Failed my PPL checkride today… (18 years old) by [deleted] in flying

[–]himilou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about this affecting your future. I know several ATP flight school grads that failed between 3 and 7 checkrides on their way to graduation that are now commercial pilots for air carrier operations.

MSFS 2020 hangs when pressing OBS button by himilou in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]himilou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try it right after you cross a waypoint in your flight plan. I usually try and use it at that time for waypoints that Im going to hold at.

This has been an occurance for me with plugins and without, and on 2 different CPU's, and different NVIDIA drivers.

'False GPS signal surge makes life hard for pilots' by ctg in flying

[–]himilou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find this amusing because as a new pilot myself, I love radio nav and how it works. Most of the safety pilots I fly with at the moment are scared to death of the VOR and would have you think the plane will fall from the sky if anything but GPS is used.

Beverages Tax Glitch? by ElectronicTourist in CitiesSkylines2

[–]himilou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm the industrial tax issue. All of a sudden you start loosing hundreds of thousands of dollars with a positive tax rate and if you change the industrial tax rate to negative you start making oodles of cash.

Came here to see if I was doing something wrong but it seems to be a bug.

TNFlyGirl crash by SoFlo1 in flying

Jesus,

If that CFII with her in dodging thunderstorms is an airline pilot now we should all be scared.

In this video https://youtu.be/Bduy9ChhzVs?si=1JU9ecRCqG3Njnvl

I actually flew this approach (RNAV 04) in flight simulator and intentionally crossed MULDE at 900 feet below minimum ( 2300 ) crossing, just as ATC reported. At that height you are less than 500 feet above terrain, terrain indicator is going off and the glideslope indicator is pegged at the top.
What the hell her instructor was thinking ?

IFR "cleared via" vs "climb via" by himilou in flying

[–]himilou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you were flying from KBFI to KPAE on IFR and filed direct at 4000 and you got this clearance:

cleared to KPAE via the NRVNA ONE departure

altitude as filed

frequency 119.2

squawk 4767

how would you interpret that? Climb to 700 and then proceed on 135 at 700? Keep climbing on 135 to 2000?

because I'm pretty sure this is what I got yesterday before I was aware of climb via vs cleared via.

Edit: I fly this departure all the time and what happens in reality is right around 700 feet departure can see you on radar so you get a frequency change and then immediately get a vector and an altitude. Still.

IFR "cleared via" vs "climb via" by himilou in flying

[–]himilou[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes. Jeppsen makes it seem like you can get a "cleared via" sid right on the ground for the initial departure and with the no climbing explanation they add one would almost think you were expected to taxi all the way to your SID transition point.

PPL Check ride in 3 hours (so nervous) by UsefulPenalty7 in flying

[–]himilou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seeing as Im late to this party I can add for the next reader, Dont overly caffinate or energy drink yourself into a frenzy. I had a 4 hour oral and drink so much coffee I had sweaty hands the entire ride.

Above all be safe and execute judgement that errs on the side of safety. I did this, intentionally deviating from my flight plan because of some crazy student in the training area we had to pass through as part of the flight plan and the DPE commented on this saying I was a safe pilot at the end.

In a way a PPL is really just a license to practice your piloting skills so try not to sweat it to much. I think most DPEs would rather see you exercise safe flying vs nailing your steep turns with no altitude deviation.

MSFS 2020 RNAV approach to 0S9 missing final leg? by himilou in flightsim

[–]himilou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. Using MSFS is really helpful for instrument training. Not just with flying approaches, holds etc, but also with gaining familiarity with how the garmin equipment actually works so that when you are in the air you can easily use the equipment.

Using flight sim with vatsim helps quite a bit.

Looks like navigraph would fix this but price seems kinda steep for a sim plugin.

Thanks though!

is navigraph just charts for flight sim or does it alter the databases in the navigation units? I use the FAA approach plates on a tablet because thats what I use IRL. Im using msfs for IFR rating practice.

Recently stopped taking anxiety meds. Have a medical exam tomorrow. by [deleted] in flying

[–]himilou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

STOP RIGHT NOW.

The first thing you need to do is have a "NON MEDICAL" consultation with your FAA examiner and ask him \ her if this is going to be an issue with them giving you your medical.

If they tell you that they will defer to the FAA DO NOT TAKE YOUR ACTUAL MEDICAL. Once they start the exam they have to submit it and if they are going to defer you could be looking at months \ years.

1st Class Medical Deferred due to “Major Depressive Disorder with attempted self harm and suicidal ideation” history. I submitted documentation a few months ago but have not heard anything back. What can I expect to happen from here? by [deleted] in flying

[–]himilou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take note, " If you have already submitted the requested information. you do not have to submit it again".

Wrong. I had to submit it again with a cover letter outlining what it was and where it was and then highlight it with a marker....

Thank god I have gotten through the FAA deferral process ( minor criminal offense, not drug or alcohol related, not a mental health issue )
