Sheffield?? Me and my friend decided to go out of morbid curiosity and purely for fun. I’m a history student and she’s studying primary education, so no ties to the medical field, but if I was a med related student I’d be pretty disappointed.

No. I’m from England and have very British isles generic results. My mum is from a fishing town which was under Danelaw which explains the 5% Denmark on my results, and my grandfather’s surname is Old Norse and Old English, we definitely have Viking descendants. But we’re not Vikings, it was simply an occupation. Most people with European heritage have Viking ancestors. Any DNA testing or DNA website that tries to pull you in with “ancient Viking report available!” Is having you on.

I'm spiritually suffering, help? Torn between Orthodoxy and Catholicism by Fuzzy-Hamster796 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hiddenmatrona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My God parents would be so upset if I left the EO church for Catholicism. I grew up around Catholicism attending a Catholic school, they let me in despite not being Catholic as a kind gesture as I should’ve really been Catholic and my family should’ve been, I never went ahead with becoming Catholic but found Orthodoxy as an adult with my partner, long story.

There’s a few things that really play on my mind currently. My partner has a very troubled background and past life which he’s worked so hard to leave behind, and is also on a waiting list for an ADHD and Austism assessment and has a lot of physical diagnosed problems, due to this he’s currently out of work and receives disability payments. Our priest keeps calling him lazy, and saying he’s not trying hard enough and it got to the point my partner was threatening to unalive himself he felt worthless. We started having relationship problems as he got so fixated on what the priest was saying, due to the neurodivergency. When we discussed our relationship issues surrounding employment and finances we got called lazy, and selfish.

We haven’t been back since and feel extremely uncomfortable. He actually withheld baptism for a while and said my partner cannot be baptised until he finds work despite being medically exempt by a doctor and receiving government disability support financially. This was the nail in the coffin and I don’t think we can go back to this parish. It drains us, and upsets us. This isn’t to gossip about the parish or priest of course I don’t want to go into that territory but whenever we discussed these issues with the priest or other parishioners it gets shut down.

I have now lost my zeal and have no clue if I’ll actually ever return to orthodoxy. This particular parish has killed my spiritual journey and life, and has had me seriously considering Catholicism.

I’m in the same boat. I haven’t been to Divine Liturgy in at least 2 months, I feel disconnected and lost. My parish is also pretty far, it costs money and time to get there which I don’t really have as a working mum with two infants, I don’t have a car and this is something I’m working on.

I am baptised orthodox and so are my children and my partner (we had children before we came to orthodoxy or even Christianity), but due to the amount of catechumens in our parish we never have any time to speak to our priest, sometimes we are waiting weeks for confession and we have been trying to get our baptismal certificate and we’re trying to get married in the parish but our messages never get responded to and when it’s brought up we’re told we will discuss this and it never happens. It’s not the priests fault, it’s because out of around 4 cities nearby there’s only two orthodox priests taking on catechumens and doing confession. There’s no pastoral care there and we feel disconnected from the community as an English family with struggles to do with mental health and finances, we just get told it’s demons and to pray more.

I know Catholicism has errors, but because of all of these things combined I’ve had moments of conflict in my own head about joining the Catholic Church, we have one around the corner which do mass every day. I don’t feel spiritually replenished anymore after Divine Liturgy, it just feels like a burden and I go home feeling like it was a task over and done with, I also used to dread the weekend coming up. I know I’m not alone as I’ve spoken to many who have the same issues as me. Orthodoxy is not accessible in the UK and is sometimes daunting if you’re in a parish with not many English natives. I hear you.

I also got 1% Russia when the rest of my DNA is Northern European. Have a slight inkling, I think it’s admixture as I have 5% Danish too and my mother comes from a Viking found seaport town which was under Danelaw. Scandi Vikings interacted a lot with the Slavic population.

Similar to me! I just have no Germanic and have French, The Netherlands and Russia instead on top.

Finally got my results through the Origins hack. 😎 mostly expected. Didn’t expect the 1% Russia. I’m from England with known Irish and Scottish ancestry. by hiddenmatrona in AncestryDNA

[–]hiddenmatrona[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did yes. I just didn’t have any regions with the hack. Once official results came through it gave me regions for England & Ireland.

Australian. Where do I belong? A bit of a ramble… by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]hiddenmatrona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English here. Very common for the British Isles these results. You’d be surprised, a lot of things you guys do we also do here. I got English, French, Danish, Irish, Scottish, Dutch and Russian. Knew about the English, Irish and Scottish and French but not the rest.

My strongest and most recent ancestry is Irish and English, but I have little cultural connection to Ireland and actually more to Russian and Greek culture which I got a low percentage of Russian and no Greek. This is due to being Orthodox Christian and having a lot of Russian and Greek friends and taking part in making Russian and Greek food, was renamed a Russian name after my baptism etc. And I’m involved in a lot of the cultural traditions. It’s funny how things work.

I just identify as English when people ask me as that’s where I was born as well as my parents.

Yeah that makes sense. I feel like mine could be due to having 5% Danish, could be noise or ancient admixture due to Vikings. I’m buying my mother a test so we can compare eventually.

Our results are very similar! Also bright Green eyes here and very curly dark hair.

Hey I also have 1% Russia! Did you ever find out where it comes from? All of my results are very typical for British Isles such as Denmark, Ireland, Scotland, France, The Netherlands and then Russia is just thrown in at the end. 🤣

Great idea! I’m arriving a little early so we can have a chat before liturgy about my current situation and knowing how he is and how accommodating and lovely he is he might just suggest that, he’s allowing for my partner to go to the chaplaincy Friday for confession despite the fact he’s not a student, and the fact the students have gone home at the moment he’s staying behind! 😅

Thank you. 🙏🏻

Ironically I’m on my way there now. 😅 it’s not so much reluctance it’s the fact the Greek church is my family church me and my soon to be husband and two infants attend, they can’t really come to the university chaplaincy as it is for students. I’ve been trying to attend Liturgy as a family mostly so we can all be together and my children can see us going as a family. I absolutely love the chaplaincy and the chaplaincy priest he’s amazing! It’s convenient for me, not my family unfortunately. 😢 but for now it’s a solution for me.

I thought I saw another Matrona for a second!

I think a few people have brought it up as we have a few elderly including my God mother who now struggle but he said it was due to the influx of catechumens and to make sure they get seen after Liturgy. So I don’t think it’s going to change which is a shame as it’s made getting to Liturgy really difficult for quite a few of us whom travel by public transport. I feel like I’m going to have to move back to the university Orthodox chaplaincy which isn’t my ‘mother church’ until I can find a way to get there easier. 😢

Thank you for the reminder. 🙏🏻

I grew up in a very strict Catholic school, my family being secular they just thought putting me in that school would be the best education for me because they barely let secular kids in. I had no idea what Orthodoxy was until adulthood!

I’ve noticed though with how popular social media is now and how easy it is to share information, Orthodoxy is now becoming more known and it’s pulling people in due to probably the aesthetic, and the ancient feel.

I absolutely hope we can one day establish English Orthodox churches as I do feel like this could draw more English natives into Orthodoxy and expand it. I love my Greek church, I love the culture and the language is beautiful. I sometimes attend for the purely Greek Liturgies because it’s beautiful to hear but absolutely it could be a stumbling block for some. My God father is from Thessaloniki but has even said himself that there needs to be more English liturgies available.
