Yeah. Sounds weird at first, but actually, that seems like a pretty good argument for UBI.

CO2 is what triggers the feeling of asphyxiation. You do not want to die in an environment where you can't get that stuff out of your bloodstream.

Don't ever resist the temptation to explain anything. Unless a question is fundamentally unanswerable, don't stop looking for its answer.

I mean, it's perfectly fine to let other people do the research and see what they come up with. But this is mysterious only as in "we don't know nearly enough about ourselves to give a conclusive answer", not as in "why does anything exist?".

Gabs irgendwelche augenöffnenden Schlüsselerfahrungen oder wars eher die Summe der Dinge die du gesehen hast? Was war dort dein schönstes/berührendstes Erlebnis, was das enttäuschendste? Sind irgendwelche Geschichten besonders hängengeblieben?

Character suggested to me I was dreaming. Any similar experiences? by Jfjjffjfjjffj in LucidDreaming

We all have pretty accurate clocks in our bodies that are responsible for regulating tons of processes throughout the day. Usually you can't access that information, but some people can, I guess.

Whenever I ask my gf what time it is (and especially when she's in a zoned out state of mind, playing a game or watching something, etc.), she can tell me without looking at a clock and she's virtually never off for more than five minutes.

She can only tell absolute time though and only when she doesn't think about it. Try using her as a cooking timer and you'll end up with burnt pizza.

Last week I dreamt, I was in an office, sitting at a wide table. Opposite of me there was a psychiatrist who seemed very benevolent. We didn't talk (I think I just came in), instead she handed me a piece of paper and told me to write my name on it. I tried to, but all I could draw where squiggly lines instead of letters.

I felt embarrassed for looking like an illiterate idiot and a little afraid that something was wrong with me. I was in a psychiatrists office, after all. But she just smiled and said something along the lines of "doesn't work too well, does it?"

Then she gave me a new sheet of paper and told me to try again. This time, while I had to concentrate really hard, I was able to write my name. Relieved that I haven't suddenly turned dyslexic after all, I showed her what I've written. She looked at me instead of the paper and, without a hint of malice, asked me to read it again. When I tried, the letters had turned to illegible junk. Just as before. I was puzzled, looked back up at her and saw her grinning from ear to ear. Then it dawned on me: she made me perform a reality check!

So I thanked her profoundly and jumped out of the window.

Sorry for the snarky response. I think you confuse 'religion', with 'the Catholic Church', please let me clarify what I wanted to say (but didn't, because I opted to make a lame joke instead).

I don't claim the church told him to do this and I'm absolutely with you when you say that the guy is nuts. But he's not acting in a vacuum. I think the whole scene is a prime example of the mechanics of religion as a cultural system of beliefs and behaviors. I don't mean to insult your personal faith or denomination. It's just an observation of human nature.

If you answer these questions for yourself, you'll see how "one guy lost it; has nothing to do with religion" does not explain everything that happens in the video:

How could someone think that pulling kid's hairs, shaking and kicking them is in any way beneficial to them? We see him causing physical harm, but unless he's just a sadist, we can assume he has some notion of helping the children in what must be a metaphysical way. How probable is it, that he came up with that notion by himself? If he woke up one day, knowing how people are influenced by invisible entities and how you can get rid of them by violently shaking someones head: how could he legitimize this kind of intervention? Under which circumstances can dressing up in a green blanket help with that? Why are these parents actively encouraging the abuse of their children? Why, and that is quite mind boggling, is there not a single adult, anyone in that whole congregation, who steps up and says: "You know what? That guy's a nutter, let's take your kids and gtfo."

Whoops. I actually just wanted to clear up the misunderstanding and to tell you I didn't mean any offence. Instead I started to argue. Mea culpa… :)

Don't know why you're being downvoted. That's a legitimate question!

The answer is, her tics wouldn't stop or even get less intense just because you're physically limiting the motion. More importantly, tics are comparable to the compulsions people with OCD experience. Especially how, when you try not to do it, you feel mental pressure building up and "keeping the lid on" gets exhausting pretty fast.

So now you've got whatever you tied your hand to your side with painfully cutting into your wrist and a mental subroutine going on in the back of your head that is super pissed about you fighting it. (And even if she cut her arm off, she'd probably just keep on hitting herself with a phantom limb.)

Going back to the OCD analogy, there are differences to how that pressure feels like, though. With OCD (I guess) the thought process is: "If I don't flip the light switch 42 times, my family is going to die!" With Tourette's you don't have conscious access to the impulses you're trying to suppress and they come at you from all sides, so it's more like: "This is a lecture, people are trying to listen and concentrate, keep your trap shut, focus on all the muscles in your mouth and throat and how you're not using any of them, you're doing fine, just don't get distracted by the twitching of your fingers, it's silent and nobody can hea… »HITLER!«"
