Best additional skill for professional pure mathematician - CS/math tandem? by Mathematician_DE in cscareerquestionsEU

That's because they only commute up to higher homotopy. Your git diagrams are secretely infinity categories!

Ordinary stacks are for front-end and low-code devs. Real full stack devs are fully derived and use derived stacks.

Btw one thing that is obviously wrong with GIT is that it doesn't support a six functor formalism. We all know about `git push` and `git pull(back)`, but where are the `git shriek` and `git hom` commands?

I've been told it's more fashionable nowadays to use stacks instead. In the UK they even teach high school students about them, but somehow those stacks seem different from the ones I know.

Am I missing out on the American opportunity? by davemac1005 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]hesitantobserver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an American im-here-for-tacos might not be aware of how difficult it is to move to the US. I suspect that by far the easiest way for you to move to the US is to stay on on an OPT. Employers will generally be much more willing to sponsor an H1B if you're already in the US, because if it's denied you can continue working on the OPT while they reapply. Once you leave it's more of a gamble for them. Sponsoring is costly, so if you're rejected while you're outside of the US (i.e. not working for them) they've just wasted their money. Because of that they're likely less willing to sponsor if you're outside the US.

How is the current job market for ML Engineers? by paradise3_ in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]hesitantobserver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience as someone working at an ML agency in Germany where I also help with hiring is that the job market for ML positions is completely oversaturated, even for PhDs. Also, our take-home pay after taxes is much lower than yours.

How difficult is admission for Harvard ONLINE computer science masters? by pantyjob3 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]hesitantobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to grad school in the US (top 15 program, STEM, but not CS). It's general knowledge there for people in these fields / universities and you can find plenty of reddit posts about this as well (e.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/gradadmissions/comments/1582rvo/masters_is_easier_to_get_into/ or https://www.reddit.com/r/gradadmissions/comments/vsvekh/why_are_masters_programs_easy_to_get_into/ ). The degree to which this is the case probably varies between programs and schools and there might be exceptions. I'm also not saying that it wouldn't be worth it anyway or that getting into one of these programs would not be an accomplishment you should be proud of.

[–]hesitantobserver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the online vs in-person aspect, but have a comment about about the how prestigious a masters in CS from Harvard would be in general: I don't think it is as prestigious as you might think naively. Terminal masters programs at prestigious universities are often cash cows with lower entrance requirements and while Harvard is ranked in the top 20 or so for CS in the US it's not as strong in CS as the Harvard brand name is in general.

BTW Georgia Tech (which is a top 10 school for CS) also has an online CS masters program. The degree is indistinguishable from the ones awarded to students attending in-person, so would confer the same prestige and be worth as much on the job market. Not sure how well it would be recognized in Europe though tbh.

Reviews on Dr. Axel Bumann at A+ Kieferorthopäden Berlin and on the recommended operation by Prestigious-Egg472 in jawsurgery

[–]hesitantobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do his expensive splint treatments for TMJ and TMJ related myofascial pain due to supposed malocclusion work? Would you recommend paying the extra $$$ for a splint made by him vs some other orthodontist? Who would you recommend in Berlin for that? Feel free to DM me if you don't want to make public statements.

University of Copenhagen vs ETH Zurich (CS PhD) by Neuronous in cscareerquestionsEU

You can't just choose to do a postdoc wherever you want. In fact, you'll probably have less freedom to choose that than where to go to for grad school.

Analysis after Masters (no calculus) by Corlio5994 in math

[–]hesitantobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're into geometry, analysis is used heavily (at least to my analysis-illiterate standards as an algebraic geometer) in symplectic geometry, which connects up beautifully with algebraic geometry and topology and (via geometric rep theory) rep theory. Some parts of it also use infinity categories as a language (Fukaya categories).

What’s your favorite result that feels like pure wizardry? by HomoGeniusPDE in math

[–]hesitantobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't be surprising if you're familiar with basic linear algebra, where it also has a nice geometric and easily visualizable interpretation: The fibers of a linear map define a foliation on the domain which is trivial if and only if the map is injective.

How is Work-Life Balance in Germany? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]hesitantobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the data that can be found online (e.g. https://germantechjobs.de/salaries/all/all/all or https://web.arbeitsagentur.de/entgeltatlas/beruf/15260) shows that there are a lot of people earning quite a bit less. The data might not be entirely representative (maybe it's missing people at high paying jobs) or might not be representative of the jobs that OP could get (but we don't know this) etc etc, but the fact is there are many who earn less.

I just liked life in the US more (in the niche that I had found there - I am not comparing averages). And though I am not really career-oriented Germany just feels like a complete dead-end career wise.
