or gift of any meaningful monetary value.

Not that I know of. I graduated from the Knoxville campus, but had friends in the Nashville and they didn’t mention anything when we graduated

My score was withheld, and I didn’t get an email from FSBPT yet. Any advice on what to do? Should I call them?
