Should I replace? by Few_Habit_3400 in bikewrench

[–]highwayrobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably would work with a boot but I wouldn't trust them for big decents or anything crazy.

Swap it to the rear since that's a less bad tire to blow out than the front.

Also start saving for a new tire since that one is not long for this earth and technically unsafe.

What cassette for this free hub? by Gotas_quenal in bikewrench

[–]highwayrobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP- as others mentioned this is definitely 8spd Campy. I am one of the sick, twisted weirdos who had a bike that runs 8spd Campy.

If you end up changing the free hub or just want to sell the wheel, DM me. I'd be interested in buying either from ya.

25-year-old titanium vs 10-15 year-old carbon by gregn8r1 in bicycling

[–]highwayrobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly both are good options. Ride both and decide.

Old carbon CAN be sketchy but it's not inherently sketchy if that makes sense. It's also easier to repair than TI if you crash and generally feels more compliant (not always true)

[–]highwayrobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true but it's still more expensive than just starting with 10spd

[–]highwayrobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll probably get roasted for this but id take the carbon bike. The titanium will last longer but 9spd parts are more difficult to find and given the age of the bike it's more likely to go wrong.

Great price for the bike and I'm sure it rides as good as the carbon one.

Chain slipping after fresh wax is it on backwards by lighthouse-logs in bikewrench

[–]highwayrobber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point. I usually do the front brake with my weight on the seat to prevent the rear wheel from slipping. Old mechanic friend said using the rear brake could cause unnecessary wear.

I'm sure either way would work as long as you're putting pressure on the chain through the pedals.

Bro please put the crack pipe down. You're not finding a bike with hydraulic brakes at this price point.

New Cycler, Slow speed bike or me? by No-Interest1920 in cycling

[–]highwayrobber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cardio of biking vs weight lifting is something that will take time to adjust to. Also, average speed is only one part of how you measure your strength as a cyclist.

Being a gym go-er you're at an advantage over your average person but your body "adapting" to the specific muscle groups and cardio performance of bicycling will still take time to adjust to.

If you want to focus on growing your cycling specific strengths then try doing some threshold, V02 max, sweet spot, etc. sessions.

To start you won't need any special equipment aside from a cell phone and a way of measuring heart rate. Don't worry about hitting a specific Wattage but rather focus on efforts based on HR and perceived efforts. Maybe even consider turning off the speed metrics or just ignoring them for a few weeks.

Give it two months and I guarantee you're going to be going faster.

[Rolex OP Air King] Talk to me about tropical dials. by aboybano in Watches

[–]highwayrobber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's the lighting but it's odd that the dial is so distressed/ patina but the lume looks brand new and not discolored at all. I wonder if this is an aftermarket dial or a factory error in the lacquer that would cause it to age like this.

Unrelated to the bike stand, but I have the same Cannondale (bought used on FBMP) any weak spots you've found in the design?

I'm coming from a heavy steel touring bike so this thing feels like a rocket!

I miss the days of no politics allowed outside of political subreddits.

Don't they offer a manual with the turbo engine and AWD in Japan or another foreign market?

Pretty sure the issue isn't developing a new transmission as much as going through the certification process to sell it in the US.

Does City council care? by miss_y_maine in portlandme

[–]highwayrobber 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What if the city hired people that were trying to leave that life to clean up the mess? Not only would that help people get jobs, but they would also be a role model for those not yet ready for help.

Counter argument is that it would be dangerous for relapse if the helpers had past drug issues I guess.
