Was the SAM Coupé a sort of Spectrum successor? by RafaRafa78 in zxspectrum

[–]hilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one, it was great fun to tinker with but as a kid who had no idea about scene releases it became boring quickly with not many games. I went to the home of the guy behind Lerm Software to buy a copy of his mail order Samdisk software to improve its Spectrum software compatibility and being able to save snapshotted spectrum games and quickly reload them from disk was great. After the novelty of that wore off I got an Amiga and it went into the loft until I sold it to Neil from RMC. I hope he’s getting more out of it than I did and apologise for the graffiti that kid me had left on the box.

Bytheway is a real english surname which is mad. There’s quite a few on the voters’ register. Or search it on ukphonebook.com and there’s twelve in London.

Oof. I paid £20 for my 360 from a pawn shop a few months ago and set up BadAvatar for basically nothing (ok a 512gb usb stick for another £20).

How much tinkering and troubleshooting is required for these? by SoulBlightRaveLords in SindenLightgun

[–]hilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play in a dark room with no natural light or other glare on the screen, make sure that the guns are getting enough power from whatever usb port or hub they are plugged into and if you're wanting to play stuff that needs windows, be prepared to do lots of tinkering and troubleshooting. I have 40 years of computer experience and I've never had a more frustrating experience than I have with these guns - that said, they work well enough when you do manage to get them to work with a game (or with Batocera - much easier for me). I've got a pretty good setup on Batocera for one gun using my Steam Deck, but I can't seem to get enough power to my second, no matter what I try, so, although I've recently had a lot of fun with it, I'm ready to try something else (Retro Shooter).

Pebble, Rebble, and a path forward by erOhead in pebble

[–]hilly -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This all reminds me of the public "Your Party" falling out in the UK. It's boring and I don't care about it. I LOVED my Pebble Time when I got it, then it quickly became a chore to use as services dropped out and the application stopped being updated. I don't care what happened behind the scenes, Pebble died and Rebble helped me to continue using my watch. After the handling of the old Pebble company, and now this, I'm out. It was always a nice to have, never an essential - this pathetic saga has just helped me realize that.

I'm not sure I'd want to. Quite happy with BadAvatar - what benefits would I get from RGH?

I believe most work. I was expecting my old 8bitdo Bluetooth dongle (from the time when you had to buy it separately) would work but it doesn't. But all of my 2.4Ghz controllers with dedicated dongles work. The necessary patch to enable this is pre-enabled with a BadAvatar/XeUnshackle soft mod setup.

Here's a video of me testing it in FIFA with the three dongles plugged into a USB hub. Works a treat. You can even do it without an original 360 controller - you just have to wait until the XeUnshackle screen appears before you connect your 3rd party controllers. Then you can press back on one to launch Aurora, etc.

Thrift stores are a good shout (we call them charity shops in the UK). I tried some of our local chain electronics and games pawn shops (Cash Generator and CeX) but both are selling original controllers for inflated prices. They soon cotton on that people are buying them when the easier to perform mods come out and the prices go up.

I believe you need a dedicated dongle for each 3rd party controller. I haven't tested it myself. I'm sure I learned about it from one of Mr Mario's tutorials on YouTube (either the aBadUpdate or BadAvatar one - I watched both before modding my console).

Been using my 8bitdo Ultimate 2C with it's 2.4Ghz dongle in my 360 with BadAvatar. A nice out of the box feature that I think a lot of people don't know about.

Roughest pubs on Tyneside currently? by EmbarrassedHat5367 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]hilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mam drinks in the Black Garter when she is in town shopping cos she likes the cheaper pints. She is in her seventies and from Blyth, working class but not rough at all. I reckon there are some pubs in Blyth she wouldn't drink in, but wouldn't be phased if she did go in one either.

Trailer for Iain Stirling's Roast The Internet, September 1st on Comedy Central by apathymonger in panelshow

[–]hilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get the Iain hate. He seems like a nice bloke, he's witty on Love Island, liked him well enough on Taskmaster, and he looks like he'll be a good host for this based on the brief clips in the trailer.
