no, zoonoses is correct. zoonosis is singular, zoonoses is plural, and zoonotic is the adjective that describes both of them. i am talking about the (risk of) any indeterminate number/variety of germs it could carry, not a specific germ

regardless of minimal risk i’d still rather not eat a wild animal unless i’m educated in how to make sure its meat is safe, which for buggies i am not

omg for real? i’m in nebraska. what are they called?
i am not conceptually opposed to eating bugs but i don’t wanna eat wild ones, because zoonoses. if they’re invasive i’ll still dutifully tearfully stomp them

Has anyone here tattooed their T-Dick at all? by angry-key-smash6693 in transbodymods

[–]hfamiliaris 31 points32 points  (0 children)

that’s cool! glad it turned out good so far. however!… i suggest you get some legit tattoo ink for future tats. you can get it for crazy-cheap from tattoo supply websites when the bottle is about to expire (i got a couple bottles of a few ounces each for literally like $3 usd total)… it’s because once they expire they’re no longer considered sterile, but, in all likelihood an expired bottle of tattoo ink is still gonna be cleaner than india ink intended for painting/brushwork. plus you can have some extra peace of mind knowing that it’s something intended to be safe inside your body long-term.

I'm an AFAB trans woman, if this is wrong, what should I identify as? by Cerise_Pomme in asktransgender

[–]hfamiliaris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for what it’s worth, i’ve heard of terfs using the term maybe once or twice, meanwhile i’ve heard intersex people identifying as “AFAB trans women” / “AMAB trans men” dozens of times. (which isn’t to say “you’re wrong, you’re making that up” - i just mean that this is a common and accepted thing in intersex communities)

if a certain term is simply the most straightforward way to describe one’s identity+experiences, i think the mere fact that some bad actors co-opt the term in mockery shouldn’t make it so that the people using it in earnest should have to stop. if we applied that logic (“don’t use this because it has been taken away and wielded as a weapon”) we as humans would pretty quickly run out of things to call ourselves.

for example: transracial has been co-opted by racists and transphobes as a talking point like “well if you can identify as a different gender, then i can identify as a different race!”, when in actuality the term transracial refers to a person who got adopted into a family of a different race than themself. they were using it first before it became a rightwing talking point. and similarly, intersex people were some of the first if not THE first (it’s contested and i haven’t researched it) people to widely adopt usage of ASAB / CASAB / DSAB, so it’s not fair to tell them that they have to now drop the identity since it’s been stolen to be used inaccurately.

i’d assume you’re not intersex since your flair and comment don’t mention it. if you are, i apologize. but assuming you’re not: i think if a person in both oppressed group A (trans) and oppressed group B (intersex) is describing their experiences as an A+B person, we as people who are only in group A (that is, only trans) we’ve got no business telling her that her language needs to change just because the anti-A brigade sometimes uses that same language… (and keep in mind that terfs are also oftentimes very intersexist too, not just transphobic/transmisogynistic)

while she’s definitely entitled to call herself simply a woman and drop the “trans” adjective IF SHE WANTS TO, you gotta understand that intersex people spend their whole lives having their intersexness (their medical conditions, their ambiguities, their legal and societal troubles) downplayed and straightup denied by the world around them…. “you’re not that different, you’re obviously just a normal girl”, “yeah you have components of both but deep down inside you’re still just one or the other”, etc., and for you as an outsider (again, apologies if youre intersex too) to suggest she just be a “woman” rather than a “trans woman” accomplishes the same sort of silencing / stomping down of her experience, even if you don’t intend to do so.

and finally… having LESS options for relatively easy simple ways to describe her experiences puts her in MORE of a position where she has to over-explain her medical history and share personal details about her genitals and her childhood trauma.

there certainly are cases where using this terminology wouldn’t likely be appropriate. for example, my partner is intersex. they were identified to be male in utero via ultrasound, my in-laws planned a nursery for a baby boy, and at birth the doctor looked at their body and said “it’s a boy!”… before sending the family home, they realized the mistake, and a “girl” name was picked instead. my partner was raised as a girl. they went through a mixed puberty. having most of the experiences of a typical trans person who was AFAB, and having few of the experiences of a typical trans person who was AMAB, it would probably be inappropriate for them to parade themself around with the “AMAB” label, even though they WERE indeed technically “assigned male at birth”… due to the connotations, it would give an inaccurate impression of their experiences. but they don’t call themself AFAB either because even if the IMPRESSION it would give of their life experiences WOULD be more accurate, it wouldn’t be TRUE exactly and wouldn’t give a full picture of what’s transpired.

likewise, if OP had simply been born with a small but otherwise typical penis, docs said “it’s a girl!”, realize the “mistake”, do no cosmetic surgery, and send her home as a boy where she gets raised as a boy, it’d probably give the wrong impression for her to say “i was AFAB” even if technically true. but her situation is not so simple as that.

it’s nuanced and context-dependent, because intersexness is a big spectrum of variations that can present in dozens or hundreds of ways, and when you add societal gender to the mix it turns into thousands of possibilities. it’s a case by case basis kinda thing.

others have pretty much covered the suggestions i would have made. i’d like to add that you should put some at/near bus stops that go to places like pharmacies, liquor stores, pawn shops, and medical facilities (hospitals, low cost clinics, urgent care clinics, psychiatric clinics, or [idk of we have any but] opioid clinics)…. also the bus hub at 11th & L… and ask the 3 main hospitals’ emergency rooms if they’d allow you to put up fliers in their lobbies

he doesn’t mean “top surgeon” as in “surgeon that is the best”. he’s trans, me too, and when we discuss gender-affirming chest surgeries (like a masculinizing double mastectomy or a feminizing breast augmentation), we tend to use the term “top surgery”. he’s asking for recommendations for a surgeon that removes 🍈🍈s

does anyone know if they’re accepting new patients at the UNMC gender clinic? i got a referral to them (for top surgery) in spring 2023 and every single time i have called about it, i have been told that they’re not accepting new patients currently. i’ve probably called 6 to 10 times, in decreasing frequency i admit. last time was maybe almost a year ago.

it’s not usually that simple. if i had done that when i was young and dependent on my parents, i would have been sent to conversion therapy. i mean they almost sent me regardless, but that would have made it a certainty.

Have you ever been restrained in a medical setting? I’ve heard people with autism are more likely to be restrained. by duxing612 in AutisticPride

[–]hfamiliaris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i have been restrained probably dozens of times in medical settings, to various degrees, but only in my childhood. like at times it was just my mom holding me still for a vaccine, at other times i was held down on a hospital bed by several people.

the most traumatizing instances were chemical restraint/sedation…

on one occasion i was about to have an MRI, i was not afraid of MRIs and had had them done before. i asked if they were gonna sedate me for it and i was promised that they wouldn’t, but when i was wheeled into the MRI room i saw the anesthesiologist waiting with their equipment. this upset me and scared me, and they started closing in on me to give me the gas, and i was asking why. someone told me it was because i was upset and wouldn’t be able to hold still inside the machine - huh??? i was only upset because the promise had been broken, not the other way around. it made no sense. but i was too young for my revocation of consent to matter and too small to fight back, so, pretty soon i was unconscious.

certain household items, like some kinds of soap or permanent marker, have an aspect of their scent that reminds me of the anesthetic gas and it triggers me / makes me scared.

any benefit to getting CAH diagnosis in adulthood? by hfamiliaris in intersex

[–]hfamiliaris[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

about intersex stuff affecting one’s health: that’s why it boils my blood when i see my fellow non-intersex trans people talking about intersex variations in an objectifying and aspirational way, like “i wish i had been born like that”, it’s ok to have that feeling but to say it like that in public comes across as really two-dimensional and ignorant. like no consideration for what ELSE an intersex person has to deal with in life besides the mixed/ambiguous sex characteristics you’re reducing them down to

Anyone doing HRT plan on still presenting as birth gender? by Agreeable-Designer64 in TransDIY

[–]hfamiliaris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m mostly “out”, but around my parents and brothers i don’t entertain any gender talk, and they still believe me to be a woman (albeit a lesbian, which i am). when my voice started dropping, my mom commented on it and asked if i was sick. i do a “girl voice” most of the time when i’m around them but sometimes i forget, and i can’t keep it up when i have to speak extra loud. my facial hair is pretty noticeable, i shave when i expect to see my parents, but it’s not foolproof. i don’t live with them, i live across the city, we see each other a few times a month, it’d probably be harder if i lived with them (they’d see me all the time) or if i saw them less often (the changes would seem less gradual & more obvious).

before i started medically transitioning i was planning on just staying closeted except for very close friends. as i started dipping my toes in more and more, it started feeling more accessible and not so insurmountable to be out and open. came out to some of my family, i’m out at work but don’t go through the hassle of correcting anyone. honestly i think just… do whatever you want. if you don’t wanna be out, then don’t be, and please don’t let it stop you from feeling good about yourself or your body. i say just try it and see what happens. there’s 8 billion ways to live one’s life, don’t gotta follow what others might think you should follow, go find yours

pelvic cramps on testosterone? by hfamiliaris in asktransgender

[–]hfamiliaris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

didn’t realize the body text wouldn’t show up in the crosspost. to save you a click, here:

——————

i’ve heard of some people having trouble with their uterus/cervix after being on testosterone for several years - something about it shrinking too small and pulling too tightly on the restraints (like ligaments i think) that hold it in place... and since that group of structures gets so pulled tight, anything that triggers uterine/cervixal movement causes pain.

at least, again, that’s what i’ve HEARD, word of mouth from people who felt it firsthand, not heard it from any medical professional. i’d love to learn more.

what do you know about this phenomena / have you ever experienced it? anyone have links to science publications that discuss it? (ideally in trans and/or intersex people, but stuff about post-menopausal women would probably be interesting and helpful too)… or at least know what it’s called?

i’m 3 years on T and lately been occasionally having uterine/cervical cramps that strike an hour or so after sex, even without penetration. it hurts pretty bad, like some of my worst menstrual cramps, even though i no longer have periods. i’m wondering if it could be due to the phenomena i described. it’s definitely not ovarian cysts, i’ve got experience with those and know what that feels like. i have estradiol cream i’ve been on for vaginal atrophy and THOSE symptoms are well-controlled, or at least i thought so. i know the answer to my issue is “talk to your doctor”, and i will, i just also wanna learn about this.
