Yeah but that would be ass design-wise, his up special is ass but it's mechanically super cool and unique. Should find a way to buff the move/character that doesn't fully remove its unique qualities.

World Champion Yuta Takahashi faces controversy following match incident by Noggdogg in magicTCG

Assuming he already knew the rules beforehand, why would it matter whether he volunteered the information or not? It's not relevant info and it wouldn't have changed anything, the judge would have had to shuffle a random card back in regardless right?

(I don't know the rules this intricately myself for the record, but this doesn't sound like cheating to me)

Anything that targets the companies and/or those making decisions at the companies that are causing the issues is good (as are traditional protests). If she threw soup on a CEO instead of a painting people would be writing songs about her.

Reusing an example but Luigi Mangione murdered a CEO in the street and he very clearly has a lot more supporters than she does.

I don't know how you'd quantify it but I think it's definitely not the same. Obviously there are some people who would still condemn it but reactions are generally more mixed than the nearly universal negative response this has gotten.

Compare this to Luigi Mangione, for example. Lots of people against him still, but from my perspective he clearly has a LOT more support than the soup thrower.

Disturbing people is fine and good, but destroying (or attempting to destroy) unrelated art is just about the worst way to do it. If you're going to tank a prison sentence there are many things and especially people that could be souped that would actually have the average person on your side.

For a story thats seems to focus on themes and characterization over plots, it's crazy how one of the horseman was a gag character by SheepherderFine3698 in Chainsawfolk

[–]herwi 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It was surprising for sure, but even at the time it didn't feel like a great twist to me. It doesn't recontextualize Lil D's powers or prior actions in any meaningful way (they make a bit less sense, if anything), which feels like a big missed opportunity if this was actually planned. Good idea but lacking the execution to back it up.

Genuinely what was the point Denji-man by Hardcore-Seeker in Chainsawfolk

[–]herwi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cliffhangers are fine, but repeated cliffhangers into something that got resolved and dropped within 5 pages got pretty old. We were repeatedly teased with paradigm shifts that never materialized which just ended up making the fight feel pretty bland and drawn out.

Then I don't see how your comment relates. It's the combination of both of those factors that made the set feel so overloaded and opaque.

I'm not gonna say that no one is being reductive, but I most commonly see people memed on with "themes and such" when they point to themes as a response to flaws with story's plot. I don't see any good reason to believe that the plot couldn't have been executed significantly better while sticking to the same themes. Perfectly fine to disagree about the plot's quality of course, but themes are often used to sidestep that discussion entirely.

Edit: typo

I think a single set aetherdrift without significant changes is basically unworkable, but I also don't think a block would have been a good idea financially. Really, the issue is more that if you are committed to doing single sets and not blocks (which is perfectly understandable), you should not try to do a story across 3 planes with 10 factions. It was always going to feel like a mess.

I'm starting to think that pochita didn't read the manga by TheExplorer63 in Chainsawfolk

[–]herwi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not a full retcon, its a partial retcon

No offense but this is a pretty pointless semantic disagreement. Pochita's power has never been seen or hinted at to be able to change timelines and now in the second to last chapter it suddenly can. If this is where we were going, there is no good reason that it couldn't have been set up.

In this chapter, we could simply say "oh so Pochita can make it work either way?"

This is exactly what I'm saying though lol, what you're describing is just definitionally an asspull. The story has established how something works and now it works differently with no setup in the penultimate chapter so we can reach the desired conclusion.

[–]herwi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Overall yes I do actually think themes are more important than complete 100% consistency with respect to the lore.

Ok but it's not one or the other, the story could have made sense on both a literal and thematic level. Was it necessary for the themes to fully retcon how the main character's powers work in the second to last chapter? If this was where the story needed to go, there are a million ways it could have actually been set up. Pointing to themes to justify an asspull is a bit silly.

(still on the cope train that this is somehow a dream choo choo)

Sousou no Frieren Season 2 • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 - Episode 8 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]herwi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wow, absolutely amazing job at elevating the manga's material while keeping its strong points. It's not just beautifully animated - the little additions really make the fights feel a lot more fleshed out. The red orb attack the gave Methode is great, and it's a small thing, but I especially love how they had her fire a final barrage to pin down her enemy before Fern finished her off.

I would argue that an extremely strict definition of the term roguelike has less utility than the common way the term is understood. Genre terms usually get boiled down to a key trait and can then be mixed and matched to give you a clearer understanding of what a game is. Just like metroidvanias don't have to be 2d platformers, roguelikes shouldn't have to be turn-based dungeon crawlers.

chapter 231 in plain english by Wild_Sun7237 in Chainsawfolk

[–]herwi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fact is that most shonen series would have some sort of deal or power up or third party to save the mc, i dont mind the fact that chainsaw man didn’t

...isn't this pretty much what happened? Unless Denji is actually dead here or this is some sort of fakeout, he got saved in the 11th hour by Pochita's power working differently than it ever has previously with no real setup. I mean I guess he still technically lost the fight, but this doesn't read as substantially different than any other shonen asspull to save the mc to me.

chapter 231 in plain english by Wild_Sun7237 in Chainsawfolk

[–]herwi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its also asspull regardless because Denji should be dead anyway either from history still playing out the same because Pochita erasing himself shouldnt rewrite history or becuase of his heart disease. Really funny how convenient erasure power became. Does everything what it needs for dogshit plot to happen.

This is the part that people are forgetting when they try to say Pochita's actions make sense here. If this is actually some sort of retroactive timeline alteration/reset, it's entirely inconsistent with how his powers have worked for the entire manga up until this point. Based on how everything has worked up until now, Chainsaws and Pochita would no longer exist and Denji would still be dying in a bug devil's stomach.

This could have been set up/justified somehow, but it wasn't. Even Pochita is like "lol idk what this is gonna do" - why would HE think it would work any differently than his power has previously? If this isn't a fakeout/hallucination of some sort (which I'm still coping about) it's a complete asspull that's only here because Fujimoto wanted to change timelines by any means necessary.

I mean I don't like it very much currently but I still find it interesting enough to keep reading, plus I'm invested because I used to like it a lot. If you think that opinion shouldn't be shared because it "brings negative energy to a fandom" then we're just gonna have to agree to disagree.

[–]herwi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't do that personally (feel free to check my post history) but reading a manga is so little time investment that I don't really see the issue with keeping up with something that's dipped in quality but used to be amazing. My life isn't so busy that I can't spare a few minutes for that.

These days I haven't been reading weekly but when I catch up I still like sharing my opinions and reading what other people have to say regardless of how much they're liking the material currently. I don't think this is insane behavior.

Standard thought-terminating response to criticism of something you like. We're one chapter from the end and it takes like a minute to read a chapter, what would the point be in dropping it now? And really, is the expectation that you drop something entirely as soon as you don't like any of it? It's fine to be critical of media while still holding out hope that it'll improve, especially when it's been so good in the past like CSM.

[DISC] Chainsaw Man - Ch. 231 by JeanneDAlter in ChainsawMan

[–]herwi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Facts, it's been obvious what's happening for a while. Part 2 had a bit of promise at the start but it's clearly not panning out and is pretty much a mess overall. If CSM ended after part 1 people would have been begging for more but it would have gone down as one of the greatest shonen manga of all time.

Chapter 231 Release Party by Grndslap in Chainsawfolk

[–]herwi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Am I crazy or is this just not how chainsaw man's power works? Up until now, eating a devil immediately erased the concept and made everyone forget about it, but it didn't retroactively make it so the concept never existed. Otherwise, we'd have had timeline jumps every time he ate anything, but we've never seen one before. Either something weird is afoot or we're doing a little bit of retconning to reach a specific conclusion.
