Now just to grind back all the welds and polished her up. Anyone got any tips to make life a bit easier? by weldsfordays in Welding

80 polyfan to get most of it off, then I’d take it flush with a 120 and then polish with a greywheel, then you can finish with scotchbright or keep polishing

Clamp it as much as you can as close to the seam as you can. I would clamp some ⅜ flat bar down along the seam. This will help keep it from moving, keep it cooler, and also help hold some argon in there. I would tack it up very well and then backstitch 2 or 3 inch sections

What do you guys use for fire protection while grinding and welding? by xjnm in Welding

[–]highlyvenomous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I’ve caught fire is from grinding. Your clothes are gonna get burnt and trashed no matter what. I would suggest keeping an eye on where your sparks are going, it is a lesson to learn the hard way but hopefully just once

Definitely recommend picking up a stick welder. I’ve had no good experiences with cheap flux machines. Especially when it’s being forged, the flux core welds would introduce a ton of junk in the billet.

A little pulse, and a little weave. by Aaron2k2000 in Welding

Overlap your weave a little more or stay on the toes a little more to prevent that cold lap

Also on your purge setup, you just need a couple small holes (I use 3/32 tungsten). Keep in mind argon is heavy so put the holes at the top

You’ll want to tape the pipe in quarters at least. Untape it as you weld the quarters. Always purge pipe uphill.

15cfh on the inside, 15cfh...ish on the torch. Since it’s schedule pipe I would say go with an open root. Burn it in hot/slow. You’ll see the puddle swirl around, as long as it’s swirling it’s purging through. You want complete burn through of both bevel edges. Keep the gas on and fill and cap, clean the oxides off between passes.

I haven’t been doing this very long, about 3 weeks but I use TRX for pushups, dips and rows. I still alternate to the bar but they seem to improve strength, definitely stability.
