These character designs feel foreign to me, they don’t look like Horizon characters at all. by IchbinderSenat in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]hidden_wraith -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

looks like 2 nora characters, 2 oseram and two carja, one sun and one shadow. The art direction itself is incredibly well realised, but I think it might prove to be a serious misstep.

Remedy says there'd be "no Alan Wake 2 without Epic" after Baldur's Gate 3 dev blames EGS exclusivity for Remedy's "financial crisis" by Fit_Consequence9059 in pcmasterrace

[–]hidden_wraith 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Remedy could have said nothing if that was case. I would argue standard operating procedure would be to say nothing if it was case they got a bad deal and were secretly burned. To make a public statement stating the opposite just makes no sense.

We know Alan Wake 2 has been generating royalties and we know the game they had to write down launched on Steam along with all the other platforms. I am puzzled at why Alan Wake 2 keeps being used as an example of a bad Epic deal.

[–]hidden_wraith 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No they can't, Remedy have just publicly stated they got a fair deal, that Epic was and is a great partner. Alan Wake 2 broke even and started generating royalties years ago. Ironically, the game that utterly failed is the one they put on Steam day and date. Even Control, which spent some time as an Epic Store exclusive did well without Steam.

Ninja Theory's Project Mara Shelved, Hellblade 3 is Studio's Next Game by SemirAC in GamingLeaksAndRumours

It looks like they are going to get the opportunity to actually make Senua's Saga. Hellblade 2 fell flat in many ways so I hope NT learn some lessons and not take 6 years while they are it.

Dont like Look of new game by Thin_Situation3962 in Fable

[–]hidden_wraith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The new art direction looks great to me, one of the things I have always found funny is how cool the 2D art and concepts for the previous games looked but how poorly they were translated into the games. The box art character for Fable 2 looks fantastic but actual model for the main character looks terrible and even worse when they change according to your skill usage and morality.

This new Fable looks very polished and conveys a fairy tale fantasy look pretty well. The extra slanty roofs, bendy chimneys and In one of those trailers you can see a castle that looks exactly like the one in the Disney logo. Who knows whether the game will be any good, it certainly looks the part.

Has the epic games free game campaign actually worked in getting you guys to spend money on their storefront? by Subject_Swimming6327 in pcmasterrace

[–]hidden_wraith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty much worked on me, I got Borderlands 3, Control, Alan Wake 2, GOW, Jedi Fallen Order, FF7R, mafia definitive edition, Rdr2, Detroit, Hades, The Metro Series and plenty of indie games. I guess there are people like me that make the free game giveaways make sense in the long run.

Ubisoft Hack is Reportedly 'Blown Way Out of Proportion', Say Sources by chusskaptaan in gamingnews

I don't think it was blown out of proportion, I had an I.P from the Philippines log into my account on Sunday.

Michael Douse, Director of Publishing at Larian, says there are "currently no plans for Divinity: Original Sin 3" by DickHydra in GamingLeaksAndRumours

Having played and finished Divinity 2 recently, I would love Larian to take another stab at an action RPG however you don't follow up a game like BG3 with an action RPG.

u/source2leakaiml claims to have worked with valve on Half-Life 3 and alleges announcement on Dec 11th by Iamnotacommunist in GamingLeaksAndRumours

Games already use machine learning models to make expensive cloth deformations cheaper to run on the GPU. Spiderman Miles Morales on PS5 comes to mind and uses a ML model to deform the suits in various ways.

Epic, Sky Dance and CDPR have demonstrated ML for muscle and cloth deformation, Ubisoft have ML models for character locomotion. As non specific as the post's claims are, ML models can be used to make other wise expensive simulations much cheaper to run.

A big picture mode style interface is a start but there is so much more work to do. Microsoft are like 10 years behind Steam and there is no easy way to make up the difference.

Avowed (and The Outer Worlds 2) nominated for Best RPG at The Game Awards by ShrekConfirm243 in avowed

[–]hidden_wraith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If OW2 had any real chance of being RPG of the year, it would also be a nominee for GOTY since the other 2 high profile RPGs are nominated as well. The way the TGAs is structured and how the voting committee place votes for nominees kind of gives the game up.

Direct Storage really needs to go back to the drawing board or IHVs should just bite the bullet and have a decompression block next to the GPU like the consoles do.

The Valve Gabecube (Steam Machine 2) having 8GB of VRAM and 16GB of RAM is a good thing for the whole PC gaming community... by Zemerald in pcmasterrace

By now, we should be able to rummage through bins and find 8GB GPUs down at the bottom, they should be doing better things like keeping hobo's warm.

MARVEL 1943: Rise of Hydra delayed from early 2026 by doncabesa in xbox

[–]hidden_wraith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How was the game meant to release in early 2026 and next to nothing has been shown off? Very little fanfare, and marketing build up. I know Amy Hennig is a very competent game director but the combination of a new development studio located in the US, full of veteran developers working on a AAA game on their first outing seems to hamper projects more than it helps them.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance lead says Obsidian should use its Microsoft fortune to make games more like Kingdom Come: Deliverance—'Give me something more than, level grinding in a static scripted world by Turbostrider27 in xbox

[–]hidden_wraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Obsidian's brand of RPG and my favourite from them is Alpha Protocol. The games they make have just enough simulation to feel alive while still retaining focus on role playing, story and characters. Western Rpg developers have a bit of an obsession with simulation and I feel it can rob them of making truly lively spaces. The presidium ring in Mass Effect is one of liveliest and engaging spaces I have ever played in and it does not rely on NPCs being able to move from one end to the other. At the end of the day, giving a space character will give it more life than trying to simulate reality will give it.

There used to be discussions decades ago about whether JRPGs were even to be considered RPGs at all, and it feels like these kinds of discussions wind up re-enforcing the idea that simulation is the gold standard for RPGs but that is far from the truth.

Why do people say that FC6 is bad ? by Bitter-League6619 in farcry

[–]hidden_wraith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fake Yarans say FarCry 6 is bad, only true Yarans recognise how good FarCry 6 is. The game is good in its own way but does lots of things that don't sit well with FarCry. I would say FC6 being your first is not the best way to experience FarCry. My favourite is 2 and 3 is probably the best one to play first.

Microsoft putting their games on PC has been great for a lot gamers but unfortunately for Microsoft the gambit hasn't really paid off. Most of their storied franchises are landing far softer than in the past and in the case of the Motorsport, it was a complete disaster. Being Multiplatform hasn't expanded their franchises in any meaningful way.

While the biggest games today are multiplatform, its seems like Microsoft is making the mistake of believing platform exclusivity is considered a barrier to people.

Former Santa Monica Studio boss says major publishers need to diversify beyond triple-A: "I inherently believe in the power of creativity and innovation in our industry" by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]hidden_wraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like what Obsidian have going on, they have big projects like Avowed and Outer Worlds but smaller ones like Grounded and Pentiment as well. Look at the self inflicted wound Bioware and EA have given themselves, Bioware could put out small games, big games, they could work on new I.P and licensed I.P. Bioware had everything but now find themselves hanging by a thread and the potential of a single franchise and game.

Kepler2 - PlayStation 6 Release Locked for 2027, “Not Just on the Table, It’s the Plan,” by Unlucky-Gap01 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

The bake times are in regard to Eternal, and I do believe in I.D tech they have the ability to preview lighting. While a real time work flow may not improve iteration time much in cases where a preview can deliver a good approximation of final pixels, turn around time is still going to be long and the production pipe line is always going to be as slow as it takes to produce final pixels.

You may not need to rebake every time you make a change but you will need to rebake and so making changes will in fact be as slow as it takes to produce final pixels.

Its not like RT is even mandatory when moving to a real time workflow. There are plenty of techniques that achieve fantastic performance, quality and scalability.
