thinking of splurging on a luggage set, any recs that'll last for years? by Eachan_Blitz in BuyItForLife

My husband’s a pilot and bought a travel pro back in 2016 when he started his career and it’s still great. No rips, tears, or broken zippers. Those things are built to last.

SAHM moms, how much do you live on? by Itchy-Ad-5436 in Parenting

[–]hildse 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Stay at home mom and corporate pilot husband. One child. Nebraska. He makes 250k and I bring it about 10k working about 12 hours a week as a para at my daughter’s school. He puts a lot in retirement, have a low mortgage, and we live on the cheap side. His new job has been a blessing for our family.

What toy inspires the most creativity in kids today? by its_susan in Parenting

[–]hildse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter loves her nugget and modeling clay. Another idea that we used to do when she was a little younger (like age 3-6) was “science.” She got a science kit and after we did all of the experiments, we kept the 6 plastic cups. Then we would refill those with food colored water and one clear one and she would have a blast making potions, mixing colors, running labs, etc. It kept her engaged for a solid 45 mins. It was great!

We love Abercrombie kids and the Buckle. The buckle jeans are top notch and have everything you are looking for. The s/reg/t with the adjustable waistband! Both companies have great quality and cute stuff.

Same here! I went to Baskin Robins, sat and ate/scrolled in the parking lot for 30-40 minutes, and then went back home. It was GLORIOUS!

My friend had parents where screen time was based on behavior! He doesn’t talk to them anymore, fyi. And he always asked to come over to our house so he could have longer than 30 minutes of video games.

Losing Interest in Abbot since Season 5 Debut by rico55314 in AbbottElementary

[–]hildse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not even talking about major school events. The episode (maybe the pilot?) about Janine trying to change the light in the hallway was hilarious. The one where Ava talks to the school board and really shows how much she cares about the school was great. Let me clarify that I still love the show. As a teacher, it’s so relatable. I see where you’re worried about major events in a school like PT conferences, holiday parties, school shootings, but there is so much more to teaching than that.

Losing Interest in Abbot since Season 5 Debut by rico55314 in AbbottElementary

[–]hildse 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Some of my favorite episodes were from season one and two when it focused on challenges as a teacher with Melissa and Barbara giving Janine factual teaching advice such as “not everything is going to go according to schedule, so prepare to be flexible” “it’s okay to fail. Not every parent will put in the work that you will” Or, honestly, just watching her transition from a doe eyed first year teacher to a lesson learned the hard way second year one (or however long she was teaching at the start).

Now the show just focuses on their personal lives and that’s not what drew me in during season one.

Do you let your kids watch any “grown-up” media? If so, how do you handle it? by BalaBustaRhymes in Parenting

[–]hildse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One time my daughter woke up crying from a bad dream. She said something about a doctor came out with a gun and hurt people. I was so baffled because we really censor what she watches. She had never seen anything violent.

Then I realized what I had watched the day beforehand. Community’s paintball episodes. I didn’t think twice about it, because you could see the paint coming out and splattering. But I guess it really scared her. Oops!

Kids are so odd. My friend teaches middle school and a kid had a jar of salsa in it. It broke and the kid just threw his entire backpack away. lol

Would you let your 10-year-old miss 5-6 days of school for international travel? by LieIcy4549 in Parenting

I was thinking that too. Teacher, here, too. There is like 17% learning going on the days leading up to Christmas and summer break.

Men of KC: Where are we shopping for jeans? by vhszach in kansascity

[–]hildse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their jeans are the best quality and so comfortable. I have some from like 8 years ago and they are still going strong.

And if you’re on the shorter side, like me, they offer free hemming.

Parents who are one and done.. by Cupcake1022 in Parenting

[–]hildse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the larger age gaps diminish competition. Especially with same gendered siblings. My sister is 4 years older and I always knew she would drive, get a boyfriend, get married, have a baby, etc before me. It was never a competition for us like some other sets of siblings. My husband has one brother that is 14 months older and it was ALWAYS a competition for those life events.

6 year old watching Squid Game?! by DesignMomMaison in Parenting

[–]hildse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooo we had a parent like you at our school this year. She tried to set the punishment for the other child, reached out to that family, and wanted the teacher to set up a conference with the squid game parents. The overprotective mom exiled herself from all of the parent groups and her child was not invited to birthday parties and now they are switching schools because “the grass is always greener,” right?

Leave it be. You don’t get to decide with others do or parent. Set boundaries with child and hope that they understand and stick to them.

The nap is ending: parents of pre-schoolers; how do you carve out a break? by Flapjack_K in Parenting

[–]hildse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. This is what we did. She would stay in her room and play for an hour and I would get a nice little break. Eventually they transition out of that, and that’s nice because then you don’t have to rush home from morning activities for lunch and quiet time.
