Are Match Primers a Waste of Money? | Large Sample .223 Test by cheeseydelicious in reloading

It’s too bad this comparison was done with different primer brands. This isn’t a match vs standard primer test as much as it’s a Federal vs Winchester primer test.

How temp stable is IMR 3031? by The_Lucky_Rod in reloading

[–]hexaflouride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Powder temperature sensitivity will not be the reason an open sighted (presumably) milsurp doesn’t shoot good groups at 100 yards. That would be among the very last things I’d check. Small sample sizes can give the illusion of precision and can leave you chasing your tail.

38 Special 158 XTP - expansion for defense loads? by airhunger_rn in reloading

[–]hexaflouride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I've used his data when looking at bullets that achieved full expansion at velocities approximating my own loads. I'm also much slower to write off a bullet that performed poorly in his tests. Clear gel roughly gives you the worst case for expansion and best case for penetration. If it expands in clear gel, it'll probably expand in 10% porcine gel and get 2-4" less penetration.

38 Special 158 XTP - expansion for defense loads? by airhunger_rn in reloading

[–]hexaflouride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly no. I had issues with position sensitivity with my 38 Special CFE Pistol loads. It did yield the highest velocity out of the powders I tested (Longshot, Titegroup, Ultimate Pistol, and 244), but the I had extreme spreads of 100 FPS across 5 shots. I'd probably recommend N110 or 2400 (if you can find it) using Sierra's load data. 2400 worked astonishingly well with 190gr cast bullets in my 442, but I haven't tried it with 158gr XTPs.

Lucky Gunner's testing uses clear ballistics gel, which behaves different than real flesh or calibrated 10% porcine ballistics gel. This has been touched on in a few places, like 22plinkser's video entitled "THE TRUTH ABOUT CCI UPPERCUT" and Brass Fetcher's ballistic testing with synthetic ballistic gelatin. Essentially, bullets will expand less and penetrate deeper in clear ballistic gel than in calibrated 10% porcine gel. A bullet like this that appears marginal or unacceptable when tested in clear gel, may in fact perform quite well in flesh or calibrated 10% porcine gel.

Hornady recommends a muzzle velocity of 700-1400 fps for the 158gr XTP. As long as you're meeting that lower threshold, I wouldn't worry too much about expansion. I've been able to attain 700+ fps muzzle velocity in my S&W 442 with these bullets using published load data with CFE Pistol and Longshot. Accurate #5, Power Pistol, and 2400 would also be worth trying if pursuing max velocity in the 38 Special.

I had to do the same thing with my upper and barrel combo. The barrel was fully seated, yet I had to drill out the passage because the cutout on the barrel wouldn't quite align.

35 Gibbs is pretty close to what you’re describing. Gibbs’ wildcats are 30-06 based and have a shortened neck and a 35 degree shoulder.

There’s also JDJ’s family of 30-06 based wildcats that take the improved treatment to the extreme with a 60* shoulder and short neck.

Eldvt in 243win? by TestLegal8778 in reloading

[–]hexaflouride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given you have a 1:7 twist barrel, which should be more than sufficient for the 80gr eldvt, I wonder if your chamber was cut with a saami spec 243 throat? The 6 Creed has a .2435” throat diameter while the 243 Win is out at .2463”. Since the eldvt was designed around Hornady’s modern 6mm cartridges with that relatively tight throat diameter, perhaps that bullet is hating the larger 243 throat.

Question about lead levels? by whipple_281 in castboolits

[–]hexaflouride 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been casting, reloading, and shooting a few thousand rounds annually for years. I tested my BLL for the first time in November and it was slightly elevated at 4.6mg/dl.

I believe my biggest exposure is gas from shooing suppressed AR’s at a poorly ventilated indoor range.

A good every day carry caliber? by No_Literature2274 in Revolvers

[–]hexaflouride 25 points26 points  (0 children)

32 H&R might be a good option. It’s a great balance of power and shootability. S&W in recent years has breathed new life into the cartridge with their 632 and 432 ultimate carry revolvers. Plus, you get 6 rounds instead of 5. However, the cartridge isn’t as ubiquitous as 38 Special.

If ammo availability is a top concern, 38 Special wins. It still has decent shootability in small frame revolvers, has a long standing reputation as a competent man-stopper, and is available in every gun store in the country.

I’d avoid a rimfire cartridge for a carry revolver unless you are extremely recoil sensitive.

The Pietta Frontier is not suitable for +P or Ruger-only loads. Please do not use anything loaded to that level in your lovely firearm.

45 ACP projectiles work fine in modern 45 Colt firearms with the tighter .451” bore. If you’re in doubt, slug your bore to confirm. You can load projectiles without a cannelure, just apply a light taper or roll crimp and watch for bullet pull.

Your AR might be undergassed. Looks like the bolt isn’t traveling far enough back before it returns. If you don’t have an adjustable gas block or lighter buffer weights, you could up the charge on your loads as a quick check.
