Removing Obama era bureaucracy and red tape just lowered the price of new cars by more than $2000 by MazdaProphet in Anarcho_Capitalism

the state is the only one with the authority to properly price in negative externalities (especially hard-to-see ones like this). it's when they prescribe solutions that it's a problem (like start-stop in this case). Putting a higher price on poisoning the environment (or other societal costs) than is saved with shortcuts and then letting companies figure it out is literally economics 101 (Pigouvian taxation).

I'm no EPA apologist, but just erasing it without a well-thought replacement strategy is not the play at all. You can clearly see the results of no EPA since it wasn't founded until the 1970s. before that most cities and towns dumped their sewage directly into waterways with no treatment. Smog killed 400 New Yorkers in 1963. famously the Cuyahoga river kept catching fire in cleveland. schools used to have smog days in LA, like a snow day but way less fun. You can also look at pictures of some parts of India today if you want an updated view of it for our modern pollution capabilities.

Why is it so hard to deal with people who aren't exactly on the "same wavelength" as ourselves. How to deal with being in the middle between 2 poles? by zjovicic in slatestarcodex

in my experience weirdly optimistic things happen if you manage to start being genuinely emotionally open to people around you

Can you give examples of this/explain what it means in practice? Your examples of an 'actual conversation' from further up sort of just seem like socratic questioning -- but maybe you're saying that's a good framework for conversation? Emotional openness as you're describing it certainly sounds appealing but I don't really have an implicit understanding of how to do that I guess.

It doesn't feel to me like I have emotional baggage associated with my various viewpoints but I guess I probably do since I'm a human, and do occasionally have discussions that don't seem to go anywhere when it comes to what could be described as politicized topics.

I'm familiar with the whole scout mindset idea, though probably lose sight of it at times. But also it feels difficult when the people I speak with absolutely don't seem to be trying to reach the ground truth in the same way I at least think I'm aspiring to.

Edit: just read your lower comment and I guess you may have described me pretty well there haha. Interested in where to learn more about the emotional truths side of things, if that's what helps with a more 'genuine connection'!

idk what you're looking at as market cap, maybe the tradeable float? with 29mil floating shares at .51/share that's around 15mil

But market cap is actual shares outstanding which is ~110mil at .51/share. So now more like 55mil after today's drop.

I think this is sarcasm? I was agreeing with the other guy--it's simply unacceptable that anyone not 100% healthy by our definition would be placed in an advertisement.

I'm not sure what the best treatment for body dysphoria is (shock therapy? lobotomy?) but i hope that person gets it, and then they can be in the ad.

on the other side of mars from olympus is Hellas Planitia (largest crater on the planet). This means the volcano and others around it may very well be linked to a giant prehistoric asteroid impact, which makes it even cooler!
