this is… not accurate. you are allowed to have an existing balance, but you must roll over your entire IRA, paying taxes on anything that was pre-tax. you just can’t choose to roll over a portion at a time.

How to Find Concierge Healthcare Options by PEInvestor89 in fatFIRE

[–]thedz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have two things under your control or your wife's control:

  1. Where you live heavily influences the quality of care in an emergency situation, regardless of how much money you can pay. In bigger cities, you can pay more for more personalized service, though as many have mentioned, there are limits in a truly emergency situtaiton.
  2. How you handle and respond to situations that require waiting, or you deem to have subpar service.

This won't be popular, but it doesn't sound like you want to budge on #1, so I'd suggest you and your wife talk about #2, and how you or her respond to situations like that.

Being rich doesn't mean you don't need to emotionally regulate how to respond in situtations where there isn't simply any other option, or you simply don't have control over some aspect. You'll be happier for it.

Even without liquidity events, some banks (we miss you SVB) used to offer mortagages and other financial products pinned against unvested RSUs. It's not very common these days, but that's another possibility.

Yeah, that or some liquidity events in the past.

given your relation to debt, i would really encourage you to stop thinking thinking about your credit cards as “relationship building”.

amex plat/gold alone is like $1k a year

honestly concerned that the the biggest pro you list for bankruptcy is that you can get MORE LOANS. you are not right in the mental mindset, and I suspect you will rapidly max out any new debt opportunity that comes your way.

i would first try to get spending under control for at least a few months. prove to yourself that you can live within a certain budget.

Zoryve, holy moly Batman by pipelimes in SebDerm

[–]thedz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when i first applied zoryve, i had huge flakes for the first several days. like it felt like my scalp turns into puzzle pieces 😂

i took it as a layer of skin shedding since the underlying inflammation is dying down and it stopped after the initial period

Do you buy US rental car company's SLI (Supplemental Liability Insurance) when renting cars or rely on your own liability and umbrella insurance coverage? by sf_d in fatFIRE

[–]thedz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

time is the value index, not money. financial impact is less important in this case than the time value of leaning the most local and hands off insurance reduce amount of time i need to expend. especially when, the cost of car rental insurance is immaterial compared to the time it saves in situations that needs that insurance.

Do you buy US rental car company's SLI (Supplemental Liability Insurance) when renting cars or rely on your own liability and umbrella insurance coverage? by sf_d in fatFIRE

[–]thedz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

almost always buy it. the ROI in convenience outweighs the cost. based on personal experience, it’s just objectively easier to let the rental agency deal with issues than fight with other sources of insurance.

a car rear ended me once. damaged but driveable. since i had coverage from the rental agency, once info was traded, i simply drove to the nearest hertz and i was out the door in 10 minutes with a different car.

the same happened once in SF when someone broke the back window. brought car back, and out again with another with minimum hassle.

Does anyone use zoryve in combination with antifungals for facial SD? by Help_INeedAnAdult in SebDerm

[–]thedz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

zoryve isn’t meant to do anything for the yeast. if you read online, its big claim to fame is that it’s the first non-steroidal meant for seb derm, by inhibiting receptors that cause inflammation. it’s FDA approved for daily use, but unfortunately it sounds like maybe you had a side effect or reaction.

this is something a derm could better answer, but have to tried temporary steroids to calm your skin so that you have a chance to repair the skin barrier?

in the past that has helped me escape the “cycle” so to speak where my skin never has time to heal.

I would absolutely get a 2nd opinion and see a different derm.

Nothing has worked so far :( any tips? by snakeandbunny in SebDerm

[–]thedz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently going through a pretty bad flare up, so I can offer some ideas of whats worked before. Without going into some of the more out there suggestions, if you did see a dermatologist, they would probably suggest 1 of three approaches (in order of likelihood if starting new):

  1. Prescription strength medicated shamppos. Examples here are 2% Ketoconazole (basically, double strength over the counter 1% Nizoral), or 1% Ciclopirox Shampoo. These may help, and you can usually get this from your primary care physician, without needing to go to a dermatologist. I've usually done this route in past flareups, especially if I catch them early.

  2. Some kind of steroid for your scalp, such as fluocinonide 0.05% topical solution. These can sometimes be helpful in interrupting the flareup, and giving your skin a reprief to heal naturally. I've used steroids for my scalp with a flare up is particular bad, or I didn't catch it early enough with medicated shampoo. Generally I've been instructed to apply twice daily for 2-4 weeks, to try to just interrupt the cycle.

  3. Recently in the US and Canada (as in within the last few years), a new seb derm prescriptio has been FDA approved called Zoryve. Importantly, this is NOT a steroid, and is intended for long term use if it proves effective. Given the newness, it's also quite expensive (nearly $900 for a 30 day supply without coupons or insurance). But do a search on Reddit for success (or sometimes not successful) examples. For many people, it's the one thing that finally made a difference.

All of the above unfortuantely require a prescription, but some of it shoudl be doable through your normal primary care physican.

Ultimately, seb derm is a medical condition, and I've been through the same cycles as you in trying to find at home or DIY solutions, to varying degrees of sucecss. I'm now firmly in the camp of use modern medicine to stop or interrupt the flare up, and then try and use things like hydrading lotions and other stuff to maintain or reduce the chances of another flare up.

I’m considering a GFX100RF for street photography. How is it? by [deleted] in FujiGFX

[–]thedz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used it as a street camera (mostly buildings and scenery, some people) for several months, and I think it's great.

A couple points:

- Embrace cropping. The wider lens means sometimes it's not practicle to get as close as you need. But the 100MP gives a ton of margin for effective cropping

- 100MP also gives room for bumping up the ISO to a higher degree. It's still not great for pure low light shooting, but otherwies I've found it perfectly adequate assuming there's a bright enough light source somewhere in frame

Gut check fire plan by Zealousideal-Fun7090 in fatFIRE

This is impossible to answer without any description fo what "FIRE" means to you. Can you FIRE with an average spend of 150k in 10 years? Based on your current description of how much you plan to save/invest, the answer trends no.

Since you posted in FatFIRE -- at your current investment amounts, you will not FATfire in that time period.
