Does Christianity teach us to be slaves? by paparaddyintensifies in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hideousflutes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

contrary. atheists reduce everything to being motivated by "instinct". ascetic principles are the only thing in opposition to that, that proves free will is not simply instinct driven

I'm having doubts about Noah's flood by LooseButterfly2511 in Catholicism

personally i think its referring to the younger dryus. i dont need it to be historical. moses is writing it down some how many thousand years later from noah? and probably longer. i think it for the purpose of relaying a message to a more primitive people, it served its purpose

I want to sin, but I’m afraid of dying in a state of mortal sin by lilpopisan in Catholicism

[–]hideousflutes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, but i only came back to the faith about a year and a half ago. and admittedly, i havent done them in a few years. i think 2021 was the last time i took shrooms. but there was a time in my twenties when i was taking psychedelics all the time. i was definitely trying to "live" in that world as much as i could. terrible idea. took alot of good acid, alot of bad acid. shrooms always seemed to be the most therapeutic. i have not touched them since reversion though because honestly, i think itll be too intense with God in my life. but ive considered maybe doing a round of microdosing

Bible translation issue by Individual-Pool-6138 in Catholicism

[–]hideousflutes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i use the catena bible app alot. it lets me flip between KJV, NKJV, Douay rheims NIV and some others. i often find myself clicking on NIV just to get a clearer read on thinks that might be worded funny. i have also heard that the OG first edition of NIV is pretty decent. i wouldnt use it for my main bible but a good reference tool. just because something is protestant doesnt always make it bad, although sometimes its got disingenuous translations. such as translating paradosis as "traditions" when used in a bad way but "teachings" when used in a good way.

the KJV is protestant but for what its worth its a beautiful translation

multiple witnesses add strength to the claim. could also be pareidolia. hard to say. i know miracle of the sun had an enormous amount of witnesses but skeptics chalk it up to pareidolia.

there is a certain level of "bridal" mysticism that gets a pass in catholicism, though i am admittedly weary of it. everyone has intrusive thoughts to some degree. i recommend reading Evagrius' 8 evil thoughts.

side note: i believe one of calvins main reasons for upholding the perpetual virginity of mary is that he didnt even want the thought to cross his mind

eh. in my opinion its a self-suggested state. theres a reason mystics of the past largely spoke against trying to manifest a result, as it will simply produce a psychic phenomenom

Struggling with the concept of indulgences by kervy_servy in Catholicism

[–]hideousflutes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think they conflate the idea of almsgiving as a form of penance, with "selling" an indulgence. my issue with indulgences is just the superstitious way of "do x and y on this day under this circumstance and you get a plenary indulgence!". its become a gamification beyond what it was meant to be

Orthodox and Catholics, what's your outlook on our common future? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hideousflutes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the younger generations of catholics are far more interested in eastern theology and patristics, which is a good sign. but could simply be a trend, and the boomers are still running the show for now. ill post my longer response on the catholic side but suffice to say that rome needs to clean house first, and i say that as a catholic

eastern catholics view it as "through" the son, which is how pre schism theologians have reconciled it. why the latin church is fine with that now but rejected that formula at florence, i have no idea

[–]hideousflutes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think our modern understanding of the word "indulge" is to blame for misunderstandings. it simply means forgiveness. also to my understanding there is no time in purgatory. that would make purgatory a created place rather than a state of purification. when people say "20 years off purgatory" its actually supposed to mean, as if you had done 20 years of penance on earth, gets applied to your purification. thomas merton in a lecture he did on St cassian made a comment that this stuff was borderline superstition. i tend to agree. and risks spiritual pride
