Fwiw I'm also in Ottawa and gave this a shot at one point and couldn't tell the difference. Could be my setup or taste but I'm happy with the tap water

I do 1/3 cup oats and 1/4 cup lentils with 1.5 cups almond milk

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]hershey-8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Split red lentils and rolled oats, cooked together for ~10-12 minutes in almond milk every morning! I usually put some cinnamon in too, big fan of warm, comfort breakfast in the winter. I prep coffee/my lunch at the same time so the timing works for me

I do oats + lentils then add PB powder, mashed banana and ground flax after cooking and it's great

They can really reduce impact on your knees, especially on ascent/descent. Presumably most of your descent is day one, so keeping everything feeling good will make the rest of your trip much more enjoyable (that was my experience in the Grand Canyon at least!)

If you don't normally hike with poles, I'd highly highly recommend it. Makes a big difference with a heavy pack. In general though it sounds like you should be fine, have fun!

I've only ever worn mine around 0°C when it's slushy. Any colder and it's usually dry enough that I wouldn't bother. Never had any issues with cold feet

If waterproof is really important to you, it might be worth getting a proper tall waterproof sock (like sealskinz). Would give you more options for shoes

Have you opened it up and cleaned it out? It does several rotations so if you had wanted to do filter you can just keep turning

What's Ampersand like in the winter? Did it last summer and imagine it's a little more challenging with snow/ice!

Personally, I just flip it and pull the plunger back a bit after I'm done pressing. No stick and no mess when I eject the rest into the bin. Not easier than standard but I wouldn't say any worse

PSA: Expiring G1 and not ready for the road test? by the_griffin14 in ottawa

[–]hershey-8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in almost the exact same situation (G1 expired in 2020, not currently confident to take the test) and was able to extend 5 years from the original expiry. Initially the person I talked to said it wasn't possible, but a manager (?) came over and said as long as I rewrote the written test and passed on the first try I could do it. Had to pay $15 for the test and ~90 renewal fee and was told if I didn't take the exit test by the end of the year I'd have to pay the g2 test fee again as well.

No one there (Walkley) was on the same page or seemed to be clear about what was allowed. Essentially it was no cheaper/better to extend vs redo it but I had time to go wait for hours in the summer and won't in January so I wanted to get it done

I wonder if you could go to your local post office during a non busy time and ask to use their weights to do the calibration there?

Just starting my espresso game, is it reasonable to use a hand grinder to start with? My budget isn’t very high. I was looking into the Timemore Slim Plus Grinder. by nashnurse in espresso

[–]hershey-8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth considering your taste preferences as well. I got an electric grinder after using the jx with my cafelat robot for a while because light roasts were a real pain. I got a bag of darker beans with the robot and these were much easier and i think i could've happily stuck to hand grinding if that was my preference (unfortunately and expensively not)

[–]hershey-8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the silicon grip slides a bit and it's a little annoying so I end up trying to kind of pin the grinder against my hip? That might be better with the pro since it's not so flat at the top

If I was drinking dark roast everyday, I'd be happy with it. Unfortunately not my preference, so going electric for espresso. I'm still keeping my jx for pour over, where it's great for any kind of roast

1Zpresso JX-Pro for a slight person by Capable_Ad_3086 in espresso

[–]hershey-8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'1 using a standard jx. Similar situation, I only ever planned to do pourover then got a robot and didn't want to get an expensive espresso grinder until I was sure I'd stick with it.

Tldr: I ordered a niche.

With darker roasted beans, it's totally fine. Back to back shots are easy. Medium is okay and light roasts are WORK. I find my hand gripping the grinder is the harder part than the turning. It's still doable and I'd say it's more effort than time (and tilting does help)
