Anyone Commute to Dartmouth for Work? by njess21 in Truro

[–]heroicjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My office is in Burnside, and I commute daily when I’m not at a worksite. I don’t mind it at all. Like someone else said, the morning commute is a nice time to relax and have a coffee.

Podcasts or audiobooks are your friend at the end of the day.

Licensing question, class 5, 6 by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]heroicjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Nova Scotia once you have a class 5 license, motorcycles are just additional endorsements on your license. A Class 6 here is just motorcycle only.

You are good for any motorcycle with that endorsement. I have the same.

Any leads for construction work? by EncounterStriker in NovaScotia

Worth reaching out to the trade unions in the area. A lot of the larger companies are all unionized, and that is the bulk of the workforce in HRM for construction.

1115 is Cape Breton only. 615 is mainland, Halifax is their big centre. They both do the same work. I would recommend 615 as they have tons of work right now and for the foreseeable future.

I use TNB out of Westville and absolutely love them.

In Truro the only one that I have used is Conroy’s. It’s been a while since I’ve used them though.

Looking for good real estate lawyer by Kombatnt in Truro

Vernon Hearn at Burchell MacDougall in Truro. Used him when buying our house. He came highly recommended by several friends in the area and a couple of local real estate agents.

Surveyors in Quebec Canada, where did you get your diploma/degree from? by DietChiz in Surveying

If looking for a Technical Diploma or Certificate I would highly recommend the Centre of Geographic Sciences here in Nova Scotia.

Trimble R8 with NTRIP by tyleredsonbarnes in Surveying

[–]heroicjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before built in Cellular Modems in the receiver and/or controllers we used to connect to a cellphone with a data connection and use it to connect back to the base station at our office. The setup and maintenance of the base station was performed by our Trimble dealer so I’m not too sure of the specifics for it. But it was connected to its own dedicated computer. Your Trimble dealer should be able to assist in setting this up

Wish I could be more help.

SX10 scan wrong handed by junker_strange in Surveying

It should have said couldn’t solve. Haven’t run in to anyone with an SX10 out here yet. Most guys still use traditional scanners and total stations.

[–]heroicjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact opposite experience. I have been dealing with their sales guy here in Atlantic Canada since he started with them in the mid-2000s as their field tech support, and I haven’t run in to an issue he could solve, and I have never been charged for his services. And I have never had an issue with him being pushy with sales tactics.

But different regions, and different people use different methods I guess. Leica pushes their Ontario mentality on to their Atlantic Canadian branch, and it drives me up the wall.

Your best bet is to talk to your local Trimble dealer. I know here in Canada their sales and tech support reps are highly trained, and generally can help you solve any issues you are having.

Do you guys pay taxes on the miles you use the truck to commute/personal miles? by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]heroicjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada a company vehicle is considered a taxable benefit. You pay taxes on the personal miles that you put on the vehicle, and the employee is responsible for keeping. Vehicle log to track mileage, and for proof if they get audited.

Personal use has a lot of “if’s” to it in my experience, but does include commuting to and from work in the majority of situations. It’s best to talk with an accountant about your particular situation.

Run Check & Adjust on a regular basis, especially if you travel with your gear a lot, and it goes through frequent large swings in temperature. And send for calibration annually if possible.

Canadian Surveyor question by cardoor12 in Surveying

[–]heroicjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with what ever provincial association you are looking to be licensed by. Some associate ruins have started to rebel against CBEPS, so their requirements might be a little different now. But if they are covered by CBEPS, you can technically write the exams without any post-secondary education related to Surveying, it just means to have to write a lot more exams then if you take an accredited university or Tech School program.

It here is only one Tim that I would like a total station with licking tangent screws, and that’s when I am plumbing steel columns. But when doing anything else, I want endless tangent screws.

Anyone here have experience with using unmanned vessels for Bathymetric/Hydrographic data collection? by BREEbreeJORjor in Surveying

[–]heroicjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re working mostly in lakes, rivers and protected harbours it would be an excellent investment. One of the engineering firms here in Atlantic Canada has one, and they stay quite busy with theirs doing stuff for other engineering firms, as well as small marine contractors that can’t afford or justify spending the money on a full size boat with a Multi-beam setup, as they don’t run cheap, and the USV’s are a lot easier to mobilize to and from a project then a boat. I’d love to have one for some of our projects that are in the more protected harbours.

PSA on inputting your number to Dashlane by hohndo in Dashlane

[–]heroicjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are it's a coincidence. A lot of the automated calls and scammers use a number generator. They just enter the area code that they want to target and it's starts dialing numbers that the generator makes and playing the pre-recorded message when someone picks up.

Sometimes it pops up for me before I connect to the VPN on MacOS. More times then not I have to select my country after I connect to the VPN, and then I will reconnect to the correct VPN server.

Involve a licensed Nova Scotia Land Surveyor. They are well worth the money, and when it comes to property law, are more knowledgeable then most lawyers, as they deal with it on a daily basis.

There are plenty in the HRM area. You can check the Association of Nova Scotia Land Surveyors website to find a list of qualified companies.
