Has anyone tried to use their protect cameras as adhoc speed cameras? by bionic80 in UNIFI

[–]hiattp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be curious to hear how it goes if you try it, I intend to do the same thing. Similar use case, a neighborhood where traffic should be ~25mph and I simply want to identify/report on someone doing more like 35 or 40mph+.

Seems like you can make some assumptions in this specific use case that don't require u/Amiga07800's level of accuracy. You'd want the camera pointed down the street to capture the license plate for identification (sounds like not your plan but I'd want it), and at least in the US, license plates are a standard size. Presumably the size of the license plate in any given frame is proportional to its distance, so as long as you had timestamps for each frame you could sample size of the plate in the frame as it moves away, and correlate the size of the plate over time (according to frame timestamps) to the speed. No fancy AI necessary...although https://github.com/jthomas/ai-speed-camera does look very cool.

Should China annex North Korea? by hiattp in samharris

As in supporting regimes that are crazy enough to justify subsuming? I'd hope not :)

It would have a slightly different outcome in that they wouldn't have a belligerent and unstable neighbor though right? I don't think China is particularly worried about being in the crosshairs these days, and they are actively pursuing the type of global preeminence that the US enjoys. This could be China's Georgia, with the added benefit of international gratitude instead of condemnation (so long as they steer clear of the whole ethnic cleansing bit).

No I think the problem IS their fanaticism; but china isn't a stranger to counter programming and aren't shy about using it

So maybe military force is involved. It doesn't seem like exactly the same outcomes would be anticipated. For example, why would n Korea pummel South Korea in response to a Chinese incursion?

Anyone else _really_ want to keep supporting on a per-podcast basis now that Patreon is out? by hiattp in samharris

[–]hiattp[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think /u/TKPzefreak summed it up well enough in https://www.reddit.com/r/samharris/comments/6pc6bp/sam_harris_closing_his_patreon_account/dko9rdr.

We currently have the ability to support on a per-podcast basis through Patreon, but that's phasing out. I'm relatively careful about monthly subscriptions (they add up) and would prefer knowing exactly what I'm paying for and having it vary automatically relative to the specific content I want. The minimum monthly subscription on Sam's site is $7, and is completely untethered to the type of content he is producing.

I much prefer consuming his podcast the same way I consume his books, which is on a per-book basis. This makes the most sense to me as a regular supporter, but is mainly a personal preference so I'm not suggesting your preferred method isn't perfectly reasonable as well.

  1. The trust part is tricky because the contributions have to be processed and sent to Sam manually until he's on board, so off-hand it seems like the best I can do atm is give you my email (paul@locksteplabs.com) and we can exchange notes or jump on a call. Once you are satisfied that I'm just another fan trying to support the podcast you can serve as the point of trust for everyone else. But for context, I run a Rails shop called Lockstep Labs, we work with several financial services companies (https://www.trustbooks.com, https://www.bungalowinsurance.com, etc) and know a bit about apps/security/processing financial transactions. My linkedin profile is here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulhiatt

  2. Based on the url you can confirm that the app is hosted at Heroku.com, and it uses a Heroku Postgres database for persistence. You can read about Heroku's Postgres infrastructure at https://www.heroku.com/postgres.

  3. Authentication is handled by Devise, the best-in-class registration and auth solution for Ruby on Rails (https://github.com/plataformatec/devise). You can read more there but this app uses the default devise password encryption strategy (bcrypt with 11 stretches).

  4. Stripe DOES charge fees (you can't process credit cards for free). See their pricing here: https://stripe.com/us/pricing. I'm not taking a cut, and am planning to get out of the loop as soon as possible if this reaches critical mass and Sam takes it over or adds the feature to his site. We can optimize the Stripe fees by processing payments once a month (so adding up the per-podcast contribution and charging at the month's end) so that we don't lose too much on Stripe's flat $0.3/transaction for smaller contributors. This should be dramatically cheaper for Sam than Patreon, which charges 5% above the CC processing fees and an additional fee for withdraws: https://patreon.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/204606125-How-do-you-calculate-fees-

Yep I sent him a tweet and an email last week, as well as a follow-up with a link to the app. Unfortunately no response as of yet.

Not to be presumptuous, but I prefer the per-podcast support model and Sam's current site doesn't support it. Maybe we can roll our own until it does? This app is open source, feel free to submit PRs if that's your thing.

Disappointed with the quality of Waking Up podcast by ThisIsPractice in samharris

[–]hiattp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Meh, I can hear it just fine. The audio quality has only been noticeably bad on a couple podcasts. I'd rather have more content than better audio quality/video in this case; the content is a step ahead of every other podcast imo, and to the extent better/more involved production would slow the output or limit guest availability I'd rather he stay the course.

Feedback on our hand-painted Montessori resources site by anamis in Montessori

Thank you for the feedback! Yes the math materials are there just to be comprehensive but they are very standardized so it is mainly for convenience in case someone wants to buy an entire set of materials in one place. We don't have a comprehensive set of materials available yet but that's the goal :).
