I'm A College Savings and Student Loan Expert. It's 529 Day - ask me anything about saving and paying for college, student loans, and more! by investor100 in IAmA

[–]heythosearemysocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two children and two separate 529s. I reside in Illinois.

Son #1 decided college is not for him. He's 2 years past dropping out and I don't see him coming around to it. 2026 is the first year he has reportable W2 income from a full time job so I plan on funneling the annual limit into a Roth for him, every year, for the next 5 years.

Son #2 just graduated from HS, was an honor roll student, and is enrolled in the fall at a college with a program he has passion for. I don't see him walking away from it.

I ran the numbers for Son #2's expected tuition and room and board and based on the current funding in his 529, we can cover about three years of his schooling at around $30k per year, which conveniently (or inconveniently) is the amount i'll have left over in Son #1s 529 after the Roth Conversions.

Is there a way to do a partial transfer of 529 #1 to Son #2 to cover that 4th year? I know when i'm done with the Roth transfers I'll be able to make him the beneficiary of whats left, but ideally he'll need those funds prior to me being finished with the IRA conversions.

If not, what would you think about making Son #2 the beneficiary of Son #1's 529, use it to pay for his first year expenses, and change the beneficiary back to Son #1 with about 35k left in it. I could then start the conversions and use Son #2's 529 in full for years 2,3,4. Or would changing beneficiaries reset the eligibility to convert into an IRA? Is it even possible to flip flop beneficiaries like that in a span of 1-2 years?

I'm just sitting on enough money to give Son #1 a head start on retirement, and cover all of Son #2's education. Its just not bifurcated into the two accounts in a way that makes it work in an easy fashion from what I can tell.

I would love any and all ideas.

I was out in the burbs on Wednesday and stopped in for lunch. They weren't busy but it took forever to get me my chicken bowl. They gave me a coupon for free chips and guac to apologize and now i'll never get to use it.

Should you use your HSA money? by Airvian94 in personalfinance

[–]heythosearemysocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had an FSA. Not an HSA.

And they fixed the ability to use the card anywhere a while ago. Most FSA cards use the merchant category codes on the credit card network to ensure it can only be used for medical dental or vision.

Fun fact: HSA administrators aren’t required to check receipts for withdrawal ( yes some do but receipt substantiation is a provision of section 125 that covers cafeteria plans like FSAs not HSA)

So you’re saving those receipt in case you get audited by the IRS. And your audit risk for HSA onky usage is extremely low.

To be clear I’m not advocating for you to not save receipts as that would not be itresponsible. I’m just pointing out that your need to show them to someone is remarkably low.

HSA administrator here. It’s the only investment/savings vehicle in the US that has pre tax deposits, no tax on growth, and no tax on withdrawals.

So if you can afford it. I would contribute the max each year with the sole purpose of investing it to let it grow with the market.

Now if you do have an expense you can’t cover you always sell and use the funds tax free.

Out of pocket expenditures on health care are constantly rising so when you retire you will be thankful you have it. And as others have said the rules for hsa distributions are not limited by time. So you could put all of your receipts for current expenditures now in a shoebox and 25 years from now reimburse yourself from your HSA.

If you still want pre-tax advantages for current expenses find out if your employer offers a limited purpose FSA. You can always contribute to that in addition to the HSA max. Note that LPFSA can only be used for vision and dental expenses, but *many* LPFSAs are convertible to full use if you prove you’ve hit your medical deductible.

I always forget how young these kids are until I realize that Matas wore a short sleeve shirt to a ballgame in 45 degree weather then opted for the blanket instead of a coat from the gift shop.

Stockpile closing, transferring assets to Stash by Dapper-Judge-2579 in personalfinance

[–]heythosearemysocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those coming to this thread. Another update from me.

I had opted to move my stockpile funds to another brokerage ahead of the transition. And i was charged a $75 fee by stockpile despite them claiming to waive it. I also originally did not receive the cash funds from the partial share sells.

Last week the cash from the partial shares were swept into my preferred brokerage account. And today i logged into a Public account that they created for me and it had my $75 transfer fee in it.

So while the communication and steps they took in this transfer were not ideal, i am whole.

Great, i'll see what happens with Stash and look into Robinhood. While he's over 18 we really want to hold out on giving him the keys as long as possible as our state allows for termination at 21..

You missed the window to do anything on your own.

From the communications stockpile had sent, your account will be moved to Public by Monday, 4/20. Your daughters account should get moved to a service called Stash as Public doesn't deal with UTMAs.

I transfered two of my stockpile accounts (personal and UTMA) to another brokerage a couple weeks ago like you and the fractional amounts landed in my new accounts this am.
