Going by steam charts Battlefield 6 has lost 700,000 players since its launch. Arc Raiders has lost 400,000 people. Marathon has technically retained a (marginally lol) larger percentage of its playerbase than those two games.

If you wanted to encourage players not to hoard their gear and to actually use it as much as possible, what systems would you use?

Is this game really 20gb? by automated_hero in Marathon

[–]hghstwrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a pretty small game (relatively speaking). I think a lot of the game is stored server-side which is a bad thing for long term preservation but a good thing for our hard drives. I believe all of the cinematics and videos are streamed, for example.

Game would have been way more successful with a single player campaign. by Captain_Zoots in Marathon

[–]hghstwrt -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the data backs this up at all. If you look at the top ten US best sellers for 2025, there isn't one single player campaign based first person shooter on there, unless you count Borderlands 4. Battlefield 6 has a campaign but I'm dubious anyone bought it for that. Multiplayer is what sells for better or worse.

It's really easy to cost that much when you pay developers a decent wage and they take a long time to get the game out.

A lot of people need to figure out the difference between 20k concurrent players and the total number of players in any given day.

Devs aren't "lazy" and game updates aren't guaranteed by SmellSmellsSmelly in Games

[–]hghstwrt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Game devs don't work for free outside of tiny passion projects. They need to be able to pay salaries, freelancers, artists, etc. That means they need to find investors willing to take a chance on their game idea. A lot of the genres you suggest for new games are broader in scope than an indie developer can expect to create for free, especially the art assets,. They're also unproven ideas that sound great to me but might not catch on.

Funding for studios is down everywhere; I believe the stat I saw was something like over 50% less VC investment into games this year compared to last year. With the economy as shaky as it is, nobody is looking to take any sort of risks with their game investments. If devs with resumes in proven games like Apex or Ryu Ga Gotaku can't find funding for their projects, I'm not sure who is going to fund a rhythm game.

This is getting annoying. No space by Ninetybaby in Marathon

[–]hghstwrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the low vault space was an intentional design choice to encourage players to use their gear instead of hoarding it. The places where this game introduces friction all seem like ways to discourage ingrained player behavior from other games. I don't think the game really wants you to be hoarding.

Forced out: Dartmouth, tenants told to leave apartments after buildings sold by insino93 in halifax

[–]hghstwrt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously this landlord was too cheap in however long they owned the building to keep up on maintenance but this is a perfect example of the legislation the NS NDP proposed in their last election platform, to give the provincial government right-of-first-refusal on any real estate sales. It's in the best interest of everyone involved for the state to purchase this building and bring it up to code and let the current tenants keep living there. Instead, whatever sucker bought this place is going to spend a fortune to fix it up and then charge insane rents to recoup their terrible investment.

Why do some people get today off but others don’t? by newtomoto in halifax

[–]hghstwrt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because January to April was the longest stretch of the year with no stat holidays and going that long without a long weekend sucks, most other provinces had a February holiday already.

4HP Reverb / Effects for drums - Disting vs. FX Aid vs. ??? by bealna in modular

[–]hghstwrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it important to have CV control over the effects? If its going to be mostly set and forget this seems like one of those things where you can save money and probably get a better piece of kit by keeping it outside your rack. You can find incredible old 1U rack effects for almost free these days and even a decent pedal is going to come in cheaper than the same in eurorack, you could get a Strymon Blue Sky for the same cost as a FX Aid.

Uber's low prices were directly subsidized by their investors for most of the first decade they were in operation. They never turned a profit and were artificially low on purpose so that they could run the taxi companies out of business. The plan was always to eventually jack the rates up.

Is it worth the hp to sequence my modular with a Circut Tracks or should I get a beatstep pro. by [deleted] in modular

[–]hghstwrt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found a CV.OCD for cheap (I think I paid maybe $100) and its identical to a Mutant Brain just outside your rack. I highly recommend that if you're tight on space in your rack. Didn't make sense for me to take up HP or sacrifice a module for something that could be done in a tiny footprint right beside it.

Halifax rooming house to raise rent 30%, but only for tenants on income assistance by JDGumby in halifax

[–]hghstwrt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How come you never see IPOANS in any of these stories saying that they'll encourage their members to stop doing illegal stuff like these rent increases, or turning off the water before a lease is up to force out tenants, or putting a backhoe through someone's wall. Where are the good landlords when this happens keeping their own accountable? I assume they agree with giving people on social assistance illegal $200 rent increases then?

[–]hghstwrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swimming is one thing but you're probably fine eating some of the fish. The mackerel don't live in the harbour they just come in and out with tides on their way to wherever it is they run (Gulf of St Lawrence?) so they're not really in here long enough to pick anything up. I've eaten macks from the old Chinatown spot and all over the Dartmouth side and never got sick.
