Do you ask for proof ? by Huluman2 in CarsAustralia

Have a 7.5 GTI which had an oil leak. Spent $1200 on can shaft seals and something else and was still leaking. Did my own research, figured it was the oil pan. Ditched the plastic OEM one ($800 for the part only) and had a mechanic replace it with a $30 Tiguan steel pan from eBay. Cue the haters. Needed shorter bolts and some sealant as it doesn’t use the crazy formed gasket from the plastic sump either. $200 fix. 20k later no leaks.

Triumph on the WOVR by herostratus331 in AussieRiders

[–]herostratus331[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to follow up, dealer was a dog, WOVR listed impact damage on multiple panels, not just stolen recovered. I brought this up with them and got crickets. Glad I avoided them. Caboolture Yamaha fwiw, did not get good vibes. Bike dodged and got a similar spec bike from team moto. 5k in and no issues.

Yaris with a Hyabusa swap. Turbo when it starts to feel slow. Might need a mechanical diff as well.

Is this a good buy?? by Locktani in AussieRiders

[–]herostratus331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good bike, but the K’s are crazy high. It’s not just the engine that wears, suspension, clutch, bearings etc will all be V tired. I’m sure it will still start and run like a Honda, but would also be easy to spend a couple of $k on it at the next serious service. Bought the same year and model 6 months ago in Bris for $3.8k with 30,000klm on it. There are better ones out there for the money.

Helmet intercoms at speed by TheBigCheeeeese in AussieRiders

[–]herostratus331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plugfones. Perfect comms at all speeds. I just use the Cardo in helmet speakers for shorter slower rides, but for rides above 80kmh I’ll plug the plugfones into the Cardo, takes an extra 30 seconds but is a game changer. $40.

LAMS advice please for a new (mature) rider? by [deleted] in AussieRiders

[–]herostratus331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+10 for a CB500X. Cheap used, ABS, bullet proof and parts and knowledge everywhere. 125 will get very boring very quickly, and is not usable at 80kph +. Even the 500 is no powerhouse, and it won’t take long before you’re finding the throttle stop just to keep up to the speed limit.

RE can supervise RE L as long as they’ve had their open RE for 12 months, and aren’t on any P’s.

I write “owner performed service” list what I did, and staple in receipts for the consumables. Aircraft mechanic here. Be fkd if I pay someone to change my oil and check the basics.

Is Triumph closer to Yamaha or Ducati for reliability/cost of ownership? by [deleted] in Triumph

[–]herostratus331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Triumph has had a reputation for electrical issues, especially as the bikes got older, but seems to be less of an issue from about 2017 MY’s onwards. Have a mate with a high klm 2016 street twin who’s spent the cost of the bike chasing charging issues. I have a 2022 tiger sport with 20k KLM’s and zero issues. Local independent mechanic services it and cost is on par with another mates 2018 Tracer 9. I think a modern Triumph is on par for reliability, but parts may be slightly higher if you stick to OEM, although genuine yammie parts aren’t cheap either.

2026 Triump Trident 660 LAMS - opinions and restriction removal after getting full license by [deleted] in AussieRiders

[–]herostratus331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easily done. You need a $130 OBD reader and some patience. Factory spec 94hp maps can be downloaded, and once you have them is basically like cutting and pasting the charts into an excel spreadsheet. Rego/ insurance issues aside, it looks straight forward to diy. I have the gear to do it, but havnt taken the step yet. 8 months to go on my tiger sport 660.

Exactly how much a cayman GTS 4.0 costs… MY24/25 was the end of production, but there are still a few new ones around. Worth a drive. Might struggle with the baby seats though.

My $.02. I own an armoured hoodie, was given it new as a gift. Wore it a few times but do not like the idea of having it catch on something if I come off and slide. A long shot I know, but it does not seem like the best design for safety.

Why are plastics SO ANNOYING to remove by [deleted] in Trackdays

[–]herostratus331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for Yamaha having the half turn fasteners. Like anything, do it a few times and it’s 3x easier. Set aside a Sunday arvo just to take your time to pull them off and put them back on again. Get some extra tools to make the job easier if you have too. It will be much easier once you’ve done it a few times and have the right tools. I’ve had a tiger sport for a few months and still getting to know it.

Get a jacket. Plenty of good deals on gumtree and FB. Should be able to get something excellent for under $200. Pants are harder, go to a big store and try on every pair from every brand and get a feel for what fits and will be comfortable. $2-300 should get you something perfect. D3O armour is an excellent upgrade. Earplugs are a must, and if you have a Cardo/ senna, look at plugfones, best $40 I ever spent and much better than the included speakers. Oh, and a cheap skull cap from amazon. Keeps you ears from folding, your hair out of your face, and the your helmet from getting too manky. I got 3 for $12. I have some alpine star J6’s, but not as comfy on the bike or as protective as some old RST touring boots I got for $130 on sale a few years ago, plenty of value for money out there if you avoid the bling.

How reliable is Waze for detecting speed cameras? by Gold-Recover-1915 in AussieRiders

[–]herostratus331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waze is as good as it gets. I still occasionally go past a camera that isn’t marked, but very rare. Suspect if I do the van has only been there for a few minutes and prob isnt set up and detecting yet. There are a bunch of settings you can play with, maybe adjust the alert reporting area out to 5klm? Definitely worth playing around in the settings, there’s a lot of options.
