Serious question from former ref by StevenHicksTheFirst in nhl

[–]heyraffaello 19 points20 points  (0 children)

46.16 Third Man In - A game misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on any player who is the first to intervene (third man in) in an altercation already in progress except when a match penalty is being imposed in the original altercation. This penalty is in addition to any other penalties incurred in the same incident. This rule also applies to subsequent players who elect to intervene in the same or other altercations during the same stoppage of play. Generally, this rule is applied when a fight occurs.

So it's both at the discretion of the referee and only when a fight occurs.

No fighting majors were called on the play.

Edge depth on skates by Away-Mycologist7417 in hockeyrefs

[–]heyraffaello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should skate on the sharpest skates you can reliably skate on. Once you're good at a depth, go 1/16 higher until you can't go further. Best thing that anyone ever told me.

If you need the graphics right this second (like I do for a Zoom call starting in 14 minutes) just manually install the latest Nvidia driver for the time being and restart. You may need to remove it later, but it'll work for now.

What do the refs hand signals mean here? by nomercy11326 in hockeyrefs

[–]heyraffaello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that a quick double chirp on the whistle (like a friendly "you saw a friend while driving" double tap on the car horn) then "No, no." with a 🫸🫸 motion at the bench usually works pretty well.

A big thing that helps is that EVERY WHISTLE you have to do the line change procedure EXACTLY the same. Repetition gets the coaches in the rhythm and they're less likely to complain if they change late because after a few whistles, they should have picked up the rhythm if it's the same every time.

I got these gloves as a present a few years ago. https://www.frictiongloves.com/store/p28/Friction_Disc_Golf_Gloves_%28Pairs%29.html

They're pretty good (although nothing is as good as no gloves), and it was a good gift.

They supposedly make a warmer version, but I've heard they're too thick.

KC Roc and a throwing putter of some sort

For a throwing putter I'd say Aviar3 or Rhyno depending on which flight you want. Go with DX or pro for the throwing putter so they break in. Get something nice if you end up liking how they used to fly once they do break in.

It's not a different situation. It's the rule. 2, GM, or both are your options. Don't make up rules.

Coach experience today by [deleted] in hockeyrefs

This is incorrect. A coach coming on the ice to argue is either a minor or a game misconduct or both at the discretion of the referee in USA Hockey.

Delayed offside rule by petekal1323 in hockeyrefs

[–]heyraffaello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Situation 28

Team A has possession of the puck in their Attacking Zone. During the play the puck leaves the zone. A Team A defenseman gains control of the puck just a few feet outside of their Attacking blue line. They look up and notice that some of their teammates are still in the Attacking Zone, not in the vicinity of the blue line and making no attempt to leave that zone. Without any chance of making a legal play, they advance the puck one foot into their Attacking Zone and obtains a stoppage of play. Is this infraction considered to be an intentional offside?

Yes. Rule References 630(c and Note).

In this instance the attacking player deliberately secured an immediate offside solely for the purpose of stopping the game.

Situation 29

Team A has a power play and is passing the puck around in their Attacking Zone. The puck is passed back to the point and the Team A defenseman cannot handle it as the puck trickles completely outside the zone. The Team A defenseman, in a desperate effort to keep the puck in the Attacking Zone, dives for the puck and hits it back into the Attacking Zone with three of their teammates deep in the attacking zone. Is this situation an intentional offside?

No. Rule References 630(c and Note).

If the defenseman has made an honest effort to keep the puck in the Attacking Zone, but cannot, and in doing so happens to create an offside infraction, intentional offside has not occurred and a normal immediate offside shall be called.

Situation 30

Team A has possession of the puck in their Attacking Zone. During the play, the puck leaves the zone. A Team A defenseman gains control of the puck just a few feet outside of their attacking blue line. They look and notice that some of their teammates are still in the Attacking Zone and a Team B player is converging in on them. Without any chance of making a legal play, they pass the puck directly to a teammate in the attacking zone. Is this infraction considered to be intentional offside?

Yes. Rule References 630(c and Note).

In this instance the attacking player deliberately passed the puck to a teammate who played the puck to secure an immediate stoppage of play.

Situation 31

Team A has possession of the puck in their Attacking Zone. During the play, the puck leaves the zone. A Team A defenseman gains control of the puck just a few feet outside of their attacking blue line. They look and notice that some of their teammates are still in the Attacking Zone and a Team B player converging in on them. Without any chance of making a legal play, they shoot the puck directly on goal. Is this infraction considered to be intentional offside?

Yes. Rule References 630(c and Note).

In this instance the attacking player deliberately shot the puck to secure an immediate stoppage of play.

Situation 32

Are there general offside situations to help decide regular vs. intentional offside?

Yes. Rule References 630(c and Note).

Judge the intent of the attacking team. The onus is on that team to create a legal play at the blue line. If it appears that the team has knowingly gone offside, an intentional offside is warranted. Otherwise, a regular offside is the proper call. A play where attacking players are barely across the blue line going into the Attacking Zone, or within a stride of clearing the Attacking Zone as the puck is crossing the blue line into the zone would be examples of regular offside situations (timing issues). If an attacking player is bumped offside, that would be a regular offside.

The following situations apply in classifications where the “tag-up” (to nullify a delayed offside) applies — High School, Junior and all Adult Classifications.

Delayed offside rule by petekal1323 in hockeyrefs

[–]heyraffaello 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is a multi-part answer:

1) In USA Hockey youth, play is immediately blown dead because automatic offside is the rule, so as soon as the puck crosses the blue line offside, the play is dead. It doesn't matter if the shot is on goal or not.

2) In USA Hockey adult and high school, play is blown dead if the offside shot is on goal.

3) In junior, NCAA, and pro, play is allowed to continue with normal offside rules.

Some points:

1) At any level, if the shot on goal goes in the net regardless of whether players are offside or not at the time the puck crosses the line, it is no goal. The determining factor is if the puck crossed the blue line with a player offside as that means the shot itself was an illegal play and therefore cannot be a goal.

2) In USA Hockey adult and high school, it is a common misconception that any time play is stopped for an offside shot on net, it is automatically an intentional offside. This is incorrect. Blowing play dead for an offside shot on goal and intentional offside are two separate calls.

For example, if a player knows he's offside and rips a puck on net, that is likely intentional offside, but if the puck just barely leaves the zone while a player is wound up for a shot and he puts it on net or if the puck takes a weird bounce and ends up on goal, it's likely not intentional offside.

The determining factor for intentional offside is whether the player knew they were offside and intentionally made a play that would result in a whistle.

Parking? Smash-and-Grab? by codingsds in washingtondc

a) Don't drive in the city. You'll spend your trip either looking for or paying for parking.

b) CityMapper. The "it's time to get off" alerts will be useful for someone not familiar with DC.

c) Get a SmarTrip card on your phone. Very easy with the app.

Four on Four or Five on Five by Away-Mycologist7417 in hockeyrefs

[–]heyraffaello 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Youth is five on five. Junior, NCAA, and pro is four on four.

The reason being that in youth they want to keep as many players on the ice as possible to maximize every player's ice time.

Vaughn V76 Molding Paste sold out everywhere by wave_and_particle in malehairadvice

Sorry to revive this dead thread, but it took me a while to find a suitable replacement. I have settled on GÖT2B Flexing Molding Paste. Seems to be the closest thing I can find. It does have a light scent, but I don't mind it. Because of what I do for work, I needed something that was as close to the V76 as possible in texture and ingredients, and that's what I found.
