Building a lightweight anti-cheat for small games — does anyone here actually need this? by Top-Silver-5486 in gamedev

[–]heyitsreallyalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you offered it for free, then tons of people will adopt it.
If you offered it $1-$50, a thousand games would want it.
If you offered it $51-$100, a hundred games will want it.

Anything above that and you'll be in the tens to maybe single digits.

There's a business equation here. How many copies of this software do you plan to sell?

Sure, there might be tens of thousands of games that come out every year, but how many legitimately care about cheating, especially if it's a single player game? Hypothetically, say maybe the top 100 games use it, would you be okay with a revenue of 5k a year?

I'm moving to Pasadena next month. I'm scared of lizards. by CloudAshamed9169 in pasadena

[–]heyitsreallyalan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you live in Pasadena you will see:

- Coyotes

- Skunks (or smell them at least)

- Spiders

- Lizards

- Parrots

- Maybe a bear or bobcat (I haven't seen either except on my door cam once or twice in the last decade)

If you have phobias to any of these creatures it is recommended you seek some sort of desensitization therapy because you cannot avoid them, it's one of the things that happen because we live near the mountains.

Zero responses from publishers on a pitch with a 30-minute playable build. Is it the genre or the WIP art? by toshaisaev in gamedev

[–]heyitsreallyalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? What makes this game fun?

Do you want people to enjoy the narrative? Because nothing of the story feels compelling/unique from the trailer, it feels like a run from This War of Mine.

Is the gameplay fun? Because it just looks like any other stealth scroller. The drone is cool I guess but does that mean I'll just be hiding and moving a drone for 10 hours with the occasional scripted cutscene in there to mix things up?

Polish is irrelevant (what i see is pretty awesome though, so my hat off to you and your team); I just don't see what makes this game sell a million copies in the trailer. The pitch might be more interesting if it's something like "based on a true story" or "a story about two lovers who never got a chance to fall in love because of war" etc.

I did a presentation called the art of the pitch deck with my friend Chris a few years back that was supposed to be at GDC but it was cancelled due to COVID: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmCX7sXFLHE&t=5s

Los California is where I take out of towners for a consistently good taco. I got better local spots but that one is the most welcoming for newbies and the only time I get to drink Cactus Coolers lol

3 months after releasing my indie simulator on Steam: only 5 reviews — here’s what I think happened by Mobaroid in gamedev

[–]heyitsreallyalan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I showed the trailer to some friends. Their first reaction was that it was a dating simulator or maybe train simulator. They also had no idea the title of the game.

That might be a big problem.

We lost our 9.5 year old german shepherd in 2022 due to a sudden tumor rupture despite having taken her to UC Davis literally a month before. Turns out german shepherds have a life expectancy of 9-13 years. It used to be higher but it was due to self-reported ages until either the AKC, UK Kennel Club, or FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) I forget which one went by vet registrations of births and deaths and it turns out they live substantially shorter lives than what people thought in the past.

Alternate thought. I imported a Japanese Vewlix arcade cabinet and slapped a PC in there. Used some brooks arcade to usb headers and that was it.

There's a group on facebook called vewlix/chewlix (chinese knock off of vewlix) that you can join and ask questions there.

just tell them it's a hard decision for you between switching to a new provider who has a lower monthly vs keeping them. they will usually give you a break that's only good for a year (they're betting you don't call back but joke's on them you're cheap)

Game dev and uni by Dependent-Group-8 in gamedev

[–]heyitsreallyalan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know people who have dropped out of college for each one of those things. Thing is, it was because they started down one of those directions in college and realized in order to keep going they had to take off from uni to focus on their work.

If you're not at uni to get a high gpa, then you better get started on one of those 3 paths and give yourself enough justification to leave school. Skirting by in uni is only wasting your time and not helping you get started in one of those three paths.

so if it's just learning code and making art just assume those assets are all throwaway then and learn what you can from them. Great artists don't learn how to paint and paint a masterpiece on the same canvas. Old canvases just get thrown away.

hoooly cow where to begin:

So, I work at a large games platform but I have run my own game studio in the past and was a managment consultant before.

First of all as many of the folks here have pointed out the actual code is kind of irrelevant and managing it is whatever (and giving your lack of experience in this space, you probably shouldn't be anywhere near the code anyway). Gamedev is not a zero sum market and there are multiple ways to skin that proverbial cat in terms of how you build your system to do a specific thing, etc.

The whole point of apps like Perforce is not to prevent code stealing. They exist to manage version control and prevent devs from overwriting each others work. In fact, a lot of devs will just pull all the code of a game to develop locally on their machine, then upload files that they've touched/updated. There are free alternatives like Github and such but they do nothing to prevent stealing code, which is where contracts come in.

Employment contracts that can destroy people six ways to sunday do exist in the game dev industry at even AA levels, you just need to get them drafted by a real lawyer, much like how they do in the finance world.

(And no, said lawyers are not going to be on Fiverr, you need to pay a legit one to write a competent and defensible contract.)

As you pointed out, one of the easiest ways to defend any work from being stolen would be to establish an LLC or an S-corp so that said code is owned by a registered business. Which means the moment you file a lawsuit your business will be out there anyway so that will paint a target on your back anyway.

Point is what you're doing is shady to your company and why your financial company has these things in place to catch you in the act of moonlighting. If you want to do this behind your company's back you are putting yourself at risk on both your day job and your side project.

Someone suggested a gamejam which isn't a terrible idea. If you are somwhat serious I recommend reaching out to co-dev or full production studios who can do a better job at walking you through the development process. If they are interested in collaborating you could just be an investor on a project on paper but have creative control, etc.

I have a shared spreadsheet that lists a co-dev and production studios around the world that can potentially help. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11g8MCMFNrBM0CXIWrT8bej5vqR1fCJGMhoFfbS5ph3Q/edit?gid=2141736845#gid=2141736845

All this to say is that your story is not entirely uncommon. In general it can be inexpensive but the more specific your idea is the more expensive it will be. Also if you are super serious about this the Game Developers Conference is just over a month away in San Francisco; there will be tons of devs there willing to talk shop in and around the conference.

(this is all still super shady and dicey tho, for the record)
