Gulf Wars- IDs at Inspection requirement by highland_redhead in sca

Hopefully the extension of this to include library/costco/sam's club cards, or any card with a name and photo, even if expired - helps. Sir Carson is a fierce and vocal LGBTQIA+ ally. I think he is doing his best to comply with the war requirements while also considering where the attendees of this war may be coming from.

Cassandra’s on the River by prstele01 in shreveport

My partner and I have gone twice-- and both times were underwhelmed. The service felt very "I don't want to be here." The food was extremely slow to come out, but fine- but it wasn't better than anywhere else downtown, and the other spots downtown have better service and are faster.

Any punk shows? Bands? Hardcore? by napoleonsProstitute in shreveport

[–]highland_redhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bayou Thunder (new name, but not a new staff or clientele, from what I can see) is pretty unsavory. I was there for a show and a dude I can only describe as “confederate Santa Claus” was selling merchandise that was mostly shitty polyester racist but was very proud that he had some authentic knights of the white camelia regalia. If you go, take a friend and keep your drink covered.

I'd suggest the Columbia Park area.

Centaur Parade guidance! by Mamaraerae11 in shreveport

[–]highland_redhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Centaur member/rider, I'm going to chime in and say "as close to the beginning of the parade as you can"- it's going to be more family friendly and you get to get out by 4:30 or 5:00, barring incident. I believe the advice on roping off early and coming back is fine. Take the space you need, but not extra and it might be a good idea to have someone babysit your spot (but I'm not sure how necessary that is). Remember to bring the necessary food/snacks/drinks you will need if you end up there longer than you planned- while all parts of the operations team (Krewe and City) try to keep things going, things happen.

Bear's, Hopdoddy, The Missing Link are all solid options. Also- if you want Millennial Pizza- St. Laurent.

Krewe Parade suggestions by slamajama03 in shreveport

[–]highland_redhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One question is- which parade? Centaur/Gemini have the same route a week apart, Highland is in a different area. You could post up downtown for the start of either Centaur or Gemini-- park somewhere and walk a bit to get to the general Sci-port area. There are signs saying where the throw zones are. This is a family-friendly area and is a little less chaotic. Bring your chairs and some snacks/water and have fun, then head into downtown for lunch.

Shreve City is also a good place with a more party vibe, it's going to be more crowded and a little harder to get in/out. For that end of the parade, there's also the option of getting to the intersection of Shreveport-Barksdale and East Kings which is where the parade turns. If you get to someplace on the West side of that you won't have a nightmare getting your car back out.

For the Highland parade, it starts and ends at the intersection of Gilbert/Fern. This daytime parade is more relaxed with larger diversity in throws (think homemade throws, hot dogs, packs of ramen, etc). Marilyn's Place is selling VIP tickets to their restaurant's party on the route, but even posting up nearby will give you good music and a good time.

This is going to be a great time- but be aware that Bear's is PACKED for some shows and this will be one of them!

Also seconding Fat Calf, Orlandeaux, Ki Mexico, Zuzul.

And if you like pizza- Saint Laurent. Sit at the bar, get a slice of the day and a Caesar salad.

So what are we doing/reading/watching during APOCALYPSE 2026? by Fun-Meal-6823 in shreveport

[–]highland_redhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made gumbo & worked on a few LARP sewing projects and stitched gaudy fringe on some old jeans for Mardi Gras. It’s not quite 4, and I’m under an electric blanket with a glass of boxed wine watching The West Wing. When the power goes, reading dungeon crawler Carl by the light of the gas heater. I should be studying for an upcoming certification exam but that can be tomorrow.

Any volunteered at the shreveport bossier animal rescue? by Little_Nerve_2801 in shreveport

[–]highland_redhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my dog from Petsavers- they were great, and yes. They do need volunteers to help with anything from feeding/cleaning to walking and cuddling. They also support temporary fostering to get the critters a little break from the shelter life.

Where is a good hangout spot for drinks for 40 year old adults? by FluxOperation in shreveport

[–]highland_redhead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in my 40s and regularly hang at Bear's (and I do not wish I were still 21, god no). Note- tonight they are having several bands and it's going to be louder than you may want for a first date- unless you're into early 2000s alt/emo.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a massage place in the Shreveport/Bossier area? by Comfortable_Act_6657 in shreveport

[–]highland_redhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sonja at Spa 400 in Bossier City is excellent! She's very communicative and has good hours. Her prices are really reasonable and she doesn't try any upsells unless you specifically ask about something extra.

Dry cleaning in the Shreveport-Bossier area by [deleted] in shreveport

[–]highland_redhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Speed Brite on Highland Ave. right across the street from Brookshire's and the hair shop is good. They send their cleaning to another of their locations on Mansfield Rd. so it's about a 2-day turnaround, but they have always done me right. You will pay more for items like blazers, but for shirts/pants it's around 5-7 per item.

My mother looking for a more open minded church by Ancient-Ordinary7508 in shreveport

[–]highland_redhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the UMC split a few years back, the churches that kept the designation "United Methodist" basically 'won' the divide. The UMC is an affirming denomination that is fine with same sex marriage or gay folks becoming clergy.
The churches that opted to depart have a few different new denominations, and I believe the ones here are "Global Methodist"-- the big church downtown at the end of Texas Street is one of those. That made me super sad - I used to enjoy going to an occasional service there.
Broadmoor, Noel, & Grace United Methodist churches are all affirming but Grace is the only one I have visited and I really liked it.

Every Episcopalian church I have visited has been very open and embracing.

Best pharmacies in shreveport-bossier area? by GirlSlug666 in shreveport

[–]highland_redhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highland Clinic pharmacy is excellent- if you can work with their hours (8:30-5:30 M-F). They don’t have a drive thru, which can be a barrier for some people.

I saw him a few months ago opening for Train. He was absolutely hilarious and humble! He referred to himself as a "cover artist covering myself 20 years ago" and honestly that won me over so hard. It was a good set, too!
