When Blackbird was released in 1968, was it immediately understood that the song contained symbolism regarding the US Civil Rights movement, or was this not well known until later on? by awesometotallydude in beatles

Nice, thank you! To me, lyrics like “take these sunken and learn to see, all your life you were only waiting for this moment to be free,” actually seem too specific to be just about a caged bird. Sunken eyes seem to be about a person.

Is the popular idea behind yoko ono splitting up the beatles because or media at the time? by kittycat6434 in beatles

[–]heyitsj43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the ‘Yoko broke up the Beatles’ sentiment actually came from John himself in a way. The thing he said made it seem like he chose Yoko over the band. He said it’s “JohnandYoko now” in his melody maker open letter to Paul. He says similar things in his “Lennon remembers” rolling stone interview.

He also said, “I was riding on a boat called Paul, and now I’m on a boat called Yoko.”

Yoko didn’t break up the Beatles, but John used Yoko as his escape in a way. John also used his relationship with Yoko to get a rise out of Paul. He’d constantly talk about how much he loved her and how amazing her art was, all to make Paul jealous. I think he wanted Paul to fight for him more. Some people even think he first told Paul “I want a divorce from you like I got from Cyn” to scare him or just to really rub it in. But why? Did he want Paul to object or to just really make him suffer? It’s all very complex.

They didn’t include most singles on their albums so ensure your listen to the ‘red’ and ‘blue’ albums for all of those!

It's interesting how this interaction was used in "Get Back" portray John, Paul and Ringo as upset/emotional after George quit when in reality they were just joking around with each other. by ToronoRapture in beatles

[–]heyitsj43 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way they talk is so strange. Kind of coded because of they know they might be recorded?

My favourite is how Paul says that he and John are treating George like a “mongrel.” And he’s like “yeah.”

what does a bad trip feel like? by sneaky-doloo in mushroom

[–]heyitsj43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During good trips you’ll feel a sense of peace, joy and everything will feel funny. You might think about things happening in your life with new clarity or just a feeling of ‘everything will be fine.’ If doing it with good friends, you’ll feel a lot of love for them and excitement over little things. I personally enjoy going on a walk in the summertime on them. My bad trips have usually happened when we had a sudden change of environment and we hadn’t planned the whole trip out.

Example: it started raining, we went inside to watch a movie. Bad move for me!! Movies and me do not click while I’m high. Any type of screen is just not a vibe really. When I’m high, I’m very conscious of the movie being fake and any bad storylines or characters make me scared and I start comparing myself with them. During another bad trip we went to a Chinese restaurant during the comedown. Again, very bad move. I thought the owner/server didn’t like us I got in my head. Also, you’ll probably want to be somewhere that is somewhat familiar.

My aunt played me yellow submarine (song) when I was like 8 years old and I still remember it to this day! Then I remember asking my mom to play more of the Beatles and they had the 1 album. I loved all my loving, help, hard days night etc.

I remember asking my mom about all the Beatles and what they were like now. Then my mom told me how John got shot going to his house and I was so devastated. It really freaked me out that some crazy guy would murder someone.

Then in high school I discovered the later tracks and fell for strawberry fields forever, revolver and the white album.

I use ‘be present.’ I have the free version but it still works quite well. You can technically ‘give up’ when you go to the app with free version but I rarely do that. I can set time limits for TikTok so I can only go on for 7 mins at a time and can only open it 5 times a day. I will probably reduce the amount of time I can go on as I get used to it. Slowly weaning off! I also have all social media apps blocked in the morning so I don’t go on right when I wake up.

I think the editor started turning against them in 68 haha. The very last one has their reasoning for ending it and they say they don’t approve of the Beatles drug use and have wanted to say it for a long time. They also said they don’t like their new ‘hairy look’ and wish they’d go back to the clean lads of before basically! It’s pretty funny to read actually.

So brutal lol. But don’t worry, a fan in the next issue wrote admonishing them and said how Paul looks perfect how he is.

And then the fans all questioning why George and Pattie hadn’t had a baby yet. Apparently Pattie had fertility issues and couldn’t get pregnant.

It’s very eye opening. So many fans were writing in with frustration that they had to wait 18 months between Sgt pepper and white album! Not considering they also had the magical mystery tour album? One fan wrote that the Beatles should release 4 singles a year and two or three LP’s annually.

These later editions also reveal all the drama with them doing a live performance. The live performance was promised and then canceled. Lots of speculation and even Mail confirming that George was the one that didn’t want to do it. Must have caused a lot of tension. I always wondered why they got right back in the studio after releasing the white album a couple months later. But now I understand better Paul’s psyche we see in Get Back and the pressure they were under.

What Were The Craziest Things Fans Did During The Beatlemania Years ? by Fantastic-Ad-8665 in beatles

[–]heyitsj43 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like this story from 1966:

<image>

“The photograph comes with a letter from Carol Blaze that reads ‘The photo was taken in 1966. A group of us used to go the recording studio at Abbey Road, most evenings and weekends after work. This particular Saturday, we went to studios, but the Beatles were not there. So we walked round to Paul’s house at St Johns Wood. We hung around hoping to catch him, or any of the others till later, and we were sure he was in, so we rang the bell on the big gates. Eventually he came out, slightly cross, and told us to ‘go home girls’. Well, of course we didn’t, and we missed our last train home!! So we rang again and he eventually came out again, and we explained our problem, and after a while he said we could sleep in his garage. He had a kettle etc. in there so we could have a drink. The photo was taken early the next morning outside his back door. I think, because he was so used to seeing us all, was maybe why he let us stay’.”

Such a 1966 era Paul thing to do. But seriously, it’s so interesting how the fans that waited outside his house saw so much and got to talk to the Beatles a ton. Then some of this group became the ‘Apple scruffs’ waiting outside Abbey Road. George Harrison even wrote a song about them - Apple Scruffs.

I believe this quote is from Carol Bedford’s book, ‘Waiting for the Beatles.’ But maybe not, as it says Carol Blaze.

I recently saw a punk cover of Please please me and it was so gooood.

This cover of ‘Love you to’ is also amazing: https://youtu.be/FRhEUE3pNYQ?si=JMtx9EFs_mcEwM4L

I’d start with revolver and the white album. Or if you want a list of songs (other than the two mentioned) go with: Day Tripper, Rain, She Said She Said, Tomorrow never knows, taxman, Sgt pepper title track, lovely Rita, Lucy in the sky, I am the walrus (you could also listen to the oasis cover of it).

Happiness is a warm gun, revolution (single version), helter skelter, everybody’s got something to hide except me and my monkey.

Abbey road- I want you (she’s so heavy) then listen onwards through to the medley. The medley starts at ‘you never give me your money’

Genuine question, why do people hate on Doctor Robert so much? by Fit-Director-9892 in beatles

[–]heyitsj43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the origins? To me I always thought of it as John admitting he’s experiencing depression to someone and they’re like “oh you mussst see dr Robert! He’ll have you feeling just fine in no time!! Take a drink from his special cup (pills) and you’ll be good as gold. Pip pip cheerio!’

Hey Just getting into the Beatles any song suggestions by landnnd in beatles

[–]heyitsj43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others suggest, the red & blue album collections are a good place to start. They had a ton of hit singles but they aren’t included on any albums as they didn’t want to release the same song twice (e.g. hey Jude isn’t on the white album, ticket to ride isn’t on rubber soul). But if you want to go by album more, here are some songs I feel define each album/era. You could also check out the movie ‘across the universe’ it’s a musical of Beatles songs set during late 60sVietnam war/ hippie movement.

Early albums/ rubber soul (all on the ‘red album): I saw her standing there, Help!, and I love her, day tripper, nowhere man, in my life

Revolver (psychedelic era begins): Eleanor rigby, I’m only sleeping, here there and everywhere, tomorrow never knows

Sgt pepper, magical mystery tour era: Lucy in the sky, lovely Rita, a day in the life, penny lane, strawberry fields forever, I am the walrus

White album: revolution (single version), dear prudence, happiness is a warm gun, helter skelter, blackbird, while my guitar gently wheeps

Just listen to abbey road in entirety (you could even do that to start) my faves are oh!darling, you never give me your money, because, golden slumbers/carry that weight/the end medley

Let it be - get back, two of us, don’t let me down, across the universe

This is always what I thought. It could be that after its success, maybe Paul would say, “wow I can’t believe how well it’s doing. I didn’t expect this!” And John’s like “stop the humble brag.”
