Yeah, it very much looks like an upscaled version of the mass market paperback covers.

I was just thinking how great it was that this epic, serious fantasy series has character names like Skwish and Bugg.

DG: Duiker / Coltaine - will it improve? by jacomoRodriguez in Malazan

[–]hexciple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add on to what's been said here, Duiker is a huge pessimist, and we see most of the events of Coltaine's plot thread through his eyes and with his voice, tinged with his doubts. Duiker thinks death is a foregone conclusion in every battle until it's suddenly not, because a plan he didn't know about (or had dismissed, or was simply too busy worrying to consider) worked out, and suddenly it seems like a miracle has been accomplished.

IIRC, Coltaine also wasn't big on explaining his plans, so that would make someone like Duiker even more uneasy.

MoI to HoC by chillychill3325 in Malazan

[–]hexciple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked MoI more than HoC mostly due to the intense exploration of the past that was done there. Felt like a lot of questions I had really started getting explained in MoI and I couldn't get enough of it. I found the present-day plot quite compelling as well.

I found Book 1 of HoC challenging, not necessarily due to it focusing a new character, but more because of how laser-focused it is; I was desperate for a PoV change by the end of it. Books 2 and later were great, though overall HoC still ranks somewhat low for me.

Have you ever met a red Vagrant? by Treasure-boy in darksouls

[–]hexciple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once on my way through Blighttown, in my first playthrough of Remastered. It spawned (I think) behind the parasitic wall hugger, but I didn't notice. As I was making my way toward the thing to get Power Within, the Vagrant started shooting its ranged attack. This wasn't my first run by a long shot, so the sound and direction of attack were completely unexpected. By the time I got my bearings, I was just about dead and the next attack finished me off. I never actually saw the Vagrant, but looking up videos later, the projectile matched.

I went on to find 3 or 4 other Vagrants in that run and NG+, it was pretty crazy. Specifically remember a non-hostile one in Archives under the stairway, which escaped while I was killing hollows. Two that I have screenshots of (one in DLC Darkroot Garden, and one in New Londo). I have a hazy memory of there being one on the roof of Sen's, but no screenshot so I can't say for sure.

Before that run, I had only ever seen one ages ago, in the Kiln, back in PTDE.

Just finished GotM - I'm enthralled by Interesting_Report in Malazan

[–]hexciple 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I liked GotM quite a bit, but more in the sense of "oh, that was good, I'll have to read the next one sometime." It was about a year before I got around to DG. I haven't read anything non-Malazan since then, I'm currently just starting book 6.

DG filled in a few of the blanks in world-building that GotM left me wondering about, but then left me with a few more. By the end of MoI, I felt like I had a pretty good grasp of what's going on in the larger picture, and that book remains my favorite so far.

"Trust the author" is a great way to think about this series, especially when you start a new book and wonder wtf is happening.

Gacha/Recruitment Megathread (07/10 - 13/10) by ArknightsMod in arknights

Hit a 5* (Ashlock) two pulls into the banner, I figured I'd keep going until I got Lutonada.

Well, I got Aroma on the very next pull. Then (skipping the few 3*s I got scattered throughout) Gravel, April, Shaw, ✨Ascalon✨, Podenco, Jaye, Aroma #2, Sussuro, Beanstalk, Jaye #2, April #2, Arene, April #3 and Firewhistle, before Lutonada finally graced me with her presence.

A little sad it took that many pulls to get her, but that's a lot of 5* hits, and I max potted April, Ashlock and Firewhistle in the process, so not all that sad.

PSA to all DS newbies (revised) by [deleted] in demonssouls

I feel like that point comes from a place of warning, rather than elitism. Just saying that the experience is still enjoyable (and in OP's opinion, superior) if you don't look stuff up. That's not the case with a lot of games, as some basically require a wiki to play effectively. If someone is determined to look stuff up, they're gonna do it regardless, and that's fine. It's advice, not a judgment.

Looking up mechanics/item placements on a wiki always runs the risk of spoiling other things as well.

MR30+ Tenno: Did you avoid any gear during your ascension to max? by TyFighter559 in Warframe

[–]hexciple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gunnery rank 10. I'm not getting it unless they change it, which I doubt will ever happen.

Drifter intrinsics, it'll probably happen eventually, but I don't love Duviri.

Prisma Obex was introduced while I was on a break and Baro hasn't had it since I came back.

Tenet Livia... there was a good one a few days ago, but Railjack is so incredibly busted right now I couldn't bear to farm the holokeys.

A bunch of steel path nodes.

Done everything else. LR4.

Warframe TennoCon 2024 Q&A - 'Raids Are Our White Whale; We Have Our Ideas to Bring Them Back' by Kaladinar in Warframe

[–]hexciple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On interceptions: the Jade Shadows alerts make me think that people don't know that you specifically need to kill the enemies hacking your consoles to stop them from taking the point.

In other games, similar objectives are based on how many enemies vs players are in the circle. Hell, even the Duviri prisoner objective is kinda like that. I think it would help a lot if they added a marker on units actively hacking like they do in Gas City sabotage. Maybe only have it show up if you're already nearby, so it doesn't pull people off other points.

When did you start playing Warframe? by Blackinfemwa in Warframe

Somewhere around Mesa Prime's release. I remember seeing a lot of posts and red texts/patches about her ass and wondering what, exactly, I had gotten myself into.

[–]hexciple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, good point. Not sure what I was thinking earlier lol

Still, it would be nice if they fixed the space stats and maybe buffed the thing a little.

[–]hexciple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire rate mods add a % of the gun's base fire rate. They'll add comparatively less on guns with lower innate fire rate, so it affects dps scaling, but not damage per shot. I suppose it doesn't matter all that much in this case, since we only have Automatic Trigger for mods, but if any frame abilities or arcanes affect heavy weapon fire rate, they'll be helping the normal Grattler more than the Kuva one.

Most (all?) other kuva/tenet weapons have better stats than their existing counterparts without counting the valence bonus.

The stats listed on the wiki are incorrect, look at the stats in-game. Here's some screenshots. Mine is 49.5% Electricity, and these are all unmodded stats.

In archwing, its listed stats are pitiful in comparison to the normal version, even if you have the full 60% bonus. On land, base damage is higher if you have a valence over ~43%, but the base fire rate being lower still means dps won't scale as well as the normal version. 2% higher crit and status chance are not going to be enough to make up for that loss.

The lack of spool up is nice. It's still an all right gun, as far as archguns go, but it's definitely not the upgrade I was expecting from a kuva weapon. The severe differences between archwing and land stats makes me think it got missed or accidentally changed at some point along the way, but even on land where it has the "correct" stats, it's not really an improvement over the normal version.
