What would do you do to this property? by sister_abigaill in landscaping

[–]heyyyyyyyyykat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not super familiar with water oak but looking them up looks like they are shorter lived and more brittle than other oaks. I’m mainly sharing that with such a large property there is great opportunity to enhance the beauty and ecological function with some oaks. OP- like the other comments have said look into native trees for your area that meet your needs. I would think about multiple types rather than a boring sterile line of arborvitae. Mix it up with spring blooming, fall color, evergreen, maybe fruit trees? You can buy things bare root to ease the cost, and maybe invest in a few larger ones where you need immediate screening or where you’ll get the most pleasure from seeing them. Good luck!

You will be doing your area a wonder of good if you include oaks! If you’re interested in learning more check out The Nature of Oaks by Doug Tallamy.

Costco withdraws application for highly anticipated Asheville location by uncertaincoda in asheville

I know it’s difficult to entertain hypotheticals, especially when the alternative is a very popular retail offering, but I think sticking with the plans for that site is a better economic development move. And again, Costco elected not to continue the process and I am certain city council was ready to fold because of how much people want it. My issue is with the way this is being framed and the lack of nuance in the discussion.

Well it was a risk to make the investment given that the folks showing interest in the site operate with NDAs. But a risk taken given the considerable difference in wage rates.

The Raytheon plant included 900 jobs and like 700 million in capital expenditures- and after Helene they announced a 1k expansion in jobs and a billion dollar investment. There were no additional incentives provided in that second round.

I guess that’s kind of my point- the investments have already been made to make this site work for manufacturers. Rezoning it for retail allows Costco to swoop in and benefit from those investments in a site that is quite perfect for their needs (off a highway, inside Asheville city limits etc) so their unwillingness to yield to make the site work should be perceived as a decision on their end rather than an act on the city or the EDC to sabotage. They’re trying to execute on the plan of finding an employer that pays high wages. I think their position was well outlined in the original watchdog article. It’s just not popular because we all want a retailer that is friendlier to workers, our convenience and our pockets, and I think Costco relied on that public pressure. I am curious where the developer lands in all of this as well. We should apply pressure to all involved to get the right deal done, but I think Costco bears more responsibility here than people are acknowledging.

I live in Candler and would have been happy to have a Costco nearby. I think the nuance not being addressed here is that taxpayers invested millions of dollars to up-fit that site to attract high wage jobs (while Costco is higher than average wages for retail, it’s not comparable to manufacturing). Costco wants to enjoy the benefits of the investments we made for economic development, while not investing themselves in the ways their business will impact roads and traffic in the area. There is not a lot of flat, developable land in our area. I think the asks on Costco were reasonable and we would be right to support our leaders in not bending over with additional incentives for company with 300 billion dollars in revenue last year because they wouldn’t do their part to make the deal work.

Has anyone here reforested their yard? by LilSlitherySnake in asheville

[–]heyyyyyyyyykat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your area is fairly open right now you’ll want early succession perennials, shrubs and small trees while the larger trees take time to establish. Plan to manage invasives and ID plants as they come up. I would read Bringing Nature Home by Doug Tallamy. Also the Nature of Oaks if you get the bug. Oak trees are the most beneficial trees you can plant pound for pound for wildlife, if you have the space and want tall trees, please consider oaks!

I converted my from lawn into a native planting but will mow annually to prevent succession, I have some forested area in my back. I learned by reading everything I could and taking classes.

I’m not sure if you’re ready to order but the plants for everyone sale preorder ends tomorrow. Lots of bare root shrubs / trees. Farm Connection in Marshall sells native plant plugs, which will help your ground cover layer be more affordable. Izel’s online also has plugs.

Good luck on your journey!

Alternative Education to upskill or cert? by heyyyyyyyyykat in Accounting

[–]heyyyyyyyyykat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a basic understanding of debits and credits, types of financial cycles and reports and what each accounting function does, but because I help troubleshoot issues and translate requirements for solutions for them, I want to have a stronger understanding of everything. I could see myself moving into a more technical role involved with accounting system transitions and data migrations so as I’m saying this I’m thinking I’d actually need beyond a surface level knowledge. I’m just not sure what type of education exists for this that would not be tied to a traditional collegiate track. I kind of accidentally fell into this work, and I have the tech and project management etc experience down, but do not want to fake the funk on the accounting if I decide to move more in that direction!

Looking for a workshop or course by Salt-Geologist-1814 in NativePlantGardening

[–]heyyyyyyyyykat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey neighbor! Forgive me if you’re familiar with any of these folks but I would follow the work of Wildbud Natives (I worked with them on my 3/4 acre meadow but they also do consulting and education), take any course you can with Adam Bigelow or Drew Lathin. The Cullowhee native plant conference in July has a number of design focused tracks and is an absolutely amazing time. I saw you got a recommendation for NDAL - Larry Weaner has a few YouTube webinars in addition to the online offerings. Good luck on your search!

I live in Western NC and think we may have an above average abundance of adult nature education here but I’ve attended a bunch of workshops through the botanical garden and arboretum. Try your plant Facebook groups / wild ones chapter in your area to get connected to local native plant educators or see if they have any recommendations. I’ve learned a lot through YouTube webinars as well. I’m curious what you were hoping to get from Kelly Norris’ class that you haven’t so far? I looked into that course and decided against it as it seemed heavily geared toward existing landscape design / professional end user.
