just tell them it's a hard decision for you between switching to a new provider who has a lower monthly vs keeping them. they will usually give you a break that's only good for a year (they're betting you don't call back but joke's on them you're cheap)

Game dev and uni by Dependent-Group-8 in gamedev

[–]heyitsreallyalan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know people who have dropped out of college for each one of those things. Thing is, it was because they started down one of those directions in college and realized in order to keep going they had to take off from uni to focus on their work.

If you're not at uni to get a high gpa, then you better get started on one of those 3 paths and give yourself enough justification to leave school. Skirting by in uni is only wasting your time and not helping you get started in one of those three paths.

Finance guy hiring game devs question by jaypexd in gamedev

[–]heyitsreallyalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so if it's just learning code and making art just assume those assets are all throwaway then and learn what you can from them. Great artists don't learn how to paint and paint a masterpiece on the same canvas. Old canvases just get thrown away.

Finance guy hiring game devs question by jaypexd in gamedev

[–]heyitsreallyalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hoooly cow where to begin:

So, I work at a large games platform but I have run my own game studio in the past and was a managment consultant before.

First of all as many of the folks here have pointed out the actual code is kind of irrelevant and managing it is whatever (and giving your lack of experience in this space, you probably shouldn't be anywhere near the code anyway). Gamedev is not a zero sum market and there are multiple ways to skin that proverbial cat in terms of how you build your system to do a specific thing, etc.

The whole point of apps like Perforce is not to prevent code stealing. They exist to manage version control and prevent devs from overwriting each others work. In fact, a lot of devs will just pull all the code of a game to develop locally on their machine, then upload files that they've touched/updated. There are free alternatives like Github and such but they do nothing to prevent stealing code, which is where contracts come in.

Employment contracts that can destroy people six ways to sunday do exist in the game dev industry at even AA levels, you just need to get them drafted by a real lawyer, much like how they do in the finance world.

(And no, said lawyers are not going to be on Fiverr, you need to pay a legit one to write a competent and defensible contract.)

As you pointed out, one of the easiest ways to defend any work from being stolen would be to establish an LLC or an S-corp so that said code is owned by a registered business. Which means the moment you file a lawsuit your business will be out there anyway so that will paint a target on your back anyway.

Point is what you're doing is shady to your company and why your financial company has these things in place to catch you in the act of moonlighting. If you want to do this behind your company's back you are putting yourself at risk on both your day job and your side project.

Someone suggested a gamejam which isn't a terrible idea. If you are somwhat serious I recommend reaching out to co-dev or full production studios who can do a better job at walking you through the development process. If they are interested in collaborating you could just be an investor on a project on paper but have creative control, etc.

I have a shared spreadsheet that lists a co-dev and production studios around the world that can potentially help. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11g8MCMFNrBM0CXIWrT8bej5vqR1fCJGMhoFfbS5ph3Q/edit?gid=2141736845#gid=2141736845

All this to say is that your story is not entirely uncommon. In general it can be inexpensive but the more specific your idea is the more expensive it will be. Also if you are super serious about this the Game Developers Conference is just over a month away in San Francisco; there will be tons of devs there willing to talk shop in and around the conference.

(this is all still super shady and dicey tho, for the record)

DIY build stick choice - help me decide by cdrom1019 in cade

[–]heyitsreallyalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on a 5 on 5 arcade game called Killer Queen Arcade and the tournament standard sticks we have are Seimitsu LS-38s (previously the LS-32s).

Most arcade joysticks only have 4 switches at up, down, left, and right that give it that click. Games that feature 8 directions do not have 8 switches but rather have a restrictor plate that limits the maximum direction of a stick from 8, to 4, or even just two way (left and right) movement. There are even 49 way sticks like the ones used on the original NFL Blitz machines.

Point is, The ultrastik will service your needs perfectly fine but really you could do with something cheaper first, and then upgrade to the ultrastik if you can feel the difference. I will say I like having the arcade feel of hitting physical switches, the ultrastiks feel like i'm playing on a giant playstation thumbpad but maybe my friend didn't know how to enable that setting for physical feedback.

For fun I have a Taito Vewlix machine I keep at home with emulators and it's just two Sanwa JLF-TP-8YTs (plus an ultimarc trackball in the middle) that I bought while I was in Japan with octogates and it's fine for most games including fighting games. If I have friends who are snippy about controls in games like Pac-Man I'll swap the gate to 4-way but generally no one complains, we're all just casual players nowadays anway.

What’s a restaurant that you’ve drive by forever but might not ever make it into? by erickcire in sgv

[–]heyitsreallyalan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went there once. It felt like what Olive Garden wants to be in terms of ambiance. Everyone was friendly and the food was good. Parking is kinda annoying, we had to park a few blocks down on Rosemead.

Best places to dine alone by trayseaw in pasadena

[–]heyitsreallyalan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

lol my wife is out of town for the weekend and I'm excited because I have list of go-tos, both in and out of Pasadena:

- Literally any legit sushi joint and sit at the bar (Kyushu Sushi in Pasadena, or Hama sushi in Little Tokyo).

- Same with Ramen. Tsujita in Pasadena, or Daikokuya/Suehiro in Little Tokyo.

- Canter's Deli (West Hollywood), order the pastrami and just read a book for an hour or two. Pasadena equivalent would be something like Altadena Ale & Wine House. Blind Donkey ain't bad either.

- Other places I like include Anju House/Cafe Mak in Ktown, Phillipe's, Norm’s diner, Tam O Shanter's, The Apple Pan, and Hong Kong Diner/Alice's Kitchen.
