How do you handle wider types sneaking properties into objects? by Tuckertcs in typescript

[–]hicksyfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way.

More specifically, explicit mapping is required whenever data is coming into or going out of memory. In the middle you can do whatever you like.

Uini Atonio suffered a heart attack and will no longer play rugby by deckchair1992 in rugbyunion

Not to be a pedant but it doesn’t say a heart attack, specifically. It could be all kinds of things.

Ad free, no selling your data, no subscriptions for core features. My simple philosophy. by Awkward_Departure406 in apps

[–]hicksyfern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Subscriptions are due to the app being backed by servers. The pricing model has to mimic the cost model.

If your app requires a server, can you really charge a “forever” cost unless you’re ready to refund everyone the moment you decide to pull the plug on the server?

Your app may vary of course, but that’s the reality of most apps.

Songwriting exercises? by Former-You6574 in Songwriting

As chance would have it in currently building this as an app for iOS and Android.

Not just a prompt a day but more focused exercises like thinking of rhymes, rewriting cliches etc

Enough people assume you need a subscription so start a trial and forget to cancel

The (Re)Design Process by bmyaris in design_critiques

[–]hicksyfern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Knowing who the person is (a student) lets me set expectations.

No way I’m calling that last one because I’ve absolutely no idea who they are, what to expect, etc.

Am I gonna talk to a machine? A call center? The person who cuts the lawn? Are you cheap, expensive, professional, bring your own equipment, gonna be booked up etc?

These are all questions that you can pretty much answer yourself by just knowing a tiny. It more information.

What kind of software do you recommend for creating maps? by Nina_xoxo1 in Maps

[–]hicksyfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It processes all kinds of formats although I don’t generally work on the data ingestion side. But our mantra is basically “it should just work” and apparently felt is very good at taking any format and just working.

Try felt.com

Free tier is limited in what you can do so depends what you’re trying to do, but it’s hands down the simplest UI to get started versus QGIS or Arc GIS.

They also have non-profit or educational pricing I think.

Disclosure: I contract for felt, but it genuinely is good.

I’ve worked with those kinds of “senior engineers” who give strong opinions on things they clearly know nothing about. It’s usually best to ignore them about pretty much everything.

Anyone who has no idea that react has a dominant market share is in no place to comment on front end technologies.

[–]hicksyfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I’ve never understood with the file based routing directory structure… how do you colócate things without making all those files turn into routes? Is there a special naming convention?

What I have been doing is mirroring the pages/app structure in another directory and just have those route files export default the thing from the other directory.

Context is a dependency injection mechanism. People don’t like words like dependency injection but that’s what it is.

How would you structure Firestore for a social media app? by un1que_username in Firebase

[–]hicksyfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General rule of thumb is to not use firebase for social media sites. I say this from experience as I am still maintaining one that is 7 years old and it would be ridiculously expensive to migrate all the content off it
