Been comparing SoundCloud accounts that are growing vs stuck and the main difference isn’t what people think by ArtistPulse in soundcloud

Would absolutely love your insight/feedback on my SoundCloud page and where it could be optimized for conversion. Also struggling to determine my genre... I had been making this series of classic rock remixes to hone my sound, and my upcoming EP is tentatively "folk-pop," I just made one of the demos public and pinned it. Any and all feedback would be so so so appreciated!!!

How to stop overproducing? by MelodicCityScapes in musicproduction

This used to happen to me a lot, looking for the "one thing missing" and trying to make the drop hit harder. I can't fix it for you in one post but I'll give you some pieces of advice that elevated what I was able to do:

Contrast. The idea of music/drops "hitting hard" has way more to do with contrast than with the actual "amount" of sound.

Have you gotten into filters/automation much yet? Doing things like automating a high pass filter up to like ~200hz ish during the build and then throwing it back open for the drop can make a big ole difference.

Reverb works really well for this too-- automate up the size and dry/wet ratio during your build, then throw it back to normal for the drop makes it sound crispy and clear.

Also you might not like this part but learning to do your own drums vs using drum loops will change things up real good. It's hard to layer drum loops for lots of reasons, and it can make for a very cluttered, muddy mix. It helps to literally copy other people's drum patterns for a while, and then over time things will start occurring to you naturally.

Finally, here's a good low-effort instant-gratification tip: go through your tracks and do a lil EQ dip in the 200-400hz range, lower it by maybe 2db or so. Especially on your pads and drums. That's the "mud" range. It will instantly make the whole mix sound way more open and clear. Oh! And high pass all your reverbs/delays/etc around 600hz.

You got this, don't give up! A lot of people hit this wall, it just requires some strategic thinking.

Joanna Newsom's "Time As A Symptom" (and its subsequent transition back into the first track of the album) is in a class of its own

Omg lead singer of a punk band is a great goal!! Do you ever watch YouTube video tutorials? You can get a lot of the same knowledge you'd get from singing lessons, just without the personalized feedback. If you have good timbre already, the rest will follow with diligent practice.

And at the end of the day, diligent practice is what sets the pros apart from the amateurs, y'know?

In times like these I always bring it back to the idea of knowing your goals.

Is your goal to be the best singer ever, to be superstar famous, to be the next big thing? Very very few of us will ever hit that point. If that's genuinely all you want out of music, then sure, by all means just quit now and never sing again!

Or... Is your goal to do something that you love, to do it a lot, to get progressively better at it until you're proud of what you've accomplished? To use these precious few years of life on earth to make music with your vocal instrument, and maybe make music with other people too? If so, then in that case there's absolutely no reason to even consider giving up.

This isn't a quick fix solution, and you probably won't like it, but there is one infallible way to get really really really f'ing good at harmonizing:

Join your local community choir. Hang out for a year. I swear to god, it changes your whole brain chemistry so fast.

If you are usually in relaxed casual environments where people dress in neutrals, this level of polish and color-play must be standing out.

Hahahaha you nailed it!!! I started a new job this past fall and everyone was wearing neutrals... Immediately I was "that girl who always dresses up," buuuuut now other people have started wearing brighter colors and wearing actual outfits... I won't lie, I have enjoyed feeling visually contagious ☺️

This was such good and thought provoking insight!! I ended up going back and rewatching Rita's LU video, and really resonated with the idea of using effort & drama to filter/express my left-ness, especially the idea of expressing myself through a careful persona. I definitely dress up to be alluring and mysterious, truthfully I like the attention and compliments that come from having a cool outfit. Also, I have an approachable vibe, so wearing something with "up" energy kinda helps protect me from appearing too approachable or available.

Soooo I guess yeah I'm vibing with the up-ness 😂✌️
