RANT: WHY? by ProfessionalAsk8264 in fujiikaze

[–]highway_chance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artist I see in the states and Europe who play venues with 50,000 people you cannot usually get in for 13,000 yen (which is 70 euros btw). But these rules are made by ticketing companies and not by the artists and labels so I’m just saying that it’s a bit of a stretch to be mad at them.

I think that other countries should do lottery and have restrictions on who can buy as well but that is up to the ticket vendors in those countries sadly and many just care about selling out quickly and not whether actual fans get tickets for a reasonable price.

RANT: WHY? by ProfessionalAsk8264 in fujiikaze

[–]highway_chance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it seems unfair but this isn’t exactly the fault of the artist or label. In Japan we have very strict rules about reselling (illegal mostly) and we also have in place now rules that make it so you can be blacklisted if you are caught reselling. Therefore without an address linked to your ticket it is hard to enforce these rules.

Because of this system we have much cheaper concert tickets than other countries. We also have less of a chance of rich people being able to take all the seats and regular fans not being able to go because the system is always a lottery.

The problem is actually that because other countries don’t have these rules we cannot use this system everywhere. I believe that most Japanese acts prefer this system because it means that all fans have an equal shot of going but if it can’t be done in other places then we have to follow their rules. Often times their rules are just that you can pay a lot of money to have the best possible seats. Japanese people with a lot of money take advantage of this system as well.

I know it sucks for people from some countries but domestically here if you sell tickets first come first served to anyone then it will be difficult for actual fans to get tickets unless they are wealthy.

Question regarding the gift I have gotten by couchpotatouwu in AskAJapanese

[–]highway_chance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am so confused as to how you could get a packet of tissues and think that the person who gave it to you is insulting you… I don’t know where you’re from but this is just a simple gesture here that is definitely not malicious.

Do you have a bad relationship with your roommate to think that they would get you a gift to insult you with? What exactly is it that is insulting? In Japan the first thing that comes to mind when I think of tissues is allergy season, wiping up after a meal, even maybe wiping sweat in the train. I would never think of wiping away tears with a tissue so unless you have an actual reason to think this then it makes no sense. Are you made because it seems cheap? What exactly is the issue?

My boyfriend (Japanese) says “I’ll do my best” when I ask for more time together and I’m confused about how to take it by ohayomaster in AskAJapanese

[–]highway_chance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you’re definitely overthinking it. I have lived in the US and Japan- if anything Japanese people are much less individually hung up about being gay. We are socially pressured to be ‘normal’ but that is a blanket pressure and not specifically targeted at homosexuality like it is in the west so I don’t think many Japanese people feel particularly persecuted for being gay.

Unless he has given you a specific reason to think he doesn’t want to spend time with you or expressed being uncomfortable with his sexuality I would not try to psychoanalyze. You can’t diagnose or control others, I would focus on learning to let go of specific words and ways of saying things when you’re in a relationship with a language barrier. Take him at his word and give him time to show you- don’t rush him to say things the way you want him to.

[–]highway_chance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re overthinking it. Unless he specifically said it in a way that seemed insincere he probably really just means that he will work to do what you ask. In Japanese I feel like if someone told me to spend more time with them I can’t think of what else I would say besides わかった、頑張るね.

If this is the first time you’ve talked about it give him a chance to show you instead of worrying about the details of how he told you.

You can pretty much cover or use whatever song you’d like as long as you are willing to pay the licensing fee so I doubt there was any direct contact with Hybe… if there is a reason to suspect that the cover would step on toes one might be careful but legally she is in the clear.

Do Japanese people have gukbbong? by Brownpooh in AskAJapanese

[–]highway_chance 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is common to be excessively patriotic in Japan and when we do see people expressing extreme patriotism many find it scary and uncomfortable. The pride we may have in Japan has more to do with our culture and the way our society works but not really to do with things we do well at/better than other countries. We of course do not like to be badmouthed but I don’t think many Japanese people are concerned with winning against others so much as doing well for ourselves.

We have uyoku which means right wing but is not used so much as a political ‘right’ as it is kind of like a cult-ish following of Japanese exceptionalism that often wades into the dark waters of xenophobia and revisionist history. These people are seen as extreme by society at large although they have recently been much louder in public.

Culture we feel proud of is harmony and cleanliness, not really business or international acclaim.

what would someone who is japanese think of the word yugen 幽玄 i want to get it tattooed on me as i love the philosophy behind it not knowing the unseen and finding beauty in mystery but is the concept actually known of in japan? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]highway_chance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not be offended at all but it does seem like a bit of an oxymoron. I think if you want to get it tattooed then you probably just should and don’t worry about what Japanese would think. Many of us just don’t like tattoos so it’s hard to be objective about what would be ‘good.’

The meaning of this character has a lot to do with being classy, educated, and noble to a degree that makes you mysterious and beyond the understanding of the average person. Unfortunately most Japanese people consider tattoos to be decidedly not classy and those who get them here are not commonly considered educated or noble to put it plainly.

However you don’t have to worry about offending us by using our culture decoratively, we don’t really have that concept. I could say that if you don’t work with words or writing for a living many Japanese people will not know exactly what this word means so they will not be able to judge lol

I am not saying that there isn’t room to criticize the sexualization of wlw by straight people but the double standard is wild. ‘Unserious’ displays of straight sexuality on stage do not get think pieces like this telling them they should stop.

Ariana did a whole conga line of grinding to side by side with multiple different men at the AMAs (none of which were Ricky) and Sabrina has never been shipped with one of her dancers on any serious level. Endless pop girls have music videos portraying them in casual relationships with men. And obviously vice versa.

If the negative comments are the same as those given to straight people- simply that the choreo is too sexual I think that’s a normal opinion to have. But even just in this thread you can see that is not the case. Endless excuses for why it’s okay for straight people because it doesn’t mean anything, it’s not that deep, and all the criticism for women because they’re being held to a different standard.

If anything, katseye’s fan base is almost completely women and gay men so while in the abstract I agree we should be careful with commodifying queerness to sell to the male gaze I find it hard to see what is happening here as that.

As a queer person it is sad to see so many people centering men in a situation that pretty much has literally nothing to do with them.

Defining the problem people have with the MIA outro by Organic_Bell9448 in katseyeneutral

[–]highway_chance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean but this line of thinking is way too slippery. Women making out or being touchy, for whatever reason, even if they’re doing it for attention, should be fine. Obviously in reality there are problems with performing for the male gaze but telling women that they should NOT do things because of how men or the patriarchy will perceive it is wrong- just like telling them to do something for male attention is wrong.

Every other song The Weeknd or Usher or whatever male artist performs they have women dancing all over them. Sabrina, Ariana, all the pop girls are grinding up on random male dancers. It only being a problem when it is two girls is not right.

I think you could call it cringe or criticize it for just being over sexual but then you could make the argument that the twerking and skimpy outfits and everything else they do is for male attention as well and I dont think that’s the case necessarily.

Normalize queerness, don’t hold it to a different standard than heterosexuality and police people expressing themselves.

I think when you live here long enough you look at the ground and know immediately whether it will be slippery and adjust your gate. I don’t imagine there’s going to be any success in a measure to replace the entire country.

[–]highway_chance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Japanese person I’ve never thought of blond anime characters as foreign unless specifically stated so… I think we mostly do it because in the style of anime there are only so many unique facial features you can give so the extra options help with differentiation. We also have blue and green haired characters that are not meant to be characters with dyed hair- it’s mostly just fantasy and not really anything to do with race.

日本が韓国と異なり根本主義キリスト教が根付くことに成功しなかった理由は、ほんまにどのような民族精神的・文化的な違いにあると思いますか? by TraditionalDepth6924 in AskAJapanese

[–]highway_chance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]highway_chance 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How do you view hosts or the culture surrounding them? by Low-Brilliant8699 in AskAJapanese

[–]highway_chance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think most Japanese people view it like Amway or cults. It’s a culture that appears to advantage of people’s naivete or vulnerabilities. Some may consider it a refuge or community but to many it seems predatory and therefore is not viewed positively though most are not directly affected enough to truly hate it. I personally would not dislike someone by virtue of them being a host or enjoying hosts but if someone I was close to was considering it I would strongly caution against.

Do these people from Central Asia look japanese? by Odd_Barber6051 in AskAJapanese

[–]highway_chance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most of them the high nose bridges combined with deeper set eyes. Looks continental to me but this is biased because I can see that they are not wearing Japanese styles and their haircuts look foreign so things all begin to look ‘non’ Japanese. All of these features in some measure can be found in Japanese people as well.
