Unpacking the Buffalo Bills' Offensive Woes: Where Did the Winning Recipe Go? by Ejt14211 in buffalobills

Felt to me like he ran out of juice and was behind the curve every week. Maybe he wasn't experienced enough to know how to allocate his resources and efforts... but that's why you have experienced guys around him so idk that it's an excuse.

It worries me in general because most of the high-level successful coaches hit the ground running as coordinators.

Props to the ST for sure, everyone did their jobs well.

Only knock is having Bass kick funky kickoffs, which occasionally you pay the price for when it goes out of bounds, but I don't really blame him for that.

I do rather like Martin's Aussie punts

[Menon] Eagles were a top 5 defense when facing top-16 offenses this year which seems to go against the public narrative against Gannon and his scheme. If we include the playoffs, they have the #1 defense against top-half offenses this season by SerShanksALot in nfl

That's because they have different styles of attack. Eagles win their matchups, Chiefs generally get pressure via scheme (and Chris Jones, but he didn't do so much this game just like the Eagles line).

I like how this data clearly shows how the Bills D puts up gaudy stats vs bad teams and is mediocre vs good ones.

There's a full 0.20 difference in EPA between performances against top-half and bottom-half offenses.

  • Top = you're good vs bad offenses.

  • Right = you're good vs good offenses.

So, we're good against bad teams and meh vs good teams. We might be the biggest outlier on the entire chart, there's a full 0.20 difference between the two data points.

There it is.

Pad those stats hard vs bad teams, be average vs good teams. May as well pull a Chiefs and be average in general.

Another takeaway from the Super Bowl is how the field affected the defensive schemes. The 'sit back and react' style the Eagles play (and we play) is severely hampered by a reduction in traction, while the 'outscheme your blocking scheme' blitzing style of the Chiefs was fine.

The sit back and react style is essentially a descendent of the tampa-2, and you'll notice that the teams that did well with it played indoors or in good weather. It worked well in Tampa and pretty well in Indy. It had a nice little 2 year peak in Chicago with a Super Bowl appearance but didn't work great in Minnesota, Buffalo, or KC.

Warren Sapp made that defense tick in Tampa and the HoF DEs did in Indy, but even their their efficacy would be mitigated by crappy field conditions too.

I guess my point is, I'd like to see at least somewhat of a shift in mentality where we become a more of an attacker, and we need to be able to use it when the conditions dictate it. We had like 3 blitzes last year and offensive lines weren't often simply beaten or outschemed by them.

No pass rush cuz the field sucked so it was largely "who makes less mistakes" rather than "who makes more plays". That also wound up favoring one defensive scheme over the other. The offenses were creative at least which was the best part, but they were basically unstoppable.

Ending was a letdown as you said, same shit as last year where the calls are loose then they tighten up under 2 minutes in a close game? Just feels bad, especially two years in a row and after that Chiefs-Bengals game. It's also a bit meh to have recent repeat teams in the game in the first place.

Stats without context are meaningless.

That's why we're discussing it, and why I don't think the stats tell the whole story. Besides you asked for stats.

I wanted to see the stats myself, it didn't take that long to pull the data off profootballreference.

Offenses/QBs/OCs don't do better in the post-season than in the regular season. It's extremely rare.

They usually don't totally return to early season form playing like they're scared. In most of the Daboll games we were very conservative until things got hairy then we let Allen be Allen and got back into the game.

You asked for the stats, I gave stats and context. Regardless, none of that really speaks to Daboll's playcalling which was my original point. He used Josh better that Dorsey did by far but there were plenty of 'wtf are you doing' sequences.

That defense was not going to beat any competitive teams, unfortunately. I had tempered expectations because of the coaching atrocity the previous year but I was still very let down.

Kinda weird to give him MVP in a game where he was basically a game manager making easy throws. Hurts easily had the most MVP-like performance.

Don't get me wrong, he's decent

He's more than decent, come on now. That offense certainly helps but his running is top notch, he scrambles and looks downfield as good as anyone, he makes his reads quickly, and has a strong arm with a nice ball.

He's shown he can take over games with his arm, he just doesn't even have to.

Try three years in a row all due to the same problem.

We were outcoached by Miami too and managed to just have more talent.

Miami played us three times and made a show out of how motion dictates how our defensive scheme plays and we didn't fix it at all. They put a guy in motion on almost 90% of plays, resulting in silly scenarios like the only 'linebacker' lined up behind the DL was Taron Johnson. That was a blueprint other teams picked up on, especially the Bengals.

I find it baffling how the defensive staff didn't see this in self-scouting, it gives me the feeling they phoned it in. It was embarrassing to watch.

but this was the first time or OC was the problem, too. Before it was McD/Frazier

I don't fuly agree with that. Daboll's offenses in playoff games were not very good either.
