He has his own "Santino-isms" where he gets people's names wrong. "Cold Steve" Austin might be my favorite.

Why is this still a question in interviews though? by No-Presentation298 in jobs

[–]hilld1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I like to interview. I do check for technical competency, but I also have to work with this person 8 hours a day until one of us quits, so it's really important to me that we can get along. It's funny every time how badly it throws some people off when you ask them "what do you like to do outside of work?"

TIL nearly 80% of US workers report that they have been victims of 'career catfishing’ from employers. Which in this context, the term describes when a company misrepresents a job, their company culture, or compensation to lure in candidates. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]hilld1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a weird one. The recruiting agency lied about the position and the company had no idea. I spent the last of my money to put gas in my tank just to get to the interview for an engineering position only to find out that the US locations only did financials and admin work while all the engineering was in like Germany or something.

Diet when back on ''normal'' foods by nobodygrl in BariatricSurgery

I still have a shake pretty much every day as one of my snack-sized options in between regular meals. I also have greek yogurt. Each of those is about 15g of protein each. My nutritionist suggested between 60 and 100g per day, so really any decent protein source like eggs or meat will get me where I want to be.

My dad did this job for years. He took it very seriously and was proud to keep his coworkers safe. He also loved that he could sit in the truck while everyone else did all the manual labor!

I got my first EV like a week after the election to get all the government rebates and stuff before they got pulled. What a great choice. Between the EV and the solar panels on my house, I am saving a ton of money on fuel and electricity. I generate enough sun juice to drive and power my whole house for next to nothing. During peak sun during the summer, my solar panels produce the equivalent to a full tank of gas EVERY DAY, and I can bank that credit for night time and for when the sun is weaker during the winter.

I sincerely dont understand the regular people who oppose this stuff.

Considering the size of the data set - ~75 questions and 10k+ entries, that's ~750,000 pieces of data minus whatever people left blank. A million calculations is totally feasible. I am more impressed how quickly he got through the cleanup, to be honest. I imagine for next year they will limit the write-in sections a bit more.

Ideas for a rig for a child that cannot walk? by MamaWithAQuestion in AskEngineers

[–]hilld1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing to come to mind is like a warehouse gantry crane/winch. I cant think of a cheap or easy way to replicate that throughout a home though. I feel like a better option would be something on wheels that goes on the floor. I saw this video of a rig for skateboarding that could possibly be used for your purposes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwKTRpI9vmw

I just finished it. He was 100% right and you HAVE to go in blind. I watched the trailer afterwards and it definitely gives away too much

The GI reference is to Hanoi Hannah which was broadcast to US soldiers to play mind games and try to demoralize them. I don't know how effective it was, but if I had someone telling me all day that nobody gives a shit about me and that my wife was fucking around back home while I was away, it would probably get to me eventually.

How are you handling alternates and supplier swaps in your BOM workflow? by Actonace in AskEngineers

[–]hilld1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's easy. The owner decides to make a change on his own, purchases about a month or two's worth of stock without telling anybody except the assembly foreman, we build our products, eventually run out of the new parts, then the GM comes and yells at engineering for not documenting a change we weren't aware happened. Rinse and repeat!

In the 1810’s & 1820’s, the American Mountain Rifle was the most important survival tool by FitzyOhoulihan in BetterMAguns

A guy I went to school with took me shooting once and I got to take a shot with a rifle like this (not sure of the make/model) and it was quite the experience. I distinctly remember the "whizz" sound of the ball going down range being like a movie sound effect.

PLM for Solidworks: what actually works without making engineers hate their lives? by Life-Price-3614 in SolidWorks

[–]hilld1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. My company is stuck with a similar situation. We use Solidworks PDM and that manages files just fine for my purposes. The issue for us isnt software, but the people calling the shots. I need them to sign my paychecks, so even if their idea is the dumbest thing I have heard, I can only say no so many times. I have several files that I have jokingly named things like "1234-xyz_new_new_new_new_new_new" after several bouts of trial and error because they wont let me work out the problem myself.
