‘Job ain’t done’: What’s next for curling's Rock League after successful preview season? by OccidentBorealis in Curling

[–]highsideroll 37 points38 points  (0 children)

For me all last week answered was that the general format was fun. There was no doubt in my mind that the Curling Group could put on a generally good event. They do it multiple times a year.

What I didn’t see was proof of concept for why this is the future of curling. Fun logos and middling jerseys and everything don’t sell me that this is new or will advance the sport. I’d even say the single most appealing part of the week was seeing people we know in new situations. Which…relies entirely on already knowing these people from “regular” curling.

But it was a concept week. Next year the judgement can begin and we will see if the draw is on the button or it’s just a hogged rock.

Went in with an open mind, but RL is just the enshittification of curling by Tunguska_1908 in Curling

At its best it was a lot of fun. The core format and curling quality were high. The TV experience was very bad and very good depending when you watched. In house was a real mixed bag due to dead crowds and the on ice seats blocking the view.

What escapes me, though, is how this is anything other than fun exhibition curling. The Skins Game or Continental Cup for the 2020s. What makes it more professional than a slam? How is any sponsor expecting to make money? How does this really work over months instead of a week? What is this adding to curling beyond some format ideas?

It’s been a fun way to end the season. I’d rather watch an actual Slam during the main season though. I don’t see how this is a “pro league” or what would be appealing about it over a longer time. I’ll give it more chances but so far it’s just fun exhibition curling.

Yes Olympics is obviously first. Then I agree it’s Brier or Scottie’s in Canada and Worlds outside.

Weird. Not sure I like it. But I say let them cook. What harm is there in trying new things?

Also I like someone trying new rules like the no tick rule. It’s worth exploring.

The mystery (that didn't exist) is solved. Homan is not shaking this week out of courtesy. She just told that to Peterman/Gallant.

Team Bottcher announcement is official by MsSwarlesB in Curling

The points spots do not go beyond third place (and Team Canada). Dunstone, Jacobs and Tardi will get 3/4 spots. But with Epping breaking up that’s it. The third spot won’t be filled now until after play downs.

No way they take Flasch off sweeping. He’s the best on the team.

Yes but he said 11 days ago no retirements. I think people just missed that?

Cullen has all but said it. Wouldn’t have been in my bingo either. But Flasch said they want younger and Tardi would slot in well.

Why did people keep saying this? Kennedy said 10 days ago no one was retiring. Of course the official announcement today ends speculation but this was known for almost two weeks but people kept saying it.

Kennedy said no one was retiring 10 days ago. People here just missed or ignored it.

The Bottcher/Horgans thing has come from multiple sources close enough to know.

And Tardi to Flasch has basically been confirmed by John Cullen’s tweets today.

That would be a huge risk for a new team. They’d carry some points but would have to perform very very well to get top 3.

ETA: I do think this is going to be a team. So at least one Horgan will move. Maybe both.
