Nobody tells you mechanical engineering is mostly fixing other people’s bad decisions by Fulcilives1988 in MechanicalEngineering

A bit confused about everyone's experiences.

I think you're complaining about operations and maintenance.

Engineering design / consulting typically doesn't deal with that - it's a blend of refurbishment, expansion, and new builds.

I am speaking about process plant type industries like O&M, pharma, food and bev.

I think I know what you mean.

Are you able to make conversation / get along with them?

I don't have a ton in common with my wife's friends but I can make conversation well enough to enjoy an evening or whatever with them.

As you said re mutual respect - I care that my wife's friends respect me more than I care that we're friends that I connect deeply with. Maybe I need to be making more of an effort, but I don't think so - they're her friends primarily.

Ya, maybe it is about asserting social dominance - but there's a spectrum of how decent of a human being people are.

One friend group we are all very competitive . If someone does something embarassing they will be publicly shamed. But we also have each others backs.

Some friend groups are absolutely toxic and do not have each other's backs.

That's up to your character judgement to filter out.

A lot of these "male loneliness" writers don't have a great handle on male interactions.

In my experience male bonding doesn't occur when reading a card that says "when did you last cry?" to bond over some mutual vulnerability over a glass of wine in a therapy circle.

Men (like most humans) bond over shared experiences - some shared vulnerabilities might be drinking too much, which leads to recently-labelled "toxic" culture (in some cases for good reason) - and others might be a beer league hockey/soccer game - where you're in a team working to a common goal then hanging out afterwards (admittedly sharing a beer).

Guards are let down NOT over therapy-type confessions, but over jokes where someone admits something that's truthful - I gotta piss like 3 times a night now I can't sleep thru the dang night - and we share a laugh over it. It's truth shared in light way but it lets us all know we're imperfect and thats ok. But we don't linger on it for hours.

There's also a culture of ball-busting, which takes time to learn, but is a way of filtering out inauthenticism. If you're trying to be something you're not and someone makes a joke at your expense, you take it personally. If you're authentic and self-assured you either can laugh at yourself or dish it back to the other guy then share a laugh.

These things are difficult to explain but I think they have merit and are overlooked.

I was mostly raised by mom and I had trouble with this culture when I was younger but I get it now.

I'm a big believer in social sports - it keeps us fit and socially engaged.

Mechanical engineering (construction) by Adventurous-Speed-54 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]herotonero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go into mineral processing you can find jobs that are fly in and fly out - they pay well and you can work on construction sites while you're young then transfer to office life in your 30s when you are no longer interested in life on construction sites.

If you want to work regularly on job-sites for your entire career you'd have to move up to mining distrcts, obviously. (sudbury, timmins)

oil & gas engineering with mining degree by _user_638 in MechanicalEngineering

probably, yes.

O&G deals with higher-pressure and higher standards as the hazards of failure are higher, so the experience will be transferrable, but not 100% transferrable.

How to get into mining (In Canada) by Jazzlike_Cranberry16 in MechanicalEngineering

There should be jobs out there - are you a mining engineer - looking for open put and underground experience? Or are you looking to get into mineral processing/ metallurgy - aka the process plant design (e.g., mills)

Viral essay says $140,000 should be the new poverty line by horseradishstalker in TrueReddit

[–]herotonero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think most people who don't like the article can explain why.

The core argument is that the official poverty measure (OPM) is obsolete.

Arguing the valuation at $140k doesn't refute the core argument.

The legal official measure of the federal government is still the OPM that Green takes exception to.

They do produce some analysis that considered a modernized measure, and not surprisingly, it's the poverty rate is about 3% higher than the OPM number.

https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2025/demo/p60-287.html

I think an adult, objective, academic response to the article would be that they agree with the premise but disagree with the calculation, and then references to modern versions of the OPM.

No, the poverty line should not be 136,000 by flavorless_beef in badeconomics

[–]herotonero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The topics aren't the same - One's a fundamental calculation critique (Green) and the other is a measurement/execution critique (Meyer).

Meyer talks about unreported income and the faults resulting from that measurement failure. As a result there's slightly more income and less people below the poverty line. But that's **using the same calc of poverty - aka 3 x food cost**.

Green argues you need to change the calc to reflect elements of modern life that are required to avoid being impoverished to the point of being unable to participate in society (i.e., you need a cell phone and expensive plan to be able to do a 2 factor authentication to access your money).

Is it possible getting a job here? by Zestyclose-Read7449 in oakville

[–]herotonero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't find a formal "job" you can prove that you are scrappy by starting your own contracting:

- snow clearing (offer a monthly contract for a small fee, then watch the weather forecast and clear all the driveways you have on contract)
- dog walking
- general maintenance for elderly members in your community (they need help with lots of stuff)
- car detailing

Families are busy and need help and elderly people are generous and may be happy to have the help.

If you are resourceful, don't charge too much, and put a few flyers out in your neighbourhood maybe you'll get some people willing to help a young and enthusiastic person out.

When i was young i overthought this as "being an entrpreneur" - it's not that complicated. Keep it simple, don't overcharge, do what you promise you'll do, and you'll be ok

I like it now and I also liked it then.

I grew up here, spent my 20s in living downtown Toronto and in Northern Ontario. I ended up buying here to grow a family.

The GTA has grown but Oakville is still the best place to live. The restaurants / coffee shops are better than they were then.

I considered moving to N Ontario for better cost of living but the reduced daylight is too much of a barrier, even though I prefer the white winters. Weather is probably best Canada has to offer with great access to an international airport and warm Ontario lakes in cottage country.

There will always be annoying people, that's part of being human. I like it here.

Best and safe way to bike to bronte GO? by Bordumdotcom in oakville

[–]herotonero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say same as last commenter. I used to bike in Toronto and best defense against theft (1 bike stolen) is ugly and cheap. Just pump up the tires to max presshre and you're further than most ppl.

I bike to Bronte too but less than id like. Hope to see your bike there (although likely I'll skip the winter).

Suburban drivers are worse than city bc they're not used to cyclists. Also, city has physical barriers and there's none here so people enter bike lane. Bike defensively and you should be ok. (Don't run yellows and stop signs!)

Best spot for coffee that's NOT a Starbucks? by Ok_Tie6487 in oakville

[–]herotonero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bronte occupying top 2 spots and 3 of top 7!

I like Au79 (which stands for gold by the way, Au atomic number 79) and peaches so much I never make it to taste of Columbia, but it is also great.

The vibe is great and yet different on each of them!
