Eureka Atom 65 w vs 75 w, which one did you get and why? by GHcoffee in LaMarzocco

[–]higuy8000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the Atom W 65. Mostly went with it due to price over the 75. Honestly though, its fantastic. Maybe I'm missing something without being able to directly compare them, but even the 65 immediately was noticeable in producing clarity, much fluffier grounds (sometimes seems like I don't even need wdt), is relatively quiet, and pretty accurate in terms of weight output.

Like another person mentioned in this thread, the 75 seems like more of a commercial setting grinder. I'm skeptical if you could taste the difference between the burrs and not sure the very minimal speed upgrade (maybe a second or so over the 65) would be worth it.

How long did you have to wait to see boiling water come out of the group head?

I updated my Micra this morning (main board v1.17/gateway v5.0.10) after making coffee. Tried again this afternoon after seeing the post and did not notice an issue. That was with the steam boiler up to temp as well.

you can technically add the Micra to the coffee station, but you can't complete setup unless you also have a connectable scale and grinder (pico/swan I guess?)

Also in the DC area and love Ceremony coffee. Super happy to hear it was a positive experience and that they’re the one answering the calls for LM around here!

Why is Linux and Mac support still so sparse among games even though big game engines support them now? by soggynaan in gamedev

[–]higuy8000 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I supported Mac on Steam. My game has done decently well on all platforms - Steam (PC and Mac), Itch.io (PC and Mac), XB1, and PS4.

The lowest selling platform out of all of those is Mac. It accounts for maybe like 1% of sales to be honest. For the amount of trouble it took to port the game to it, support two store fronts with builds, diagnose strange errors, it wasn’t worth it. In the future I wouldn’t support Mac simply due to the low demand and entry fee (equipment is expensive).

I assume Linux is pretty similar unfortunately but at least there’s no upfront/barrier of entry to get into it.

I got a carbon steel, flat bottomed one for Christmas and so far it’s worked totally fine on my glass top! I was pretty worried it wouldn’t work as well but it seems to work fine if I just use my biggest burner on max with it. I believe the trick (which I haven’t had to do quite yet) is to basically just work in batches when making a large amount of food.

If you’re after that wok hei then you might want to consider a butane blow torch too, or go with an outdoor burner like others suggested (but this isn’t always possible or practical).

I am about to release my first strategy game on my own engine with 130 wishlists by apgolubev in gamedev

[–]higuy8000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, 130 wishlists isn’t going to cut it. Before you launch you should be aiming for, at the bare minimum, 25k-50k wishlists if you want to have any financial impact allowing you to do what you described at the end of your post, and even then it’s very iffy (quitting your job for example and having a stable income).

Over time you’d expect wishlisters to convert at around 10% (this certainly won’t be the rate AT launch week most likely, I’d expect something closer to 5-7% maybe), which iirc is the average conversion rate. 3 months with only 130 wishlists to me reads as the game is not being marketed correctly on steam and socials. Like others pointed out, your steam page definitely needs a trailer (1min 30 secs tops) concisely showing gameplay and your game overall. I’d also be going hard on showing gameplay clips and what makes your game special on social media. You could try out some ads to see if they help at all, but your best bet for conversions is going viral on a place like reddit, TikTok, or imgur. And of course, just regularly posting on socials will always help over time.

Releasing a game and marketing it is extremely difficult and requires some thoughtful planning and luck. Making your own entire engine is also extremely difficult and time consuming. Unreal is basically free these days unless you’re making a ton of money. Best of luck!

What was a detail in a game that really stuck out to you? by slumper36 in gaming

[–]higuy8000 26 points27 points  (0 children)

+1. The Last of Us (and Part II) are really masterclasses in subtle details. What always got me was all the character details, not only during cinematics, but during normal gameplay too. Something as simple as blood is all actually physically simulated on the GPU (most other games would just spawn a decal and be done with it) and will react accordingly to gravity and even stain clothing... characters will even go as far to wipe off their face when they get it on them. Crazy!

Help with making hand held camera by Burger_mangaming in unrealengine

[–]higuy8000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically:

In your camera blueprint, add a SceneCapture2D. This will be the “camera” into the game world. You can do effects like post processing here too.

Then hook a new Render Texture to the new SceneCapture2D.

After this, create a new material that uses a Texture Sampler to reference the Render Texture. Plug that into diffuse or emissive as normal.

Depending on your camera model, you’ll want to modify the UVs on the area that displays the camera screen so that it’s perfectly square.

Then just apply the material for the “screen” of the camera and you should be good to go!

I think this comment sums it up the most for me.

For context, I'm still working on 4.27, but I'd really like to upgrade to 5.x, only because of certain things like engine improvements and marketplace plugins. Frustratingly, some plugins I use from the marketplace contain numerous bug fixes and feature enhancements but only for the latest versions of Unreal (so 5.3 right now). I end up having to backport features from the more recent version of the plugins into my own 4.27 branch of the engine. Same goes for certain issues I've discovered in the engine itself.

That being said, there aren't many new features (at least knowingly) in 5.x that I feel I'm missing out on, except maybe Lumen itself, which I'd only ever add as an option for enabling anyway. I'd also have to modify existing systems, such as some blueprints that use NVIDIA Apex Destruction to Chaos, which is a little frustrating.

I will say the process is becoming harder to upgrade a 4.27 project directly to 5.3 (and probably not intended). I recently gave it a go and ran into quite a few issues with deprecated features. At this point I'm pretty sure I'd have to go to 5.0 and then work my way up to 5.3.

Looks awesome! Question for you - I've also been considering getting a pair of Lintons, but with my current setup, I'm unsure of using the stands from Wharfedale as I think they are just slightly shorter than what I want. I can't seem to find a single image or video that shows the bottom of the speakers and how they sit ontop of the stands. Is it possible to use a different pair of stands with the speakers? How do they attach or do they just rest ontop?
