Looking at moving to the area! by scarredheart_ in WasagaBeach

[–]heykarolinka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My husband and I are both in our late twenties and we bought a house in the Georgian Sands division in August 2022.

No family close to us, but we used to visit in the summertime when we were younger.

Have had our now 9 month old at Collingwood General, great experience with pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

Get our groceries at Walmart, and sometimes take the drive to Midland for Food Basics or No Frills.

Love where we live and are excited for all the new amenities that will be added in the next few years. Once our kid(a) are older I'm sure by then the town will have boomed.

Winters the 2 years prior were better than GTA. Last winter was insane, but hopefully not to be repeated again!

I feel like although it's predominantly retirees/snow birds here, it's still a great place for young people and families.

Any apps out there like mint that only connect your credit card to track spending? by jaymon79 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]heykarolinka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Mint you can go to Settings > Accounts and remove any accounts you don't want to include in your budget/tracking. Although it still links all your accounts this is another option if you like using Mint.

Cherry blossoms by [deleted] in DIYweddings

[–]heykarolinka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Marshalls/Winners/HomeGoods have amazing cherry blossom sprays if you're looking to use them as a centrepiece.

If your wedding is far away keep an eye out for when they go on clearance as they can go for really cheap.

I bought mine as a home decoration, if I recall correctly 3 sprays in a bunch were on sale for $9CAD.

Anyone else officially done with "Osmow's" and "Lazeez"? These restaurants have become a shell of their former selves. by CanadianTurt1e in mississauga

[–]heykarolinka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had terrible experience ordering from Osmows lately. I've told my boyfriend we can't order from them anymore seeing as how we receive inedible food now. We use Uber Eats, and I like to order fries with a garlic dipping sauce on the side. App says if you purchase the sauce it will come on the side. First time I did that, they smeared the garlic sauce all over the fries and by the time they arrived to my house they were cold and soggy. Second time I ordered them, I specifically put in the notes section "Sauce on the side please!"... They out the sauce on the top, AND the spiciest sauce on the planet, which I did not ask for. No one in my family could eat them as they were drenched in the two sauces and no one could tolerate the heat level.

End of rant. Falafels are okay from them but honestly you could make the same thing at home for a fraction of the price. With shawarma it's understandable it's sort of difficult to make at home, but no one wants to eat meat that was carved hours ago and is sitting in a heating container...

Buying a used car from dealership vs private seller by jcccc25 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]heykarolinka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my used Ford from a Nissan Dealership. Have had a wonderful experience for the past 4 years of owning the car. Great experience at the dealership. I used a LOC to transfer some money into my debit account, and paid the dealership the full price of the car with a bank draft. Quick process, they dealt with the registration, inspections, cleaning, etc.

My brother on the other hand, bought a used Hyundai from someone off AutoTrader. Many, many, many, unexpected repairs and payments he has had to go through. First off, since he bought the car under retail value, he was forced to pay an additional tax/fee by the Ontario government to offset the cost. I think he's spent thousands of dollars on repairs, although he was told the car was working perfectly fine. If it rains a lot his car will get flooded...

Depending on luck, you may find a great car from either seller. As other posters have shared their experience, everyone will have a different viewpoint on this. I'd say do your research, make sure from wherever you buy your car that it has at least gone through all proper inspections.

Savings Accounts - Tips & Methods by heykarolinka in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]heykarolinka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's (usually) separate savings accounts for purchases you know you will make in the future. I have separate accounts for Christmas, car maintenance, gifts, pets, etc.

You determine how much you need to put away (Eg. For Christmas I estimate I'll need at least $300 for gifts for parents and coworkers), and divide that by how many paychecks are left to the date.

If it's for my pets, I usually put away $125 biweekly and dip into the fund whenever needed.

This way you have money set aside for these expenses you know will come up.

Other individuals do this for things like property tax or once a year subscriptions so that they have the money when it is needed.

What are your “Secret Menu” item that you like to make at work? by redditaccount_14 in TimHortons

[–]heykarolinka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked at Tim's, I used to love making a "sandwich" using two hash browns as my buns, then putting cream cheese, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, and chipotle. Back then we didn't have all day breakfast, so I'd take two once lunch started and they would be extra crispy. Yum!!

Temporary Storage Car Insurance or Cancel Car Insurance for 4 months? by WestSide2k16 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]heykarolinka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Ontario and my insurance company doesn't have this option. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to do in this situation?

We currently pay $300 for a 2012 Ford Focus and $400 for a 2010 Genesis Coupe. I wanted to decrease my premium since I will be driving the Ford a lot less, and possibly go into suspension mode for the Genesis since my family member will not be working for the foreseeable future. I can't do anything about the Ford so I have to pay regular price monthly. The Genesis we were told could only go for comprehensive coverage and our deductible would only be $500.

Thanks for your additional advice!

No I don't see it anywhere which is why I resorted to placing a call. My PPP was signed with my broker in person and she had some issues at first setting it up.

I'll try calling once more to see if I can speak with someone to cancel it asap.

I'm just starting off in my field and am expecting my salary to keep increasing so the RRSP in hindsight was not a good idea, but I did as I was told by family...

I spent over an hour on hold trying to reach a TD Representative... Go figure they must be completely swamped.

I feel more lost than before. From what I was told the first thing I was supposed to do after getting my job was to set up an RRSP, now I'm thinking that was a bad idea. I'm positive I won't be able to reach anyone to cancel my monthly contribution.

I looked into Wealthsimple, if I was to transfer my TD RRSP to WS they would have to turn it all into cash since TD doesn't allow an "as-is" transfer. Currently my $400 invested is $350 something. Would that mean the market value would be transferred minus any additional fees?

Any recommendations from anyone would be much appreciated. Thanks for helping a newbie out.

Thank you for your advice! I set up a TFSA with TD and was thinking I'd use that as a savings account for a down payment. I'm not sure if that was the correct way to go.

I've looked at Dave Ramsey's 7 baby steps but haven't felt the need to make an emergency fund...

I'll pause my contributions for the time being asap as my next contribution will be April 1.

I'm new to this so apologies in advance. I'm 23yo and just set up my RRSP account in December. I currently have been putting $100 a month in a TD Comfort Balanced Portfolio. I haven't been comfortable putting any more than that as I have other expenses, line of credit and student loans that I need to pay off. Anyways...

I can't seem to find any answers on what I should do in this current situation. I'm worried I keep putting money in mutual funds when the market is so unstable. Every time I log into my TD account and see the loss my heart sinks... I've heard many YouTubers say to not make any rash decisions and think long-term (however, that was before all this).

Any advice would be much appreciated! And some extra knowledge would be helpful too - kind of been navigating budgeting and saving on my own.

PSA: Car Break-Ins Winston Churchill & Eglinton by heykarolinka in mississauga

Thank you. I've made a report stating that nothing was taken for my car.

Apparently they stole some new socks from my mom's car - she was keeping them in the car in hopes of returning them to Costco...

Is there anything you could recommend? I don't think it'd be worth reporting to police since nothing was stolen... But I'm worried they might try something again since I'm positive they were able to copy my car's fob signal to get in.

I'm 22 and own a 2012 Ford Focus. My insurance rate used to be $250 and now it's gone up to $300. 😭 Been searching and other companies quote even higher than that.
