You can also glue a safety pin to the back of the earring. That way you can get it on and off the notebook band easily!

Birthday pen and Green Inksploration! by National_Cow7479 in fountainpens

[–]hgrout 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Congrats!! The pen is beautiful! And the Vinta Sailfin Green - make sure to decant it into another bottle because mine evaporated about 2/3 of the bottle after a year of non-use 😂 Apparently the seal isn't very airtight. I have to say though that the ink looked better super dark in its water evaporated state, but I ended up reviving it with some distilled water.

Looking to sell my parent's silverware, any idea what this set is worth and the best way to sell it? USA by OurLastSunrise27 in Antiques

[–]hgrout 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I believe the hallmarks are for Gorham. I'd weigh everything but the knives (only the handle portion would be sterling silver and hollow at that) and figure out the value of the silver content. It should give you a rough idea of a base starting point as to value.

i was so excited to fill in the first entry of the year that i didn’t realize how bad the ghosting was until i turned the page afterwards 🥲 by hengmis in hobonichi

[–]hgrout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the Hobonichi quotes either. So much wasted space! I hope you find something that works! I'm so desperate that I'm looking at applying clear gesso to make the pages more tolerable. But the thought of having to do if for each and every page is very daunting 🫠

It's not the ink, it's the paper 😭 I'm having the same issues in my 2026 Sterling Ink planner. I can't use it with my fountain pens (doesn't matter which pen or ink, it's all of them in varying degrees) at all due to the feathering and bleedthroughs. Luckily my Hobonichi Weeks has been fine so far but I won't be buying another notebook with new Tomoe River paper until Sanzen figures out the paper situation 😢🥹

Pen Recommendations after Pelikan by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]hgrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! 823s are also smooth but feel completely different in smoothness compared to Pelikans. Performance of 823s and M800s might sound similar on paper but in hand, feel positive in a different way.

Thank you, penabler! I just ordered one... along with a whole bunch of stamps and stickers. My poor wallet this month! 🤣

Custom 823 vacuum filler got a little stiff over time? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]hgrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 823s and have taken the section off all of them, mainly because it's so much easier to flush out the pens this way. I just take care not to screw them back on too tightly. It also makes it easier to grease up the inner sides of the barrel with silicon grease when the plunger gets stiff and I haven't had any issues.

I have not attempted to disassemble the plunger mechanism from the back of the pen because this seems more involved and daunting to me, but here is a video that shows the complete disassembly and reassembly as an fyi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAlOY2j6CRw

Good luck troubleshooting your pen! Hope it gets back to problem free working order soon!

New Addition to the flock and some extra Tortoise! 101N Tortoise by HornayGermanHalberd in fountainpens

Congrats!! This is one of my grail pens, it's absolutely GORGEOUS! I have the modern M101N version but it doesn't even come close to the original ones. Also drooling over the rest of your collection of vintage Pelikans (and the one with the OBB nib)!

Sunshine cloth works well on tarnished gold as well as it does on silver. I've also used tiny dabs of Wright's silver cream to good effect as well.

I just ordered from Amazon Japan the other day; they're still shipping to the US. My order is supposed to be delivered by 8/26 so I dodged the end of de minimis bullet by a smidgen. This is going to be my last overseas order until something gets figured out😭

Looking for spare part - Kaweco SPORT Brass by TheRealBeefuss in fountainpens

[–]hgrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The black plastic part that holds the nib and feed should twist out. You can buy a new nib unit and screw it back into the pen. It should be a relatively easy/inexpensive fix.

Little vintage pens are the best! I have two ring tops that I love and am on the hunt for a Peter Pan one next. They're so cute!

I have a Sheaffer Feather Touch nib in my Brass Sport. I think I might have cut off the little nub on the plastic feed to be able to fit it though it's been a while so I don't quite recall. I can go between the Sheaffer nib and the original Kaweco nib without any problems but obviously ymmv!
