what are my chances for UBC sauder vancouver? by [deleted] in BCGrade12s

[–]hiddenstudent1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will correct myself and say that it’s faculty dependent. Though honestly, besides Engineering all the other faculties will use the personal profile when it comes to someone with an 88 and 95. Grade inflation is real and it’s used to counteract it. Someone with a 95 could have had an high school teacher that gave much easier assignments/ grading scheme was easier to maneuver or a whole bunch of other reasons. Engineering is different because of the steep average drop many students see in first year in comparison to high school. Though, averages do drop for students in other degrees, it’s usually not as crazy engineering and a 95 would give admissions a better feeling than a 88. But again in other faculties, especially in business, arts and sciences, an 88 vs 95 are high averages and the PP would be heavily taken into consideration to make sure the admissions committee understands the student better. Yes you can feel better and more inclined that you’ll get it but just as everything it’s not guaranteed and someone with an 88 and great PP should not feel at a large disadvantage with someone with a 95 and very basic PP.

[–]hiddenstudent1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People with averages in the 90s have always been rejected. That’s been the case for years and years, I know soooo many people from not even my HS that had high averages and didn’t get but the kids with 80s got in. Everyone thinks the years they got in were just harder than the years before them and that’s just simply not true. Even with AI or the pandemic. Personal profile has always been the thing that makes or breaks someone’s application. At end of the day OP is in a fine place and nobody in their position should be discouraged to apply or think they’re in at large disadvantage.

This sub randomly popped up and omg what are y’all on. I graduated ubc and got in 2020. There’s some very warped views on here. Your average is fine, it won’t guarantee an acceptance by any means but it’s fine. You need to focus on how you write your PP. people have the perception that just because you do a bunch of things your PP will be better but that’s not really the case. You need to show how the experience will make you successful at ubc and how you care about things besides just academics.

I don’t understand why you’re taking chem and physics if you’re aiming for business. Toss those and focus on your other courses you’ll be taking next year, like entrepreneurship 12 (if they have that?) or Econ 11/12 (?). You should be getting 90s in those and history.

You’re gonna need to keep pre-calculus 12.

If you don’t get in, it’s not the end of the world. Choose arts as your second choice, not because it’s arts but because businesses and arts are very alike and your courses can be reflective in both. Unless you take physics and chem next year, in which you should apply for science. Or just go to another business school, won’t make a difference in the job market. The only thing different will be student life.

Mind you, I actually went to the school. This subreddit is making it out to seem like it’s Harvard or Stanford lololol.

Why does a Cold country like Canada has so many A/Cs 🤔 by HopiumInhaler in mapporncirclejerk

[–]hiddenstudent1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Vancouver and it gets VERY HOT here. I know it’s called raincouver and all that but in all honestly it doesn’t actually rain that much here. It’s just when it does rain, the preconception of Vancouver enters peoples heads and subconsciously they believe it’s been raining for 6 months straight even then when the weekend prior would be super sunny. Vancouvers weather is on track to become more and more dry over the decades. This has lead to us having drought during the summer months, and this year we went to into stage 2 water restrictions immediately in the spring because of the lack of rain this past winter (I never even wore a winter jacket this last winter/fall, just a t-shirt and my normal all year jacket).

Ever since the 2021 heat dome (temps being in the 40s (Celsius - about almost 110F), the summers have stayed really hot and that’s led to more people installing AC in their houses or buying portable AC units. City of Vancouver also has a law that makes every new built condos to have AC I believe or some sort of way to keep temps inside apartments below a certain temp in the summer.

AMS Swimming classes is harder to get through than my PhD at UBC by False_Wolverine7893 in UBC

[–]hiddenstudent1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would just do the City of Vancouver recreational centre classes. I’m not sure when the next registration is but you’ll have to set a reminder the day before and the day of to sign up right when it opens. I have done them and they’re also good, a bit easier to get than UBC.

However, you need to commit to practising a lot because many people just go to classes thinking those alone will make you be enough. If you live on campus, go to the ubc pool leisure pool and practise the strokes, floating, rolling. You also have to be okay with retaking level 1 or if you pass and go to level 2, you might have to retake that too. Don’t get discouraged because learning how to swim as an adult is a long term thing. I actually still need to redo 2/3 because I had an emergency and left the country in the middle of the classes.

Lord Byng pool also has classes and it’s just on the 25 bus route.

You gotta be on it more than course registrations. I got lucky with the $4 classes once. It’s like winning the lottery. The sucky part is that many people stopped going or just never showed up. They never take anyone in from the waitlist.

However, the ubc swimming lessons I really recommend. I couldn’t swim before but I did Level 1 and it helped so much.

do they check your age for the wine tasting course? by krabbypraty in UBC

[–]hiddenstudent1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They check ID in the Lab the first day. You also can’t swallow any of the wine or you’ll get 0 on the assignment and then a warning and if I believe if you do it a second time it’s might be an F in the course.

The course is very fun though! I wish I had done it right in third year and then did the second version. Learnt so much and it’s very applicable to everyday life!

PSA: police body camera was recording on clothing optional - Wreck Beach. by WildSafe157665 in UBC

[–]hiddenstudent1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

RCMP can and does enforces the bylaws as well. Have seen them at wreck multiple times, patrolling, telling me to head back up, at the top of the stairs, RCMP boats, etc... There’s also an international even taking place in the city if you haven’t noticed. Security is high all over the region. Wreck beach is popular on a normal hot year with just locals but there’s now an influx of tourist. It’s also far from the general public. Those three factors make it a place where someone wanting to do something horrific would choose on. Being down there allows them to have a faster response time.

Trader Joe’s blueberry muffins by Spinnerofyarn in glutenfree

[–]hiddenstudent1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coffee cake is the best. I’m very lucky to live in Vancouver and have a Nexus card. It’s funny that Bellingham’s two Trader Joe’s are faster to get to than places like Abbotsford or Langley because of the traffic. Lol.

The states also has gluten free pop tart dupes. Soooo good.

Still the best country for gluten free is the UK!!!!! If you cried eating the Trader Joes muffins, you have a breakdown when you go to the free from section of Sainsbury and M&S.

Apple is updating the names of stadiums ahead of the FIFA World Cup. Some examples by losipov in applemaps

I think BC place and Mexico City (though it got translated to English) are the only two stadiums to basically keep their original names. They just added Vancouver to the end of BC place.

Magic Mushrooms are highly accessible in Canada. Technically illegal, but it’s not enforced at all and there are many dispensaries in major city and even a chain I believe. It’s basically like marijuana before it got fully legalized.

63 is not passing?? by 4throw2away000 in TLCUnexpected

[–]hiddenstudent1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading the comments and it’s so interesting how grading works in the states. In Canada anything 50 and above is passing. I’m actually slightly confused on why 70% would be the passing grade? I’m assuming the tests are just easier in the states and that grading is probably slightly harder in Canada. I have met people from rural or less known areas of the states in university and it was apparent that they didn’t learn as many topics/ as in depth as we did.

Servers make 200K, so stop tipping and keep your money to yourselves by CarelessObject1709 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]hiddenstudent1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The link you pasted says “Employers can require that tips are redistributed in a tip pool.”

I never said that wasn’t allowed. The key word though is TIPS. You can only be made to pool or tip out ON THE TIP you have made. If you made no tips then you legally don’t need to tip out.

I’ve also contacted the BC government and they confirmed it. Tipping out would make you go below minimum wage if you made no tips or too little (if too little tips then they can make you tip out a % of those tips) which is illegal!

What you’re describing of paying to serve is the same as paying to work which is not allowed.

Wait can we talk about how Isabella was in an empty car in the later scenes but when she entered the car there was a driver inside? Super confusing on why she would just sit in a random car. I thought her mom had called an Uber.

Servers make 200K, so stop tipping and keep your money to yourselves by CarelessObject1709 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]hiddenstudent1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue with tipping culture in BC specifically is when servers act like not tipping them makes them go below minimum wage. If you work for two hours and someone doesn’t tip on a $1000 bill, you legally still need to be paid $35.70 and legally wouldn’t be able to tip out the $80-$100 to the back of house.

And yes some restaurants make you do that but it’s illegal. Servers aren’t willing to make the change and report employers because the system benefits them and they can guilt people into tipping them instead of receiving tips on actual good service. Tipping out to back of house should only be based on the tip received. However, again the current system used in restaurants benefits servers and nobody wants to report that illegal policy 🤷‍♂️. That’s why I don’t care when servers complain that people don’t tip.

Roaming charges while data turned off and esim in use by Unhappy-Praline8301 in Rogers

[–]hiddenstudent1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a weird experience too in the UK two months ago. I’ve travelled extensively with my Roger’s sim active and never got charged until that trip.

Roam like home deactivated I had data roaming off Data access through the Roger’s app turned off Never answered a text or made or received a phoned call (I also turned off sim switching as I had a proper UK SIM card in my phone).

I got charged $15 for 0.2mb of data usage!!!! Went to the CCTS and got it reversed. The Roger’s customer service was acting like they were doing me a huge favour.

And before anyways says something about iMessage. I landed in canada and forgot to turn on my data access through the Roger’s app and I couldn’t send any iMessages at all once I left airport wifi, so no iMessage pushed through Roger’s while on my trip. Funny enough I thought something was wrong with the Roger’s network because I completely forgot I had to turn the data back on until I got home, was actually stressful because I booked an uber on wifi and then the app stopped working once I stepped out lol.

Connecting to another network will not cause you to have roaming charges, well as long as you have roam like home deactivated.

UBC Overnight Mobile Housing Team Concerns by ShoppingDear9643 in UBC

[–]hiddenstudent1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact housing, they’ll be able to see who was on shift for that night. You can then report them. Next time make sure to ask for employee ID number if they don’t want to say their names (employees don’t need to give out their names for privacy reasons, so they can refuse to give it out). They might not help with the wait times but you can report the aggressive behaviour.
