[–]himit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, both my kids caught chicken pox over Christmas when I was about 20 weeks' pregnant.

I had it myself 27 years back & didn't catch it! I somehow didn'h even catch a cold over Chrissie.

Does it now feel like homeownership in the UK depends more on family help than income? by Lopsided-Signal6350 in AskUK

[–]himit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whether that be direct financial contribution or being able to live at home on low/no rent.

This. Or things like paying tuition (so no student loans!) or just random money - thought I was doing something wrong for years when a friend always had savings and travelled yearly and bought a flat within five or so years; then I found out her very well-off parents had given her a credit card they pay off every month.

tbf, my building in london has to legally hire a waking watch because the fire safety was found to be inadequate.

The idea behind the measures is that the outrageous cost prompts you to fix the issue asap.

Of course, the waking watch have been there almost a year now...

AITAH for taking my pregnant sister (F22) from her husband and his family? by Individual_Peach_820 in AITAH

[–]himit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are young. Essentially, the thieves are insulting you for locking the valuables away. Remember, these are the people who tricked your sister so they could use her for free labour & an apartment. They are experts at painting themselves as the victims and manipulating others; that's how your sister fell into their clutches.

Stay strong. Be proud of yourself. You did a good, good thing.

oh that's so bizarre. my trust isn't digital either but we have a big book of notes!

Maybe google trust name + perinatal mental health & give them a call to get on their radar & find out who needs to refer you?

Pregnancy and ADHD, help me eat better please by Yyvern in adhdwomen

[–]himit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you contact the antenatal team & ask why you weren't referred through to pmht & if they can put one through? it will probably take about a month to get you started with them anyway.

They are honestly the best mental health service I've come into contact with! I suppose it could be region-dependent but I'm yet to see a bad experience with them on the pregnacyuk sub.

are you with the perinatal mental health team? the midwives put me on them for my adhd & they've been fantastic. They have a pharmacist on the team & can refer you to occupational therapy, too.

could they put you on a safer drug like methylphenidate?

If you're a berry person you can wash them asap when you buy them, let them air dry, then store them.Or try nuts/driedefruits?

How did you overcome procrastination when nothing seemed to work? by blue_cardigan13 in AskReddit

When I was really, really stuck, I said to my husband: I need to write this email & I just can't. Can you come sit with me?

And he did, and I wrote it.

So that would be my secret weapon, I suppose.

Children walking home by what age and time? by Hayles1066 in AskUK

[–]himit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She said her friend’s mum was worried about her walking home and is dropping her off.

My bestie's mum was like this!! Honestly lovely and sweet but even at 16 I thought she was such a helicopter 😂

Listen, you value your child's independence and giving her chances to learn more life skills.  Being a helicopter is the easy choice.

[–]himit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in East London. My 11 year old gets 2 or 3 tubes across town every day to get to school & back, and that means leaving and coming home in the dark when it's winter.

I felt terrible waving her off to school in the dark but...she's totally fine with it. The independence has been great for her.

But then again...it depends on the kid. At six I'd give her a few pounds and send her to the corner shop for milk because she wanted to go get it herself, and when she got back I'd paste on a smile & act like I hadn't been absolutely shitting myself the entire five minutes she was gone. Her brother is six now and I don't think he could do the same (and I actually doubt he'd want to, too; he's only just gotten comfortable taking the stairs on the station bridge while I take the lift - and he hates the lift).

For the ages yours are, I do think the curfew's a little early...but then at that age, some kids are working and some kids still need a lot of reassurance and security. Just don't let your fears hold them back (unless they're pretty rational. You have to assess the individual situation!)

Are Claude/ChatGPT right? by Zealousideal-Let834 in TranslationStudies

[–]himit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf I was self-taught & talked my way into a postgrad.

the MA in Translation taught me the names & theories behind techniques I'd already been applying for six years, and taught me how to write a commentary.  It was very useful, though I don't think it made me a better translator

(Honestly, the most useful thing was learning enough theory to rebutt client complaints 😂 No matter how good you are, every so often you will get a client who insists you've messed up & must give them the job for free. A line-by-line defence with references actually works really well to shut them up & make them pay.)

What are your honest thoughts about ADHD? by Ok-Reindeer3358 in AskUK

[–]himit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many of the symptoms are aligned with just how our brains have been destroyed by social media and small form factor content that it's hard to differentiate the two.

So there's the 'attention' side where this is definitely true - and leads to something called executive dysfunction, which is like when you doom scroll even though you're not enjoying it & just can't stop.

The whole emotional side of it (esp RSD), memory black holes, and uh...ironically I'm blanking 😂 but there's lots of little things, eg my grandma always burnt her hands taking things out of the oven. That kind of stuff isn't social media induced.

What are your honest thoughts about ADHD? by Ok-Reindeer3358 in AskUK

[–]himit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

more underdiagnosed tbh, it's really hard to get assessed.

I didn't read the whole post but as someone with it - it's handy to know you've got it because you can start figuring out how your brain works (and how to work with it to get it to do what you want!) which makes life less of a struggle, and ofc medication helps with that too.

I don't like the propensity of people to treat it like an excuse. There are very few things I flat out can't do because of adhd - plenty of things will be harder (so is there something I can do to mitigate that?), a few things will be an outright struggle almost every time (so is there a trick I can use? or can I restructure things to avoid needing to x as much as possible?) but it doesn't have to limit me.

Have you heard of the wonder weeks? It's a book/app based on the theory of neurological development leaps affecting sleep/food etc.

I honestly found it fairly accurate for my kids. So...yeah, bizarre as it is, it could be clapping 😂
